Published by Ivo Antognini (A0.1211209). In this Trinity Service (2021) I used the text of the Magnificat as if it were the storyboard of a film. I tried to describe in the utmost detail the emotion the words conveyed to me and the images they suggested. In this composition I have used word-painting, attempting to colour as many words, phrases and situations as possible; hence the score is full of expression markings such as ‘majestic’, ‘with vigour’, ‘lively’, ‘intense’, ‘with affection’ and ‘with verve’. The result is a piece that changes texture rather quickly, and its noble opening theme (‘My soul doth magnify the Lord’) returns only once in abbreviated form (‘He hath filled the hungry with good things’). The following Nunc dimittis has a much more meditative and intimate character with a sparser texture. There are some references to the themes presented in the Magnificat. A motif from the Magnificat, ‘Glory be to the Father, and to the Son’, recurs in almost the same form towards the close of the Nunc dimittis, but in a quieter vein and in 4 rather than the 43 of the Magnificat. The Magnificat and the Nunc dimittis may be performed individually.

It is the second of Two Canticles from the Christmas Story. The first motet in this set is a setting of the Magnificat (Song of Mary). Using the standard English ICET texts, both motets serve many liturgical functions but of course may be sung at other times as well. If performed in a concert, these motets may be performed individually or as a set since both are in F major. The book, dating from the 7th century, is one of the finest examples of Anglo-Saxon Northumbrian illuminated manuscript, containing the oldest surviving translation of the Gospels into English. The manuscript was produced at a monastery on the island of Lindisfarne but is normally housed at the British Library in London, and its special exhibition in the Palace Green Library at Durham was marked by a summer-long celebration of the arts. Casken's Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis is set in English.

Version for double choir men's voices (ATB-ATB) This setting of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis (called Canticula Ursae Minoris - songs of a little bear) is based on my oratorio in which I set a chapter of Winnie the Pooh (Now we are six - The Expotition to the North Pole). The tunes are and light and playful but the complexity makes it suited to a Cathedral or Church setting. The oratorio itself (The Poohratorio, composed in 1977) has not yet been published here due to copyright on the works of A A Milne, but the melodies are entirely mine. You may be able to guess some of the characters whose leitmotifs in the oratorio are used in this setting. In particular, the lesser doxology (Glory be to the Father) makes great use the theme of Eeyore, the complaining donkey. The sound sample is performed by Matthew Curtis of choraltracks.com.

The 'Magnificat' depicts a sense of exuberance during what have must been at the same time overwhelming and extremely exciting time for the young virgin who had been visited by the Angel Gabriel and informed that she would be the mother of Jesus Christ. The 'Nunc Dimittis' portrays the calm and steady faith of old Simeon and his awe and final fulfillment upon seeing the baby Jesus at the end of a long life of waiting. The 'Gloria Patri' at the end of both sections of this work is grand and lyrical with soaring vocal lines and emotive harmonies.
