Oboe Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1018945 Composed by Benjamin Harry Sajo. 20th Century,Contemporary. Individual part. 1 pages. Benjamin Sajo #6078673. Published by Benjamin Sajo (A0.1018945). Programme Notes: This composition was written to be considered for pairing alongside Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony #3, the Eroica, but can stand on its own virtues as an intense and slow meditation on heroism. The music is like a boiling pot on the stove that’s just began to overflow its bubbles. The first part of the title, kommos, is a Classical Greek term from Attic dramaturgy, literally meaning striking but specifically referring to beating oneself up during lamentation--ripping at the hair, gouging out the eyes--like Oedipus--slapping the forehead, and other acts amid moments of extreme emotional turmoil. For example, from Aeschylus's play Agamemnon, a character bewails: Apollo, Apollo! God of the Ways, my destroyer! For you have destroyed me-and utterly [...]What is this fresh woe [...]what monstrous, monstrous horror, beyond love's enduring, beyond all remedy? And help stands far away! We can easily imagine physical accompaniment to the script; rather than bottling up the pain, the hero lets it all explosively come out.  The second part of the title, When the world moved on, is an epigraph taken from American author Stephen King’s The Dark Tower epic. The primary setting of the novel, a world similar in many ways to our own, is experiencing a dark age where the glorious past is all but a distant memory and all good things are referred to wistfully as occurring, When the world moved on. Yet, the main protagonist, Roland, the last gunslinger, emphasizes that it is not just a figure of speech, but the literal distances between destinations have increased, the positions of the stars have changed, as well as the occurrence of other unnatural phenomena. The world has become a gulf of isolation from all corners. Taken together, this piece is a lamentation for when the world moved on. Truly completed on Yom Kippur during the Covid-19 Pandemic, being unable to fast or go to synagogue, this is my atonement.About the Composer: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

Guitar,Piano,Vocal,Voice - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1377044 Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,21st Century,Chamber,Classical,Contemporary. Score. 61 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #961650. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.1377044). I came across Douglas R. Hofstadter's book Gödel, Escher, Bach when I was a doctoral student at Harvard University, 1977-81. I guess I bought it because I saw the name Bach on its cover. I have to confess however that I was unable to go through it all; the Gödel theorems and others were beyond my elementary knowledge of math and science. Early this summer I accidentally found an article in The Atlantic about a conversation between Sami Al-Suwailem and Professor Hofstadter regarding a question that the former presented to the LLM (large-language-model), ChatGPT: Why Did I Write GEB? NB: GEB is an acronym of Gödel, Escher, Bach. The conversation between them about ChatGPT was hilarious; basically Hofstadter said ChatGPT is ridiculously clumsy and inept. I, on the other hand, immediately thought: wouldn't it be fun to set excerpts of the GEB text in a song cycle for tenor and piano?I wrote to Prof. Hofstadter and he was enthusiastic about my idea of a GEB song cycle and encouraged me to go ahead. After reading through the tome of 700-plus pages (and skimming through the over my head mathematical parts), I came up with eight paragraphs of texts which I set to music.1. A Fugue is ...2. Fishes and Scales ...3. Bach and Cage ...4. The Carroll Dialogue ...5. Crab Canon ...6. The Brain's Ants ...7. Is 15 wondrous, or unwondrous?8. The Origin of Life ...

Violin Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.869285 Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,Baroque,Classical,Contemporary,Romantic Period. 148 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #33805. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869285). Instrumentation: violin solo & orchestra, 2222-4231-timp-hp-strings Program note. I first heard Irina Muresanu, maybe five years ago, with the Boston Trio in Jordan Hall at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. I was impressed from the very first note she played on her violin. Subsequently I heard her in a chamber music duo recital with pianist Ya-fei Chuang at the Harvard-Epworth Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I remember saying to myself, Wow, she has a big, warm sound! One day I would love to write a violin concerto for her! Last year I heard her play the Brahms and the Tchaikovsky violin concerti on separate occasions with the Lexington Symphony and the Boston Classical Orchestra. It was that wow factor again … When I proposed to write a violin concerto for Max Hobart and the Boston Civic Symphony Orchestra, he asked me who I would like to feature as the soloist. I said Irina Muresanu. Max said it was a fabulous choice since he has been thinking of engaging Irina to play with the Civic for some time. Over the past summer I indulged myself in a buying spree of scores and CD recordings of violin concerti. Many composers’ works stood out: concerti by Brahms, Mendelssohn, Sibelius, Stravinsky, Elgar, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Saint-Saëns, Dvorak, Paganini, Glazunov, Dohnanyi, Nielsen, Spohr, etc. And of course, I did not ignore the gems by Bach and Mozart! The listening to and research of all these concerti masterpieces were quite overwhelming, to say the least. So, by the time I was ready to begin work on my Concerto, I had to put all those scores and CDs aside and begin to find the music in my head. I must confess that it took a while. But eventually I found the seed that brought everything together. And within six weeks, between late September and early November, I completed the short score of the concerto. The orchestration took approximately ten days and the complete work was done on November 21st, 2009. My Violin Concerto, opus 129, is in two parts. Each part consists of a slow section that is followed by a fast one. Part I: Largo, Moderato, Allegro ma non troppo. Part II: Largo, Adagio, Prestissimo. Enjoy!! String Quartet String Quartet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.869207 Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,Baroque,Classical,Contemporary,Romantic Period. Score and parts. With Summer: Cloudburst! Double rainbow … Trio 3). 48 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #3905. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869207). Program note: As indicated by the title, this is my twelfth string quartet. My very first work, Aperture (1974), was a string quartet. In between I wrote four (nos. 2 – 5) for the Kronos Quartet, one (no. 6) for the Manhattan String Quartet, one (no. 7) for the Lydian String Quartet, one (no. 8) for the Artaria String Quartet, two (nos. 9 - 10) for the Hawthorne String Quartet, and one (no. 11) for the Formosa Quartet. The number twelve immediately brought to mind the months of the year. But I thought a twelve-movement string quartet might be a bit excessive, and difficult to achieve in a coherent narrative arc. Most classical string quartets by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven are in four movements. So why not the seasons, a movement for each: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. I am a huge fan of The Creation by Franz Joseph Haydn. Confession: I am a huge fan of anything by maestro Haydn. For inspiration and guidance, I went to Haydn’s other oratorio The Seasons. Armed with a Dover publication of the full score and a recording of the complete work by Sir Thomas Beecham on EMI Classics, I got down to work over the summer of 2010. String Quartet No. 12 … The Seasons, after Franz Joseph Haydn is in four movements, played without pause between movements. 1) Intro: Heavy snow … Spring: Crocuses blooming!!! 2) Summer: Cloudburst! Double rainbow … Trio 3) Autumn: La Caccia … Danza Rusticana … Trio 4) Intro: Heavy snow again … Winter: O Magnum Mysterium … Hail storm! The work begins with four descending chords, depicting the falling of snow. But it’s Spring and crocuses are seen peeping through the snow … Summer begins with cloudbursts, thunder, lightning and torrential rain. A double rainbow appears after the storm. The sun emerges from the clouds in the Trio section. It is a lovely day after all; but then the clouds return … La Caccia: men go hunting in the Autumn. Well, the men in Haydn’s days at least. Peasant ladies dance as they harvest in the fields. A hawk appears, soaring overhead in the Trio as the sun sets in an orange-red sky ... In Winter snow falls again; but it’s the season to celebrate the Nativity. Violin and viola chant O magnum mysterium … O Magnum Mysterium O great mystery Et admirabile sacramentum and wonderful sacrament Ut animalia viderent Dominum natum that animals should see the new-born Lord Jacentem in praesepio! lying in a manger! Beata Virgo, cujus viscera Blessed is the Virgin whose womb Meruerunt portare was worthy to bear Dominum Christum. Christ the Lord. Alleluia. Alleluia. A hailstorm wreaks havoc. Fine. Audio link. Full Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.869350 Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,Baroque,Classical,Contemporary,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 82 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #14827. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869350). Instrumentation: trumpet solo and 2222-4231-timp-2perc-strings. Over the years I have written at least ten orchestral works for Max Hobart including three symphonies and four concertos for saxophone, violin, oboe and cello, respectively. So I was thrilled when Max asked me to write a concerto for trumpet virtuoso Stephen Burns and the Boston Civic Symphony Orchestra. I am familiar with Stephen Burns’ work as a piccolo trumpet player doing concertos from the baroque period. The color of his sound was already in my head. Stephen and I got together in the spring of 2104 and we discussed the project in some detail. We immediately agreed that the work would be in three movements. Each movement would feature a different trumpet: the trumpet in C for the first, the flugelhorn for the second and the piccolo for the last. I began work on the concerto at the end of August and finished it three months later. The work as mentioned earlier is in three movements: 1. Heraldic Beast … Allegro. 2. Bossa Nova in 7/4 … Adagio. 3. Perpetuo Moto … Presto! Enjoy!!!

Small Ensemble Clarinet,Flute,Oboe,Piano - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.923701 Composed by Cesar Auguste Franck. Arranged by Robert Fruehwald. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 39 pages. Robert Fruehwald #2165237. Published by Robert Fruehwald (A0.923701). I have a love-hate relationship with the Cesar Franck D Minor Symphony. It was the first large scale romantic work that I played as a member of a youth orchestra. I remember the thrill of being immersed in the overwhelming drama of the work. As I have returned to the piece over the years, I still love it, or rather I love parts of it. It is a very, very long work. It takes a while to get to the point. The point of the piece, to me, is the last movement. It is fast, exciting, maybe even joyous. The long, dark, angst-ridden build-up seemed profound to me as a teenager. I am less patient today. Now I wish Franck had simply started with the last movement. I decided to try rewriting the symphony myself. I would start with material from the last movement. I would use all of the basic musical material of the piece, but I would condense it down to ten to fifteen minutes of music. I had originally intended to leave the romantic character of the work intact. That intention didn't last very long. As I worked on the piece, it very quickly became more post-modern than romantic. I think that's fine. The profundity may be gone, but I think the piece is more fun this way. As I get older the scales of my life are tipping more and more toward fun and less and less toward profundity. It's kind of nice that, as I age, I see more fun ahead me even if that means I'm seeing profundity recede in the rear-view mirror.

Thomas Oboe Lee #15879. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869356). Instrumentation: 1 flute, 1 oboe, 1 English horn, 2 bassoons, 2 French horns, timpani and strings.Program note: In the year 2010, my wife Kristin Beckwith and I went to Paris twice, the first time in May and the second time in December right after Christmas. The weather was magnificent in May. Our friends Seph and Roger met us there. Being long-time veterans of Paris, they took us all over the city: Le Marais, the Left Bank, Montmartre, Sacré Coeur, Père LaChaise cemetery, Avenue des Champs-Élysées, Jardin du Luxembourg, Jardin des Tuileries, Notre Dame cathedral, Eiffel Tower, the flea market at Porte de Clignancourt, the canal at Saint Martin, etc. Since the weather was so great we basically stayed outside the entire two weeks. My wife Kris said that we had to return next again to Paris to go inside the museums. So we did. The weather in Paris after Christmas was very damp and chilly. So we did indoor activities: Le Louvre, Musée D’Orsay, Palais Garnier, etc. We even attended a beautiful performance of Swan Lake by the Paris Opera Ballet at L’Opéra Bastille. I should also mention that on both occasions I met up with a former student of mine from Berklee, Joe Makholm. He makes a living in Paris playing jazz piano. Joe got us a gig at the Swan Bar in Montparnasse. On the first occasion we did it as a trio with a French bass player. I played flute. On the second occasion, we did it as a duo. Playing jazz in Paris? You can’t beat that!!! Early this year, Steven Lipsitt and I had a chat about my writing a new work for the Boston Classical Orchestra. My last work for the BCO was a piano concerto with Robert Levin as soloist. I told Steven that this time I wanted to write a symphony. He said, Sure. Go ahead. I told him it would be about Paris. He said he would put Mozart’s Paris Symphony on the same program. I said, Fabulous! Symphony No. 8 … City of Light (2011) is in five movements. 1. La Seine Presto, Moderato 2. Basilique du Sacré-Coeur Largo 3. Palais Garnier Allegro, Trio 4. Avenue des Champs-Élysées Allegro 5. Musée du Louvre Largo, Moderato This work is dedicated to my wife and muse, Kristin Beckwith. Woodwind Ensemble Bassoon,Oboe - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.844680 Composed by Jeno Hubay. Arranged by Phil Beaman. Romantic Period,Standards. 17 pages. Phil Beaman #5017171. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844680). Maggiolata is the Italian name of an ancient Spring Festival celebrated on May 1st, hence the subtitle Song of May. Jeno Hubay, Head of the Violin Dept at the Budapest Academy of Music, wrote this piece to be as light and celebratory as a perfect spring day. My arrangement abridges and slightly simplifies this classical standard which was originally written for Viola and Piano. I reduced it from 6 1/2 minutes to 2 1/2 minutes by focusing on the recapitulation of the main theme but also included opening and closing cadenzas. I have scored it for a Double Reed Octet; 1 Oboe solo, accompanied by 4 Oboe parts and 3 Bassoon parts. The Soloist has the melody throughout. The other Oboes and Bassoon 1,2 have occasional countermelody, but mostly pulse ensemble rich chords while the Bassoon 3 sits on pedal tones. Overall, it creates a rich, balanced double reed sound which utilizes the full range of the instrument. Fairly easy, but sounds more advanced with its full chords and the dramatic interpretation markings I have added.

The other Oboes, English Horns and Bassoons have occasional countermelody, but mostly pulse ensemble rich chords while the ContraBassoon sits on pedal tones. Overall, it creates a rich, balanced Double Reed ensemble sound which utilizes the full range of the instrument. Fairly easy, but sounds more advanced with its range, full chords and the dramatic interpretation markings I have added.9 page score, 1 page parts; 17 pages total5 minutes with repeat

Instrumental Duet Instrumental Duet,Multi-Percussion,Oboe - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.816703 Composed by Guy Bunce. Contemporary. Score and parts. 11 pages. Enigma Music #4984881. Published by Enigma Music (A0.816703). Entrainment (2009)Written for New NoiseOboe & PercussionEntrainment is the process by which two oscillating systems, which have different periods when they function independently, assume the same period when interacting. The principle of entrainment is universal, appearing in chemistry, pharmacology, biology, medicine, psychology, sociology, astronomy, architecture to name but a few. This piece explores the entrainment of tempo with two initially diverse tempo structures synchronising after a period of four minutes. At the start of the score the oboe begins at 137 bpm and the percussionist at 63 bpm. Over the course of the four minutes the percussionist speeds up whilst the oboist slows down resulting in the tempi synchronising at four minutes. After four minutes the two instruments begin a discourse in unison (rhythmically, melodically, and dynamically): the musical equivalent of total synchronisation. In the final section of the piece the parts diverge with the percussionist slowing down and the oboe part maintaining its speed. As with many of my pieces, the starting point for Entrainment was an external source, in this case the song Time by Pink Floyd. The rhythmic lines throughout Entrainment are based on the rhythm to the bass line of the first part of Time. This can be clearly seen in the opening in which the oboe part employs this rhythm.Harmonically Entrainment consists of a series of key centres whose period is determined by points within the four minutes where either of the two independent parts briefly synchronise at the semiquaver level with the unit of a second. At each of these points (which become more frequent as the piece progresses), the harmonic centre changes. The harmonic centres relate directly to the chord structure of Pink Floyd's Time: at each point where either part synchronises with seconds the harmonic centre in both parts moves one chord through Time's chord sequence. At 2' 19'' the percussion and oboe part synchronise (albeit briefly) for the first time. This event was used to mark the start of more polytonal harmony as both instruments from this point forward begin their own cycles through the Time chords. Throughout the piece, points of synchronisation are highlighted musically.Performance mp3 recordings that contain a dual click track for the first four minutes of the piece can be obtained by contacting guybunce@hotmail.com. The click track is arranged so that the oboe click is on the left channel and the percussion click is on the right. An alternative click track (track 3) is also provided using a different sound (a beep). The performers should wear the headphone in one ear which corresponds to the track of their part. The dual click track can then be played on a single CD player (or mp3 player) with the output going to both sets of headphones using a headphone splitter or other device. Alternatively, files can be put on either two iPods or Mp3 players. The players will then have to synchronize the beginnings of each track. It is possible to play the piece without the use of the click track(s). If this is the case, performers should use the metronome markings and general layout of the score to aid performance. It is advisable that one player (possibly the oboist) sets the tempo and tempo changes, and the other player follows. It was not always possible to represent accurately the relationship between the two parts in the score. Arrows have been added on the score to show points of synchronisation where the score layout differs.

Concert Band - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.818351 By Stephen R Dalrymple. By American Folk Song. Arranged by Stephen R Dalrymple. Folk. Score and parts. 52 pages. Stephen R Dalrymple #6381291. Published by Stephen R Dalrymple (A0.818351). Shenandoah ♫ traditional American folk song ♫ arranged for concert band by Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ The meaning of this song will be long debated. Considered a sea chanty, the song was passed on orally by singers on clipper ships. The variations in lyrics that have been collected demonstrate how various singers over the decades have altered the song (consciously or unconsciously). ♫ This arrangement is based on lyrics that were collected prior to 1860 and published in Sea Songs and Shanties by W. B. Whall (1910). There are evidently 2 rivers mentioned in this song, the Shenandoah and the Missouri. The song tells a love story between an impetuous trader and a Shenandoah Valley Native American princess. As the trader heads for the Missouri River, he looks back longingly to the home of the princess. ♫ I have used the Dorian Mode to suggest Native American elements in the story line. The YouTube video features photos of both the Shenandoah River and the Missouri River. ♫ The white man loved the Indian maiden, Away you rolling river. With notions his canoe was laden. Ah-ha, I'm bound away, Cross the wide Missouri. ♫ O, Shenandoah, I love your daughter, Away you rolling river. I'll take her 'cross yon rolling water. Ah-ha, I'm bound away, Cross the wide Missouri. ♫ The chief disdained the trader's dollars: Away you rolling river. My daughter never you shall follow. Ah-ha, I'm bound away, Cross the wide Missouri. ♫ O, Shenandoah, I long to hear you, Away you rolling river. Across that wide and rolling river. Ah-ha, I'm bound away, 'Cross the wide Missouri. ♫ arrangement © 2000 Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ recording ℗ 2021 Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ presentation © 2021 Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ sequenced by the arranger ♫ Purchase price includes permission to make photocopies of parts and additional scores for a medium size school band. ♫ This .pdf file includes 1) Condensed Conductor’s Score 2) Individual parts for: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet 1, Clarinet 2, optional Clarinet 3, Bass Clarinet, Alto Sax /Alto Clarinet, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, Trumpet 1, Trumpet 2, French Horn, Trombone/Baritone/Bassoon, Treble Clef Baritone, Tuba, E Bass, Snare Drum/Cymbals, Shaker/Chimes, and Timpani ♫ The YouTube video contains a full recording.
