The Nocturne is an expedition into almost forgotten memories with overtones of hope as well as resignation and melancholia. It has been described as the feeling one has on a cold winters’ day when the sun almost shines for a brief moment, then is gone forever into the frozen darkness of night, never to return. Originally written with orchestral accompaniment as the second movement of the Piano Concerto #2 in C minor, this arrangement for solo piano was made at the request of Joanna Ezrin, pianist and pedagogue, and has been recognized at the MTAC annual convention in 2007.

Inasmuch as his early works are well-known and relatively easy to perform, Faure’s music seems to have become gradually more difficult during his later life. In other words, his later works are somewhat esoteric and complex. Early Home Life: Fauré was in fact born into a well-cultivated family. His aptitude for music became particularly clear early on - when he was still a boy. Under these circumstances, his parents sent him to a music institution in Paris. Consequently, the training he received there prepared him for a career as a church organist and choirmaster. Middle Life: It is important to realize that Fauré studied music composition with the French musical mastermind Camille Saint-Saëns, who became his lifelong friend. Fauré eventually graduated from college and earned a living as an organist and educator. During this period, he had, on the whole, little time to compose. He consequently became more successful in his middle age, becoming organist of the Église de la Madeleine and director of the Paris Conservatoire. However, he still needed time on balance for composing. Therefore, given these points, he withdrew to the countryside during the summer to focus on composing. Later Life: Fauré was, in the final analysis, recognized in France as the foremost French composer of his time. The French government held a national musical tribute particularly for him in Paris. The French President notably headed the ceremony. Elsewhere, on the contrary, Fauré's music was slow to become accepted, except of course, in England. Legacy: Historians often describe Fauré's music in general as a transition between the end of Romanticism and the beginning of modernism. As an illustration, when Fauré was born, Chopin was still composing. However, by the time of Fauré's death, jazz and atonal music, in particular, had come to fruition. Fauré, by all means, suffered from increasing deafness in his later years. Some musicologists believe this to be indeed the cause of the esoteric nature of Faure’s final works.

The Irish composer John Field first used the term in the early 19th century to describe a type of character piece for piano intended to be played in the evening or at night. The term was later adopted by other composers, including Chopin and Fauré, who used it to describe their compositions. In the case of Fauré's Nocturne Op. 104, the title nocturne refers to the fact that it is a piece of music intended to be played at night or evocative of the night. The piece is characterized by its modal, incantatory theme, which seems to hark back to the plainchant that Fauré studied at the Niedermeyer School. Like other nocturnes in the set, it explores one predominant mood.Fauré's Nocturne Op. 104 and Chopin's nocturnes share some similarities, but they also have some differences. Fauré greatly admired the music of Chopin and was happy to compose in forms and patterns established by the earlier composer. Fauré's early nocturnes employ the same basic textures as Chopin's nocturnes, but Fauré's later works abandon this in favor of increasingly contrapuntal writing. This 2-hands piano version is fairly difficult and requires large stretches at times, but for those who like a challenge it is well worth it. This 2-hands piano version is fairly difficult and requires large stretches at times, but for those who like a challenge it is well worth it. However, we decided it would be good to provide 4-hands versions as well, which are easier to perform and also available on this site. The original stories behind the movements are: 1. Marie for shame - based on a setting of the poem Marie, vous estes paresseuse - Marie for shame you keep a-bed too long, you must get up and enjoy life. 2. Published by JB Linear (A0.582196). John Field was born in Ireland in 1782. He was a fine pianist and has been known as one of the early originators of the Nocturne. His 18 Nocturnes for piano is composed in such a way as the melody is carried mostly by the right hand while the left hand produces a harmony figure. This makes this Nocturne #18 (Midi - Noontide) a likely one to arrange as a clarinet solo with piano. The piece runs about 5 minutes and has lots of scaler passages, so practice up your Eb, Bb, and B major scales!
