A Fugal Overture was written in 1922 by Gustav Holst. It was first performed at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden on 14 May 1923 and was used as an opening work to Holst’s one-act opera The Perfect Fool. It received its concert premiere on 11 October 1923 at one of Henry Wood’s Queen’s Hall Promenade Concerts. It is an early example of neoclassicism and was influenced by the counterpoint of J. S. Bach, despite its unconventional use of the fugal process.Holst began writing the piece in the summer of 1922, having hoped to develop it into a ballet. It is divided into three sections, the fugal subject with its distinct 3+3+2 pattern, a slower section with solos at the end, and a third section where the subject returns.Although reviews of the piece were mixed at the time of its premiere, the likes of Adrian Boult have said it was “an invigorating work that could effectively start any […] concert. In more recent years, it has been compared to John Adam’s A Short Ride in a Fast Machine.This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. Written in four short movements, the opening Pastorale conveys the beauty and serenity of the grounds. Fanfare announces an exciting concert prelude. Promenade is a short spirited march which leads to the majestic Finale which is thematically linked to the opening motives.

Published by Clive Longhurst (A0.918665). This arrangement is a re-orchestration of a British brass band contest piece, commisioned for the 1970, 2nd Section,W.D. & H. O. Wills Final test piece. A particularly musical (unlike a lot of more recent contest pieces), yet subtly testing piece for most sections of the band. I have included a page (page 35) with useful printing instructions.I hope I have done it justice as it is my personal favourite contest piece. The pieces used in this medley are all of a stately or majestic style and include in order: Promenade from Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky Jupiter from The Planets by Holst Finale from Symphony No. 1 by Brahms Academic Festival Overture by Brahms The Great Great of Kiev from Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky The arrangement is flexible: The cello part in Jupiter is for advanced players and is in tenor clef. The player has a choice between a clean part, a part with suggested fingerings, or a simplified part which substitutes the bass part in the Jupiter section. Because there are no elaborate transitions or cadences connecting the pieces, selections may be omitted to suit individual situations without compromising musical integrity.
