It is headed ‘1’ because it is preceded in the set by a Prologue: ‘Farewell We Call to Hearth and Hall’, which is also available from Sheet Music Plus. A comment on the collection of Tolkien songs by an Oxford piano teacher: ‘For those who only know Tolkien via the recent blood-and-thunder films, this song-cycle by Charles McCreery will give a very different angle on the classic saga. Published by Lisa L Ochoco (A0.559766). John Dowland (1562 – 1626) was a lutenist and singer in the Renaissance Period. The lute was a stringed instrument, most closely related to our guitar. He wrote quite a lot of music that is still played and sung by guitarists and singers today. Although his music was written for stringed instruments in general, many arrangers have adapted his works for wind instruments.This collection of 20 songs from his Third Book of Songs is arranged for flute quartet – 4 C flutes or 3 C flutes and alto. Most of these songs are rather short, so it is recommended that each song is played in its entirety at least twice. I arranged these songs so that the 1st flute always has the melody. You may be familiar with this Bob Dylan song, or perhaps the popular Joan Baez cover; it was Baez's version that I first heard, and I was immediately struck by the juxtaposition of the sweetly lilting vocal line (and gently strumming guitar accompaniment) with the apocalyptic text. The words, while strange and surreal, seemed to perfectly depict the sense of unrest and violence that fills our world today. The intimacy of the repeated farewells to a loved one while the world literally falls apart feels especially poignant; the almost absurd contrast between lines like I'll see you in a while and the sky is falling reminds me of the feeling of wanting to draw inward and deny the frightening things happening around us while also being unable to ignore them. I began imagining what the music would sound like if it reflected the sense of chaos and destruction of Dylan's poetry, and commissioned Melissa Dunphy to compose such an arrangement for voice and viola.

It's great for: - Church Services - Missionary Farewells and Homecomings - Firesides - Youth Choirs - Adult Choirs - Soprano and Tenor Duet Purpose/Message: The medley's purpose is to invigorate us and to encourage us to be brave in sharing truth. It emphasizes the concepts of pressing on, having courage, and not fearing. Difficulty: Medium (There are some independent singing sections, some notes at the top of the soprano and tenor range, and a couple spots with less typical harmonies. It is, however, not a difficult piece overall. Those who are accustomed to singing in choirs will have no trouble but will be challenged enough to enjoy the piece.) Range: The notes are within range for a somewhat experienced or serious singer. If using in a choir, you can have the higher notes sung one octave lower by those out of range, or add a harmonic note as needed. There are only a couple of instances where this might be needed. Solutions to Problems: If you have youth afraid to go on missions, this song will help them take courage and be brave. If you have adults who are faltering from fear (as all do on occasion), it is hoped this song will bolster their courage and resolve. Duration of Work: This medley is approximately 4:12 minutes long.
