O magnum mysterium, originally written for Raffles Chorale and was premiered by just over 20 singers on 19th December 2014. This is the revised edition for sale in SheetMusicPlus. O magnum mysterium begins with an almost chant-like, dark atmosphere with the basses singing below the drones of the choir. The sopranos slowly emerge and the choir bursts into lush harmonies and long undulating melody lines. O magnum mysterium ends with the sopranos proclaiming Alleluia and the rest of the choir echoing. Finally, the basses return with the melody heard right from the beginning, allowing the piece to culminate peacefully and calmly. The duration of O magnum mysterium is approximately 3'40'' long. It is recommended that a sizeable choir of approximately 40 or more singers is needed to perform this work, however, it is adequate to perform this with any other choir size. On one hand the traditional liturgical 'O MAGNUM MYSTERIUM', responsorial chant from the Matins of Christmas which a great number of composers of all times have reworked into a choral setting; and on the other hand some selected verses from Chapter 2 of the Gospel according to Matthew. The liturgical Responsory evokes with awe the presence of animals that should see the newborn Lord, lying in a manger ending with a fervent exclamation to the Virgin whose womb was worthy to bear Christ the Lord, whereas the biblical text describes the scene of the magi who have arrived in Jerusalem from the east to homage the new-born King. Beata Virgo - consists of the second stanza of the text, sung by the soloist (SATB Solo) (02:12).3. Fuga - Alleluia - consists of the final 'Alleluia' exclamation of the text. This part is a fugal composition with a Baroque-like style (SATB) (04:06).This composition reflects the mystery of the Incarnation of the Lord (first movement), the joy of Mother Mary after giving birth to the Lord while remembering the words of St. Elizabeth (second movement), and the exclamation of the faithful singing Alleluia continuously (third movement).This composition is accessible and suitable for student, school, or university choir, especially for Christmas Concert or Christmas Recital. Originally the text for a Gregorian chant, it was later used in polyphonic motets of the 16th century – and many settings have been composed since then. Perhaps the enduring appeal of the poem is based on its simple depiction of Christ’s humanity and humility, together with its expression of devotion to his mother, Mary. In composing my own setting, it pleased me to think of the choir as representing the worldly creatures (people and animals) present at Jesus’s birth; and the saxophone as an otherworldly, mystical presence hovering above. It’s a fanciful notion, but I found it inspiring.
