An old-fashioned dance style, the passacaglia or sometimes chaconne, was a slow and stately 3-in-a-measure dance, usually based on a repeating bass line or ground. This modern version uses the principle of a ground bass with 'divisions' - ever more divided notes - forming intricate curlicues as the music progresses.Scored for string quintet and intended to be played by one or two to a part, the beautiful melodies over the solid bass give this piece the air of an older and more elegant time. Great to programme alongside real Baroque music, or as a feature in a concert around dance music.

This is one of a suite of organ pieces composed by David W Solomons performed by David Carlston Williams for a CD in June 2015 The suggested order for this suite is: 1. Passacaglia: based on an ostinato passage in 3 time. The idea behind the passacaglia relates to the origin of the word, it is basically a gentle stroll down the street (pasar la calle in Spanish, which was converted into Passacaglia in Italian) 2. Dorina: a descriptive piece in Dorian mode based on a song about a cat, from the aptly named village of Chattevoix, who stalks, but never catches, a little bird. 3. Playtime: also about a cat, the composer's own cat who is playful and rushes around the house but occasionally stopping to pummel the soft furnishings. 4. Early Evening in Camden Town: a more serious and sad piece - in 3-3-2 time. It is an evocation of the poor folk in Camden and their dreams of what could be, if only….. It was originally a song, which the composer wrote when he was living in London, based on a poem by fellow Londoner Sandra Erös The streets are part of a toy town, waiting to be played with…. 5. The Bishop's Dance: a curious and comical piece in 11 time (3, 3, 3, 2). It comes from the legend of Robin Hood, in which Robin meets the bishop of Hereford, who had hoped to get the better of him, but Robin prevails and forces him to dance. The clumsy attempts of the ungainly Bishop to obey Robin's commands cause great merriment among the merry men To quote our vicar, Rev Barbara, after the recital For me music paints a picture, and, for that, I have got this picture of someone going for a stroll in their village and then they came across a very old cat wandering down the street imaging it could catch birds but never catching them. And then it would lie down for a sleep and dream of the days when it was a kitten.... It was a very reflective programme and turns our mind about What for the Autumn, what do we need to do next.. it really did fit in with the mood of the year, as we turn towards building up the programme for next year... So thank you, it gave us time to reflect in a very beautiful manner.... (7 pages. 3 pages of music)This Passacaglia is the first of a four-movement sonata composed in 2018. Publication of the entire sonata is forthcoming, but the Passacaglia is offered here as a single, standalone work. I have performed the Passacaglia in my own concert programs both on its own and as part of the larger sonata. I believe that it works equally well both ways. The Passacaglia form originated in 17th-century Spain. It started as a series of strummed chords that served as an interlude between dances. The term itself translates as street song. Over time, it evolved to become a series of variations set over an ostinato or ground bass, usually in triple meter. It is often indistinguishable from a Chaconne. In character, the Passacaglia is often serious, or even grave. The Passacaglia offered here adheres to this tradition in most ways, except that it is in 5/4 instead of triple meter. The ostinato phrase is five measures long and set in quarter notes. Variations usually occur in pairs and are distinguished by texture. Beginning simply, the variations build in complexity throughout the piece. The main theme, introduced in the second pair of variations, recurs later in a fuller texture. One final statement of the ostinato in bare octaves ends the piece. The tonality stems from an E harmonic minor scale, although an added B flat serves to blur any sense of strict tonality.Please note that there are some minor differences between the score and the YouTube video of a live performance from 2018.

The chaconne has evolved from a quick dance song in Spanish culture to a significant musical form. Initially, it was a dance accompaniment, often with somewhat bawdy lyrics, and was characterized by a repeated harmonic progression. Over time, it transitioned into an instrumental form in slow triple time, built on a recurring harmonic pattern or a repeated bass line called a ground. The chaconne's spread in Europe through guitar music and theater further transformed the genre, and it became prevalent during the Baroque era, with many chaconnes existing from the 17th and 18th centuries. In more recent times, the chaconne, like the passacaglia, need not be in 3/4 time, showcasing its continued evolution and adaptability.

Carillon regardless (title suggested by my Dad!) is a set of three pieces for carillon written especially for the Carillon in Loughborough (UK) The pieces (available separately or as one download) are: Bell Dance: a jolly number using a 3 - 3 - 2 rhythm with a melody which is also used for my song It was a lover and his lass Sunday in the park: based on a poem (by my Dad) about the park surrounding the carillon on a hot Sunday Passacaglia: simply a walk down the street (pasar la calle) - this piece also exists as a piece for organ and for flute and guitar The sound samples are electronic previews.
