Today he is best known internationally as the composer of the popular jaunty march The Parade of the Tin Soldiers, also known as The Parade of the Wooden Soldiers. Jessel was a prolific composer who wrote hundreds of light orchestral pieces, piano pieces, songs, waltzes, mazurkas, marches, choruses, and other salon music. He achieved considerable acclaim with a number of his operettas - in particular Schwarzwaldmädel(Black Forest Girl), which remains popular to this day.Because Jessel was a Jew by birth (he converted to Christianity at the age of 23), with the rise of Nazism in the late 1920s, his composing virtually came to an end, and his musical works, which had been very popular, were suppressed and nearly forgotten.In Great Britain the piece was used for many years in BBC radio's Children's Hour to introduce the series Toytown, based on stories by S. G. Hulme Beaman. Six Bagatelles for Clarinet and Piano were composed in March, 2020 for Beethoven 250. They are drawn from Beethoven piano music. The sources are piano sonatas, bagatelles, and a landler. With my ever faithful friend and collaborator, London Clarinetist Alison Eales in mind, I sought to add to the Clarinet repertoire. Having written five pieces over the past two years in English manner for Clarinet (English Sonatina, English Autumn, London Concerto, Enchanted London, Postcards from England), a tip of the hat to the Austrian Titan seemed appropriate. Beethoven, unlike Mozart before him and Brahms after him, wrote no solo music for Clarinet. The Trio and scoring in Symphonies are his unique contributions to the repertoire. Beethoven was a contemporary of Weber who wrote extensively for solo Clarinet. With most of the passages being arrangements, my original homage passages frame the settings and are juxtaposed with them. The tone of the music is one of homage and recollection with no intent to imitate or parody the great master. Bagatelles are by nature lighter fare of shorter duration. Hence no long, authentic passages with inherent mood swings and elaborations. By adapting the music to the bagatelle form, it reflects the less ponderous side of the composer. Although Beethoven’s music is capable of great depth and despair, the more transcendent, pastoral, and exuberant moods prevail in these pieces. The final two movements, Recitative and Rondo, draw on the Waldstein Sonata and Emperor Piano Concerto, and Sonata Op 2 No3 as well. The Rondo theme is in Eb, my own, is reminiscent of the Emperor Concerto in it intense yet lilting motif. Perhaps the listener will hear hints of Weber, a clarinet favorite of mine, as well in this final movement. Two movements are scored for Clarinet in A, and four movements for Clarinet in Bb.

In the same way, the music completely retrogrades half way through the piece. The music beings lightly and grows more dense towards the middle just like the paint that will fill around the folded line of the butterfly. Once again, the music slowly gets lighter toward to end creating a reflection of the piece. The piece is fantastical in nature. Remembering nostalgically the long summer days as a child.

This piece combines the standard text of Ave Maria in English with the text from Proverbs 31 known as Woman of ValorI wrote this piece to venerate Mary and also to venerate all women and their personal strengths. I consider this Easy to Medium in difficulty, as it has a lot of unison singing and simple four part choral singing. This would be perfect to use to in a Christmas, Mother's Day, or regular service that highlights contributions of women, and the personal strength necessary to surmount ordeals in life. The middle melody is taken from the Gregorian Chant Ave Maria but with words from Proverbs. It should be sung in the style of a legato, light chant, yet with crisp consonants to hear all the words. I am working on an SSA version of the same piece. For those who do not have a budget for a harpist, I also have a backing track available with the harp and organ. The organ is lighter, so an organist could play along and be dominant, and the harp would be heard most. The harp part is attached score.
