In seven episodes Joyce musically portrays the erotic reveries of the protagonist Leopold Bloom from chapter 11 of James Joyce's Ulysses. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q53550). As most of my instrumental pieces, Joyce is also based on a literary source. My first string quartet (Korrespondenz) transferred the correspondence between Leopold and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, at times word by word, to the world of music, whose strong dramatic character effectively reflects the conflicts between father and son. I found the closest literary references to my second string quartet, which takes its listeners to the world of Odysseus and the sirens, in the works of Joyce, Homer and Kafka. The string quartet is enriched with an additional soprano part, which tells the classic story from three different perspectives. The complete title of my second string quartet is The Sirens Cycle, consisting of three movements: Joyce – Homer – Kafka. The twenty-minute-long duration of the first movement of the cycle “Joyce†allows it to be performed independently. This time, the vocal part accompanied by the strings is replaced by a solo clarinet, which – instead of giving a verbal account of Chapter 11 of Joyce’s Ulysses – renders the quite masculine protagonist, Leopold Bloom’s musing over the attractive barmaids with befittingly vigorous musical gestures. A couple of lifetimes ago (or so it seems now) I wrote a quartet of sonatas: one apiece for flute, viola, oboe, and the present work for cello. I thought of them as representing Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter respectively. This one, dating from 1972, expands the concept of a rondo to dimensions covering an entire multi-movement sonata. There are the traditional three movements one would expect to find, but they are tied together through unmetered sections for solo cello set between them. In this way, the true movements almost function as episodes in a giant rondo. Additionally, the solo interpolations form an entity in themselves, each picking up where the previous one left off. And if that weren’t enough, thematic material in the real movements is often first presented in the Interpolations, so it is difficult to tell where an idea really belongs. Given my philosophical leanings at the time (it was the 70s, remember!), this ambiguity was precisely the point.Performance time is approximately 12 minutes.

A Violin Sonata written in 2019, but which sounds more like 1869? There’s a reason for that: apart from the obvious and enjoyable challenge of writing an extended faux-19th century piece, the sonata is dedicated to the memory of my mother who - being a Brahms & Tchaikovsky gal through and through - had little use for music written after 1900. For instance, I remember when I was a lad and my father and I would listen to Stravinsky’s Le Sacre, Mom would always go out for a walk until it blew over. The Sonata has four movements: I. Largo-Moderato (7:10), II. Allegretto (5:00), III. Andante (7:00), IV. Bagatelles. Allegro non troppo (6:00). Total performance time is about 25 to 26 minutes. The audio file accompanying this description gives you a couple of minutes of each movement: most of the exposition of I; the end of the Scherzo and beginning of the Trio (with its curious three-measure phrases) of II; the closing measures of III; and the beginning of IV. (The sonata has been read by professional players and is guaranteed to work, but at this writing it has not been performed or recorded. Therefore the audio file is only a computer playback. Living musicians will be able to make far more sense of it.)

These eight Chorale Preludes were all written between March and May of 2020, during the worldwide Coronavirus Pandemic. Unlike the earlier companion volumes of shorter English and German preludes, which feature a variety of moods and themes, these American examples all seem to center around the closely related ideas of hope and quiet confidence. While this was not my intention back when I was choosing hymns to work with, I am pleased with the unity of the set. Taken as a whole, they are filled with tidings of comfort and joy. Stylistically, the preludes range from the baroque bounce of Praise Him, Jesus Our Blessed Redeemer, through the sturdy On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand (with its chords sounding as if they had been carved from granite blocks) and a surprisingly delicate I Stand Amazed. There is a fair amount of canonic leading and following in He Leadeth Me; Great is Thy Faithfulness is the expressive heart of the set; and we end by returning to 18th century ritornello models with Blessed Assurance. Through it all I think I have managed to avoid any sense of academic stuffiness - in fact there are several moments which may sound almost playful if not handled rightly.As with the Shorter English and German Preludes, most of these are between one and two minutes in length, and each fits on one or two pages, arranged so as to avoid page turns. As always, durations and sources are provided for your planning.

I have studied the piano since 5 years old under Mr Joseph Toh and I graduated from LASALLE College of the Arts with a Diploma in Music in 2013, majoring in Music Composition under Malaysian composer Mr Chong Kee Yong and Singaporean composer Mrs Joyce Koh Bee TuanAbout The Destruction of a Twinkling StarThis piece is written for Violin and Piano.Ever wondered what happen to a star when it explodes? I decided to write a short fantasia about this phenomenon. I decided to use the very famous opening of the Mozart’s Ah vous dirai-je maman Variations for this piece. A very sweet sounding opening to a devastated effect. I have decided to use a pretty unconventional notation. I think a star is full of mystery, and you always get surprises when you improvise. In my music, I like to try new things! And of course, despite new things, I will always use back my own prestige extracts from some of my works. I have used an almost similar notation in my Sky 2 for piano solo, and the last movement of the Six Improvisatory Pieces for solo piano.The interval between the highest and the lowest pitch of the Mozart’s Variations is a Major 6th. To get the intended transcription into my work, I cut the keyboard into 6 different ranges. Because the range of the violin is not as big as the piano, I cut the violin into 3 different ranges. If want will to realize, Mozart uses all 6 notes of the opening C major scale, and hence, I transcribe it into chord clusters into my work. The Destruction of a Twinkling Star is dedicated to my friends Miss Lee Xin Yee and Mr Kelvin Koh.
