Claude Debussy’s two sets of Préludes for piano have always been among my favorites and I have selected these three from Livre 1 because they work well on low instruments. The first and third preludes can be played on four bassoons, but the second requires the fourth player to switch to contrabassoon, although an alternative bassoon part is included. If you are unfamiliar with the Préludes, I suggest you listen to some recordings first to get an idea of what these pieces are all about. You can then perhaps introduce your own ideas. Debussy specified the very slow tempo for Footprints…, but the other tempos are just my suggestions. Likewise, the translations of the less familiar French terms are mine, and you may wish to rethink them.

Nature and innocence demand a spontaneous and laidback approach to those delicate and poetic riffs to match the colour and aroma of fragrant purple shrubs. Birds may be heard calling, accompanied by the distant refrain of a shepherd’s flute in this harmonious and homogeneous prelude — an admirable contrast to numbers IV and VI.In direct connection with this prelude, Marguerite Long mentions a Debussy souvenir pairing the scent of sea mist and coastal pines, and if she is correct this would take us to Arcachon in south west France. It is possible that the young composer first went there in 1880 with the baroness Nadejda Von Meck and later in 1904 when he stayed with the uncle of Emma Bardac (neÌe Moyse), his future bride.The pastoral and familiar poetry of a woodland scene where the earth’s pervasive scent mingles with the subdued display of patches in purple.— CortotA peaceful melody on a shepherd's pipe, resonating on the silent moorland. Claude Debussy’s two sets of Préludes for piano have always been among my favorites and I have selected these three from Livre 1 because they work well on low instruments. If you are unfamiliar with the Préludes, I suggest you listen to some recordings first to get an idea of what these pieces are all about. You can then perhaps introduce your own ideas. Debussy specified the very slow tempo for Footprints…, but the other tempos are just my suggestions. Likewise, the translations of the less familiar French terms are mine, and you may wish to rethink them. These pieces will really test your quartet’s ability to play together.The score is in bass clef, but alternative treble clef parts are included.

Unlike some notable collections of preludes from prior times, such as Chopin's Op. 28 preludes, or the preludes from Johann Sebastian Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier, Debussy's do not follow a strict pattern of tonal centres. The prelude's title refers to the protagonist of Charles Dickens' The Pickwick Papers – P.P.M.P.C. stands for Perpetual President Member of the Pickwick Club. The piece is characteristic for its eccentric shifts in expression and often melancholy or sentimental tone. It is also notable for incorporating the opening refrain from God Save the Queen. A performance lasts approximately two and a half minutes.

Here is an excellent description of the 24 Lyric Preludes for Trumpet and Piano by the composer, David Evan Thomas:24 Lyric Preludes for Trumpet and Piano is a unified cycle of 24 contrasting pieces in all major and minor keys and may be played in sequence, by book, or excerpted in any order that makes musical sense. As in Chopin's 24 Préludes for piano, each major key is paired with its relative minor. But the 24 Lyric Preludes move softly down a descending ladder of thirds and flat-wise around the circle of fifths. Many aspects of the trumpeter's stock-in-trade are explored-double-tonguing, lip slurs, extremes of range and volume-as well as references to rhythms, patterns, and problems encountered by the orchestral player. The tonal spectrum may be widened further through judicious use of cornet and flugelhorn and creative choice of mutes. While there are a few notable links between movements (e.g., the Improvisation to the Nocturne; the return of the Prelude tune in the Finale), each piece deals with a characteristic style or musical idea, and most stand on their own. The first one, Kindertodtenlieder for soprano and piano, I started on April 26 and it was completed on May 13th. While exercising at home, I was watching on YouTube Debussy’s Préludes Book 1 and 2, and the idea came to me that I should try my hand at writing something that is impressionistic. Why not? So I started my own set of preludes using the Debussy as my model. Each movement will take two or three notes from the original Debussy version and then I would divert and go in a complete different direction, following my gut instinct.
