Instrumentation: 3333-4331-timp-2perc-cel-hp-strings Program Notes: When Charles Ansbacher, music director of the Boston Landmarks Orchestra, commissioned me to write Pluto as a grand finale for The Planets by Gustav Holst, I immediately thought of Pluto, the Disney character; but common sense took over when I sat down to work. So instead of Disney’s faithful dog, I gravitated to the Pluto of Roman mythology. After a long battle with the Titans, the three brothers, Zeus, Poseidon and Pluto, divided the world among themselves. Zeus had the sky; Poseidon, the sea; and Pluto, the Underworld. According to mythology, the spirits of the dead, whether good or bad, enter the Underworld. Cerberus, a vicious three-headed beast, stands guard at the entrance - preventing the living from entering the world of the dead. The movement begins with a fanfare: Cerberus at the gates of the Underworld. Then a grand waltz materializes in the bass: Pluto dances!! As the waltz fades away, a lyrical tune emerges: Persephone, the wife of Pluto, appears. The work ends with a reprise of the opening fanfare, slightly altered.

Was lebet, was schwebet (composed 2021, duration ca. 5’) is less a chorale prelude, and more a prelude and fugue. The prelude is a free fantasy based mostly on the opening notes of the hymn tune. It alternates short pedal solos with showy figures in the manuals. The fugue is based on the first six measures of the hymn tune, and thoroughly investigates the subject. It concludes in a brief flourish, reminiscent of the opening fantasia. A final fugato presents the entire hymn tune, in augmentation, beginning in the bass (on the pedals) and moving to the soprano. The piece is joyful and exuberant from beginning to end.Technical note: despite the extensive counterpoint and manual flourishes, this piece is quite approachable, being easier, on the whole, than a typical Bach prelude and fugue.

The work was written in memory of American composer Daniel Pinkham (1923-2006) – a composerwhose music, advocacy, and personal support meant a great deal to me over the years I knew him.Throughout his distinguished career as a composer, keyboard performer (on harpsichord and organ),teacher, and conductor, Dan Pinkham served as an inspiration for countless American composers andmusicians.I had planned to write a solo flute sonata for a few years and made many sketches towards such a work. Inearly 2007, reflecting on Dan’s passing in December 2006, I threw out everything I already had and begananew, conceiving the work both as a tribute to Dan and a piece for his close friend and frequentcollaborator Fenwick Smith.The five movements of the work each explore ongoing transformation of their opening materials. Thoughthere are elegiac moments in the work, the tone throughout is zestfully celebratory, with touches of humor,representing Pinkham’s irrepressible and memorable wit.The first movement, Caprice, flies through a series of arpeggio figurations in changing modes (often adifferent mode “going up†from “coming downâ€).The second movement, Folk Arabesques, is based on a Kentucky folk ballad, “John Riley.†The unusual leapsin the original melody and its modal shifts are explored in the surrounding commentaries, which takecombine bits of the folk ballad with arabesque figurations.The third movement, March, leaps through the total chromatic spectrum. Though the march is a form oftenignored by American composers, Pinkham often employed such sections and rhythms in his own music.The fourth movement, Aria and Interludes, uses a common Pinkham form—where the basic musicaldialogue (in this case a straightforward ‘aria’ melody in G minor) is interrupted by “interludes†ofcontrasting nature. In the case of this movement, it is gradually revealed that the interludes are alteredversions of the aria material.The fifth and final movement, Hootenanny at the Gates of Heaven, is a joyous romp, combining together boththe chromatic/modal shifts of the earlier movements with pentatonic figurations and melodies in the spiritof American folk fiddling.

While Hail To The King will never be A7X's most popular or Critically Acclaimed (...see what I did there) record, it did provide us with some of the catchiest guitar hooks & drum grooves in this band's entire catalog. The opening track, Shepherd of Fire, is an absolute banger of a crossover tune that appeals to rock & metal fans alike. Consequently, like so many Avenged hits, it plays quite well as an instrumental cover and can be adapted to some interesting instrumentations beyond the original 2-guitar, bass, drums format in which it was recorded.Some years ago, I performed this tune with a 4-piece band on my college recital and it was an absolute blast! Whether out of sentimentality or just sheer boredom (I write this as we are right in the thick of the Covid-19 pandemic and gigs are... scarce, to say the least), I decided to resurrect that arrangement and clean up my shorthand charts into some real parts so that you, too, might have the joy of bringing this hard rock anthem to life with your own ensemble.The purchase of this chart includes:- Fully notated parts for drum set, bass, & rhythm guitar- Fully notated Lead part that merges the brass, lead guitar, & vocal parts into one cohesive chart- Lyrics & vocal melodies notated on lead part (if using a vocalist)- Full transcription of Synyster Gates's original guitar solo! (printed on lead part)This arrangement can be performed by as few as 4 instrumentalists. My original performance was with electric violin, guitar, bass & drums, but with the updated Lead chart the violin could easily be replaced by keyboards, a second guitar, or any instrumentalist that can read at concert pitch. This rousing piece finishes with a return to the opening material, but spinning off into a fast and furious coda.
