TWO FROM SEVEN for Big Band- This piece is a re-thinking of the second movement from Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony Op. 92 written in 1811. Beethoven commented that he thought it was one of his best works. The orchestral version has been used numerous times for numerous purposes. One of the more recent uses was in the 2011 film THE KING’S SPEECH. It is a slow burn style piece. It starts small with a relentless rhythmic and harmonic ostinato that builds and builds to a big band shout chorus. There is a trumpet solo indicated, but the solo could be played by any member of the band. There are optional parts for vibes and tuba. The work is not overly difficult and could be mastered by a high school band with little effort. Paramount to a good performance is articulation and dynamics. Also, the blending of muted brass with saxophones should be considered. There are no doublings. Leade Tpt C6 (D6 opt.)

Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755023). Legacy is a three movement composition that makes social commentary on the issue of global warming. It was commission and premiered by the Washington Sinfonietta, Rufus Jones, conductor, and later transcribed by the composer for quartet for the chamber music group, enhaké. I. Conflicts - This movement begins with a cry from native cultures admonishing our neglect of the environment. The cry is interspersed with debate regarding the seriousness of global warming. The debate grows stronger as the cries grow weaker. The debate is quieted by a measure of repeated chords that could be the words, stop it! stop it now!. A weak cry in the clarinet brings the introduction to a close. An Allegro section follows with a rhythmic and primitive sounding section representing the underdeveloped nations that are destroying the rain forests for economic gain. This material evolves into a more harmonic and contrapuntal section representing industrialized nations reluctant to change, also for economic reasons. Things quiet down as the music takes the listener to another part of the globe, East Asia. Conflict is again present in this section. The music returns to a varied restatement of the industrialized nations music before traveling to India for a section influenced by Raga. This section builds in dissonance until we hear the repeated stop it now chords from the introduction. A brief reprise of the cries bring the movement to a close. II. Consequences - This movement evokes a somber mood that is reflective of living in a climate of extremes. The movement is in arch form as it begins and ends with open harmony reflective of barren lands that once were fertile. The middle section serves as a climax expressive the harshness of the climate. Colleen McCollough’s book, A Creed for the Third Millennium was a source of inspiration for this movement. III. Sacrifice and Compromise - The movement begins with a strong section that suggests progress. It is followed by a quieter and intense section that alternates lyrical lines over a staccato ostinato that creates a sense of urgency. The opening section returns and is followed by a development of the ostinato section. This section is symbolic of how ideas need to be adapted in order for progress to be made. The opening section returns once more before leading into the concluding section where there is coming together of the instruments on a long lyrical line representing more and more people working together for change. The movement ends with a sense of triumph over adversity. Legacy has been recorded by enhaké on the Emeritus Recordings CD Legacy.

This is from a suite of pieces written variously for recorder orchestra and for chamber orchestra The five movements are: 1 Meinau Rag 2 An Amble round Mercury 3 Pretty How Town 4 Landscape before sunrise 5 Little Laser Lady Each movement has its own story and reflects various places where the composer has lived or poems that have inspired him: Meinau Rag was written in honour of his 8 month stay in La Meinau, a suburb of Strasbourg, while teaching English at the nearby Hotellery School - it was one of several ragtimes, a style he experimented with on the guitar at that time. An Amble round Mercury refers to the pond and associated statue of Mercury in the centre of Tom Quad at his college, Christ Church Oxford. The ostinato theme is one that he has used on many pieces and was originally written to accompany a setting from the Book of Elijah - and in that day thou shalt say O Lord - in his college days. Pretty How Town, a perky and rhythmically complex piece, is based on the poem - anyone lived in a pretty how town by e.e.cummings. The more laid back Landscape before sunrise is based on a setting of many ways in which the world says Goodnight and is inspired by the view from the composer's 18th floor flat in Aldgate East overlooking a multicultural population. The rhythms of the original song Goodnight follow the phrases in each language: Good Night, buona notte, gute Nacht, kali nykhta, oyasumi nasai, nos da...etc Little Laser Lady, an upbeat end to the suite, is based on a poem by a friend of the composer, whose girlfriend (and wife to be) would always visit him in her Laser (a make of car in Australia) (She is the sun in the afternoon, she is the night's familiar, she comes on a beam of yellow gold light......) The orchestration is: Piccolo [except in the 4th movement], 2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, Clarinet, Bassoon and string orchestra including double bass. The pdf file contains the score and separate parts. The violin joins with melodic 16th note variations with the Cello melody. A new bridge section follows by the Piano without the Ostinato’s presence with Bass accompaniment by the Cello. The Violin then joins the Piano with an accompanying harmony. A Dal Segno to the Sign follows for a repeat of the original section followed by the ending at the Coda. This piece is a workout primarily for the violin, but is well worth the effort.

Interplay was composed for the Maxwell Trio, an ensemble consisting of Kansas State University faculty members with the unusual combination of instruments of bassoon, tuba, and piano. It was premiered at the 2013 International Double Reed Society Conference. The composition can be performed with trombone or euphonium substituting for the bassoon and bass clarinet substituting for the tuba (parts are provided). The title of this three-movement work was derived from the large use of counterpoint throughout the composition. The first movement is in a quasi sonata form. The second movement is in an ABA form. The middle section of this movement uses an ostinato to accompany the melodic interplay. The last movement is lighter than the first two movements and utilizes a loose rondo form. Its allegro tempo and frequent meter changes add a humorous quality. The interplay in this movement relies less on counterpoint. Instead, the shifting of colors through alternating the melodic material among the three instruments creates interplay between sections within the rondo form.

Published by Robert Chamberlin (A0.917288). The Child is a Song was composed in 1994 and is dedicated to Dawn Schuessler and the handbell choir of Gethsemane Lutheran Church in St. Louis, MO. The premiere performance of this piece happened that year on Christmas Eve, performed by singer/songwriter and guitarist Peter Mayer, accompanied by piano and two members of the Gethsemane handbell choir playing on bell trees to accommodate the ostinato patterns. This version is for piano and tenor voice, with optional handbells. If handbells are used, they should duplicate the right hand piano part at m. 16 – 28, m. 53 – 54, and m. 59 – 64. These measures have been marked on the score with an * sign. The sound clip attached is a digital track which is not ideal since the lyrics are not sung by the digital tenor. Hopefully, this does not detract from the overall score.
