Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q43153). Sinuhe the Egyptian is a historical novel written in 1945 by the Finnish author Mika Waltari (* 19. SeptemberHelsinki). He was one of the best known authors in Finland and his works were translated into 30 languages. 1908 in Helsinki, †26. August 1979 also in This is the story of the adventures of the doctor SinuheCrete and other regions of the known world at that time. who lived from 1390 to1335 B.C. who was initially the personal physician at the court of the Pharaoh Akhenaten before subsequently visiting Babylon, Waltari was inspired by the Ancient Egyptian text The Story of Sinuhe which is considered to be one of the earliest literary works (20th century B.C.). The author additionally undertook comprehensive historical studies, and the novel with its extensive cultural history and customs of the Orient in pre-Christian times became a worldwide success. The novel also gained recognition among Egyptologists. Sinuhe the Egyptian was in turn an inspiration for the composer Olli Mustonen to create a work for the “archaic†instrument the oboe. The original version of this two-movement piece additionally fulfilled the composer’s wish to dedicate a composition to his wife Sole who is also an oboist.The current version for flute was written for the Danish flutist Janne Thomsen.Der 1945 erschienene finnische Roman Sinuhe der Ägypter schildert das abenteuerliche Leben des Leibarztes von Pharao Echnaton. Das bedeutende literarische Werk inspirierte Olli Mustonen, ein Stück für das „archaische Instrument Oboe zu schreiben. Die Originalfassung dieser zweisätzigen Komposition widmete er seiner Frau Sole, die selbst Oboe spielt. Die vorliegende Fassung für Flöte schrieb Mustonen für die dänische Flötistin Janne Thomsen.

English.The text for my work Taivaanvalot is composed of fragments of a story appearing in the Kalevala – a collection of Finnish heroic folk poetry compiled by Elias Lönnrot (1802–1884). As much of it is simply impossible to translate, I have felt that with the help of music it could be possible also to convey some of the untranslatable and at times even hypnotic and shamanistic qualities of this poetry to an audience not fluent in our unusual language. It is as if the listener had been thrown onto the surface of a hostile planet, devoid of any comprehensible life. In the second movement, vivid life forms begin to appear, at first frightening, but soon starting to take gentler forms, which eventually start to take the music closer to the key of G major. The last movement starts with a recitative, a gesture often found in late Beethoven. There is a feeling that we are approaching something important – mysterious gates slowly open, revealing a Cavatina, followed by a set of variations. The progression of these variations eventually leads also to dissonant memories from the beginning of the work, but those dissonances are finally resolved in the last variation, which ultimately finds its peace and begins its ascension toward the skies and to the radiant brightness of G major. After a nightmarish episode, more hopeful music suddenly starts to appear. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q49206). It is not a coincidence that many composers seem to have written some of their most important and meaningful works for the string quartet. I grew up listening to string quartets, especially those by Beethoven and Bartók, and those works have had a tremendous impact on what I am as a composer, musician and as a human being. In many of my works one can see some sort of a journey from darkness toward the light, in various forms. In the case of my String Quartet this journey is exceptionally arduous. There is an element of hope in some sections of the third movement, but the hope it offers is more of an otherworldly nature. In the beginning of the fourth movement the very dramatic elements of the beginning of the quartet return. Just at the point, when the listener thinks that the darker elements will ultimately prevail, the music reaches an important turning point. Through a heroic, dissonant struggle it reaches the finale, which is full of ecstasy and instrumental joy. I have given the finale, along with the metronome marking, the indication Con fuoco all’Ungharese - all this of course as a homage to the great Hungarian master, one of my greatest musical heroes already since the very early days of my life. (Olli Mustonen).

The sonata was named after Jahkin Iivana. Iivana (1843-1911) was one of the last great representatives of the traditional runic chant and a master of the Finnish national instrument, the kantele. Mustonen has succeeded in imitating the sound of the Finnish national instrument for the guitar in a fascinating way and created an atmosphere which makes the magic of the mythical worlds almost tangible.

What is remarkable is that 'his instrument' is not placed in the foreground of his works. He rather composed pieces for strings, sonatas with piano accompaniment, orchestral works and even a piece for guitar referring to the history of his home country Finland. The cello sonata was premiered by Mustonen with the cellist Daniel Müller-Schott in Hamburg. No special emphasis is given to polyphonic coexistence; instead, the piano, playing chordally, acts as a real accompaniment most of the time. Cantilenas of the cello, tricky rhythms, and almost symphonic sound eruptions make the piece a sure-fire hit with the public.

The piano plays in chordal style most of the time as real accompaniment, with polyphonic ensemble playing not being given special emphasis. The sonata is characterized by melodious cantilenas of the violin, intricate rhythms and almost symphonic tonal eruptions alike. The piece demands great technical skills while actually seeming to be easy to grasp. Mustonen is one of the virtuoso pianists-composers of the younger generation. In his works, he often refers to the history and culture of his home country Finland.
