Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.817619). James Alan Bland, composer of “In the Evening by the Moonlight,” was a prolific song writer. He is said to have created the words and music for more than 600 compositions. Born in 1854 to a free African American family in Flushing, New York, he made a name for himself as musician, composer and minstrel performer. Among his compositions were “Oh, Dem Golden Slippers,” “In the Morning in the Bright Light” and “De Golden Wedding.” His most famous song by far was “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny,” which the State of Virginia used as its official anthem for over 50 years. Bland, in keeping with his persona as a minstrel, wrote the lyrics to “In the Evening by the Moonlight” in dialect. Years passed and sensitivities changed, but the song’s poignant melody and basic sentiment survived. Latter day recordings, such as those by Bing Crosby and the Ray Charles Singers, dropped the dialect and objectionable terms. One of the most notable versions was by singer, pianist and civil rights activist Nina Simone, released in 1960 on the album Nina at Newport. This brass quintet version begins with the group instrumentally humming along under an eight-measure Horn in F introduction. The first statement of the melody initially takes the form of a partial call-and-response between a Trombone/Horn duo and Trumpet 1, then switches to an exchange between Trumpet 1 and Tuba. Next, the melody is repeated but in a rhythmic pattern reminiscent of the 1880 tune “Here Dem Bells”; Tuba plays counterpoint. Third time around, the melody is presented almost exactly as Bland wrote it and as Hitchcock’s Music Store published it in 1880. Finally, the tempo slows and the melody is presented as so many have sung it around campfires at YMCA, 4-H and other youth camps all over the country: softly and tenderly. The arrangement ends with a brief recapitulation of the introduction. There are no really difficult or tricky rhythms in this arrangement. Trumpet 1’s highest note, which occurs in Section D, is A above its staff; Tuba’s lowest, G below the staff. Otherwise, there are no exceptionally high or low notes. The piece opens in the key of F major then, about halfway through, changes to G major. Tempo opens with a suggested MM of 104, speeds up to 120, slows to 66, increases again to 122 and finally slows to 66. Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 4 minutes, 22 seconds. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1093770).     The dictionary defines revel as “a time or instance of carefree fun.†The verb tipple refers to the imbibing of spirits. A tippler is one who drinks beer, wine, whiskey or other such spirituous liquids. So a tipplers revel would be a gathering of folks who, in the words of Dolly Parton’s “Two Doors Down,†are “laughing and drinking and having a party.†    This Tipplers Revel is a compilation of traditional drinking songs. It begins and ends with that bane of school trips, faculty sponsors, bus drivers and chaperones, “99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall.†And between those two bookends come “Rye Whiskey,†“Little Brown Jug,†“Landlord, Fill the Flowing Bowl,†“Jimmy Crack Corn,†“Beer, Beer, Beer (An Ode to Charlie Mops, The Man Who Invented Beer),†“Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight,†“Wein, Weib und Gesang [Wine, Woman, and Song],†“Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes,†“There Is a Tavern in the Town,†“Good Night, Ladies,†“How Dry I Am,†and brief quotes from about a half dozen other melodies associated with quaffing.     For the most part, this arrangement’s time signature is 4/4 and should be played at about 120 BPM. There are, however, two sections of 3/4 time, one of which is marked “tempo di valse,†and the opening and ending few measures should be played rather slowly.     The music should be well within the normal range of the group. Possible exceptions: trumpets play their A above the staff a couple of times.     There are quite a few 16th notes in the allegro sections. (And one could make the argument that at least two sections ought to have been written in 6/8 time. But they weren’t.)     Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 6 minutes, 43 seconds. Sweetwater Brass Press #4111581. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808688). Henry Clay Work, Civil War era song writer and abolitionist, composed Kingdom Coming in 1862. Chicago’s Root & Cady published it in April of that year, Christy’s Minstrels premiered it and it became enormously popular. The lyrics to Kingdom Coming, also known as The Year of Jubilo, were written as though slaves in the Confederacy were celebrating their upcoming freedom. However, the song was actually released eight months before President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Interestingly, Kingdom Coming also gained popularity in the South. A Southern edition was published in August in 1864, and the song remained a favorite in the former Confederacy for some years. Kingdom Coming has been used as theme or background music in a number of film, television and radio settings. Almost certainly its most popular iteration in modern times was the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra’s 1952 recording under the title Doodletown Fifers. This arrangement is a show-off piece for each member of the quintet. It moves along at a brisk pace of about 108, begins in the key of C and changes to A-flat, then B-flat. The first time through the melody, all instruments perform ensemble. Each succeeding repetition features an instrumentalist, starting with tuba and working up to Trumpet 1. The piece ends with another ensemble version. There are no exceptionally out-of-normal-playing-range notes: Trumpets 1 and 2 both play their B-flat below the scale several times, and Trumpet 2 plays G below the scale; Horn in F also plays its G below the scale; Trombone’s range is G at the bottom of the scale to D above the scale; Tuba’s lowest note is A-flat below the scale. Trumpet 1 will probably triple tongue its repetition of the melody, and some triple tonguing may be called for near the end of the piece for Trumpets 1 and 2 and Trombone. Instrumentation is flexible; the following is a guide: Part 1 - Violin 1, flute 1 (doubling piccolo if possible) oboe 1, Part 2 - Violin 2, flute 2, oboe 2 (doubling tenor recorder if possible), clarinet 1, trumpet Part 3 - Viola, clarinet 2, horn in F, Eb horn (2 players doubling harmonicas in C) Part 4 - Cello, bassoon Part 5 - Double bass, bass guitar (or Cello 2 - playing as if usual bass clef, but an octave lower where possible) SATB voices (doubling metal spoons and pitch pipes) Optional:Percussion (one player) - claves, glockenspiel (could be a child’s toy instrument such as an ‘Angel’ glockenspiel), mark tree, spring drum (thunder shaker), frame drum, musical jewelry box (or similar clockwork device).Should a glockenspiel not be available, a special part has been created which arranges the glockenspiel for two flutes, together with the other percussion music. This special part is not visible in the score. Keyboard instrument with sustaining capability - piano sound Instructions: Wind players can breathe ad lib. during any very long notes. From letter D onwards non-wind players who are not soloists blow across the top of small bottles. The pitches produced are not specified, but they should not be shrill. A soft breathy tone is preferred. About half of the voices play pairs of metal spoons (share printed part between two singers and anyone not holding the music holds metal spoons). Hold the spoons one in each hand, and strike the larger ends together. Spoons are struck together where shown with a large patterned note head. Strike rapidly where a tremolo sign is given. Four singers play pitch tuning pipes: 1 Soprano and 1 Alto play viola/cello pitch tuning pipes, 1 Tenor and 1 Bass play violin pitch tuning pipes Pitch pipe playing is indicated with square note heads - player should breathe ad lib. during very long notes. Where there are very long sung notes, the singers may stagger breathing ad lib. Spoken sounds are indicated with x note heads and with the text in italics. There are many pauses. These can be of varying duration, but on the whole they should not hold up the momentum of the piece, but be of sufficient duration to establish the solo and pitch pipe notes. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808696). We Gather Together is one of the best known Thanksgiving hymns. It originated in the Netherlands in 1597 as Wilt Heden Nu Treden, written by Adrianus Valerius to commemorate a victory in the Dutch war of liberation from Spanish oppression. It was first published in Valerius’ 1626 collection of Dutch folks songs, Nederlandtsche Gedenck-Clanck. In 1877, the Austrian composer and conductor, Eduard Kremser, published arrangements for six songs from Valerius’ collection, one of which was Wilt Heden Nu Treden. Seven years later, American musicologist Theodore Baker wrote a modern English version of the hymn. It is Baker’s words and Kremser’s melody that are today sung as We Gather Together.  This arrangement consists of six versions of the Kremser tune. The first is a fairly straightforward melody-and-harmony rendition, except that Trumpet 1 begins solo, and the other instruments join the playing group one at a time. Succeeding versions consist of variations, until the final, which, for the four upper instruments, reverts to a simple statement of melody-plus-harmony. Tuba, on the other hand, has a wonderful running bass part. The piece ends with a brief diminuendo and ritardando repetition of the last four measures. The key signature changes twice: C to D and back to C. There are no tricky rhythmic figures. As for high notes: Trumpet 1 plays one quarter-note A above its staff; Trombone has two high-F eighth-notes.   This arrangement was completed in 2019, and performance time runs about 2 minutes, 55 seconds. The piano scores used for the original sheet music of these folk songs, hymns, and spirituals of the 1800’s were purposely made simple in order to sell as many copies as possible. The idea being that if someone in every family could read the most basic piano score, then the rest of the family could gather around the piano (usually an inexpensive upright) and sing along in the days before records, cassette tapes, CD’s, Radio, Television, iPods, YouTube etc. Nowadays, the few people who can sight-read at the piano are more musically literate, often being able to read and play classical compositions by Bach, Handel, Scarlatti, Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. They, therefore, deserve more interesting and rewarding arrangements of these wonderful musical treasures of the 1800’s. Furthermore, since these arrangements for piano and voice can also be played as piano solos, the piano scores are designed to be of enjoyable musical interest on their own; that is, orchestrated for the piano as if they were sketches for an ensemble of instruments. These arrangements can also be considered theatrical improvisations on the original sheet music. Following the best improvisational guidelines, they are based on 1) the implications of the title; 2) the meaning and words of the lyrics; 3) the melody; & 4) the harmonic pattern. For example: Oh, Susanna! is obviously a humorous nonsense song and is therefore arranged to sound carefree, jaunty, and joyful. Also, since the singer refers to my banjo on my knee, the piano arrangement imitates the sound of a banjo as it is played for singing and dancing, strumming its rhythmic way through the simple harmonic changes. This arrangement has the drive and momentum of the original song but with delicate moments, and some 5-part harmony as the song progresses. VOCAL LAYOUT:The melody, or lead line, is divided amongst the vocal parts to give variety. The B.G (background) parts replicate the instrumental accompaniment of the original track, filling out the arrangement and creating the contemporary texture that is at the heart of Pop A Cappella. When it's performed, it should be heavy on the rhythm and bass! The Rhythm (Beatbox) and Bass should be a feature, and they provide the arrangement with the groove and vibe it needs.The dynamics give an indication which vocal parts should be strongest at any given moment, but changes may need to be made depending on the number / balance of singers, and the strengths of each vocal section. Probably the accomplishment for which he’s most remembered today is his composing of There’ll Be Some Changes Made, published in 1921. Billy Higgins, popular stage comedian, wrote the lyrics, and Ethel Waters, then just 24, recorded the song on the Black Swan label. The disc quickly achieved hit status, and the song has remained popular across multiple musical platform styles ever since. This arrangement is a happy, fun piece and includes some of the great (and familiar) Vaudeville-style ornaments and phrases. It’s a real toe-tapper. For the most part this arrangement is up-tempo, about 140 bpm. It does slow to 92 at the first iteration of the verse and again for the final ¬6 measures of the piece. Time signature is 4/4 except for measure 89, which is 6/4. The key is B-flat throughout, and the melody weaves among all instruments. Trumpet 1 plays B5 (B-flat trumpet’s high C) briefly at measures 4 and 35 and for two measures at the very end of the piece. Tuba plays G3 briefly several times in measures 90-93. Other than that, there are no exceptionally out-of-normal-range notes. Trumpets 1 and 2 may wish to double-tongue at measure 64. Brahms composed Ein deutsches Requiem, nach Worten der heiligen Schrift, his longest composition, during the period, 1865-1868. For the libretto, he eschewed the Latin text of the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass, using instead verses he chose from the German-language Luther Bible. Thus, it was A German Requiem. The Roman Church’s Requiem Mass begins with prayers for the dead; Brahms, on the other hand, chose to console the living and framed his first movement around the second of the Beatitudes, Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.  The first movement is, indeed, comforting, filled with warmth and beauty. This arrangement retains Brahms’ original choral parts and translates the orchestral accompaniment to the five quietly playing brass instruments. The audio sample was digitally created, so the choral part of the arrangement can be heard but without words. This arrangement was completed in 2017 and runs about 10 minutes, 32 seconds. The melody originated with Richard Milburn, a Philadelphia African-American who has been described variously as a panhandling busker and as a musically inclined barber. A songwriter and publisher by the name of Septimus Winner heard Milburn's tune, arranged it, added words, put it into print and claimed credit for its creation under the pseudonym Alice Hawthorne. Supposedly, Winner sold the rights to the song for five dollars. Listen to the Mocking Bird grew to be one of the most popular songs of the mid-19th century, a real hit. Its sheet music, by one estimate, sold more than 20 million copies. It was sung and performed particularly often during the Civil War, and troops used its melody as a marching tune. It remains somewhat of a standard and has been recorded numerous times, especially as a favorite of bluegrass musicians. In the lyrics, the singer is remembering his loved one. She has passed away but he recalls their good life together. They particularly enjoyed the call of the mocking bird, which even now is singing o'er her grave. This arrangement opens in E-flat major with Trumpet 1 introducing the sweetly sad melody, I'm dreaming now of Hally. After the introduction, the tempo picks up to allegro and whirls along. It does slow down several times, and there are four one-measure deviations from the 4/4 time signature: one 6/4, two 2/4s and one 1/4. At measure 65, the key changes to B-flat major for the finale. Trumpets 1 and 2 each play one A-above-their-staff eighth note as their highest pitch; the rest of the music stays well within the normal playing range of the five instruments. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808673).    Brahms composed Ein deutsches Requiem, nach Worten der heiligen Schrift, his longest composition, during the period, 1865-1868. For the libretto, he eschewed the Latin text of the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass, using instead verses he chose from the German-language Luther Bible. Thus, it was A German Requiem. The Roman Church’s Requiem Mass begins with prayers for the dead; Brahms, on the other hand, chose to console the living and framed his first movement around the second of the Beatitudes, Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted. The first movement is, indeed, comforting, filled with warmth and beauty. This arrangement translates Brahms’ choral parts and orchestral accompaniment into a warm and appealing five-brass-instruments version.    This arrangement was completed in 2017, and performance time runs about 10 minutes, 32 seconds.
