Practice suggestion:  begin at a slow steady pace, around 60 bpm, and work up to 90 bpm. For school, church, or civic organizations. My friend Maestro had two suggestions for arranging handbells for beginners:  use a familiar melody with the lyrics included (this helps beginning musicians follow along) AND make sure all rhythms follow that melody (there are no extra passing tones to throw players off the beat). I always follow Maestro's musical advice. His fashion advice, not so much!  Key of A, two pages, 1:00 minute performance time.

In the ternary form second movement (Requiescat), funereal bells toll and peal in cycles of textural thickening and thinning. Warren Hatch, written during his undergraduate study at Campbell University. Each movement is distinct, in that each of them is composed in a different form, utilizes different key changes and scales, and takes influence from a different period in classical music. While there is no theme that connects them to one another, they are all in the key of E Major and consist mostly of a waltz-like feeling. III. A Reflection of Passing depicts the shifting aspects about death as a person matures. It’s a piece that came from a time of great loss and much grieving. It begins with an innocent, hopeful understanding of death, followed by a major tone shift, where there is an odd utilization of the piano: the performer sings into the piano while holding down the sustain pedal, which vibrates certain overtones, producing what sounds like a distant choir. The piece closes with a triumphant, hopeful melody, borrowed from a song written by S. Warren Hatch when he was in high school.Composer Notes- Be sure to ensure that the stage hands lift the piano lid before the sonata’s start, as the strings will need to be exposed in order for you to sing into the piano’s body during A Reflection of Passing. For that section (page 22) you will need to face and sing directly into the strings while holding down the sustain pedal for the entire page. If you are playing with the sheet music (don’t worry, I’m not shaming you) simply slide the music holder in order to expose the part of the strings that are closest to you. For this sonata, I encourage you to find your own voice in these pieces. Your own interpretation should align with how you most relate to the message/story they’re telling. This could be using the una corda (leftmost) pedal during lighter sections to further differentiate them, or having a heavier rubato to strengthen the impact of certain phrases. As long as you bring these pieces to life, then it has my stamp of approval.

Throughout all of life’s trials, hope gives us the strength to rebuild and confidently reinvent our circumstances. Rays of Hope is an original piece for handbells that depicts the remnants of a storm that has passed, and then begins to hint at the light that is coming to bring us a new day. The opening illustrates the passing unrest and gives way to a bouncy theme that conjures imagery of dancing light. A thoughtful middle section reminds the listener that uncluttered days are never a given or soon forgotten. But, hope does return with the theme to round out the ending of the piece. The third song, Colloque sentimental, was written in 2003 for Alison Smart and Katharine Durran’s New French Song project. It was as a result of having written one short song to words by Verlaine that I subsequently decided to set two further poems to make a group of three. All three were also set by Debussy: L’ombre des arbres and Chevaux de bois appear in Ariettes Oubliées, while Colloque sentimental belongs to Debussy’s second set of Fêtes Galantes. The poems I have grouped together are linked by the idea of three different landscapes. In the first, Verlaine precedes the words of his own sad, pale landscape with words from Cyrano de Bergerac about a nightingale who fears himself about to fall into a river and drown. In the second poem the landscape has been occupied by a fairground where men, women and children watch as the hobby-horses go round and round before night falls and the church tolls a passing-bell. The third poem takes us into an old park where two ghosts recall their past. The one wonders if the other remembers the happy days of their past lives, but the other doesn’t want to remember, barely acknowledging the closeness they once shared, seeing only that ‘hope has fled, defeated, towards the dark sky.’ I am very grateful to Roger Nichols and Dominique Mols for their advice with the setting of the French texts and with the translations. John Casken Colloque sentimental was first performed by Alison Smart and Katherine Durran at the Purcell Room in London on 13 July 2004.

While most of us no longer live within earshot of bells, many will find a catchy and simple melody still wakes us up in the morning, reminds us to go to that meeting we forgot about, or even just helps us to do day-to-day tasks. As an avid alarm-user myself, I find music assisting me with punctuality just as it has for my ancestors. I wanted to create a piece commemorating this bond between music and time, inspired by both traditional carillon melodies, as well as modern day ringtones. My piece Musical Clock contains movements for both beginners and intermediate players. Each movement may be played individually, but any two or more movements should be played sequentially. ~Adam Lenhart, 2024This composition was first premiered by carillonist Adam Lenhart at the 53 bell Charles Baird Carillon in Ann Arbor, Michigan.------------------------Adam Lenhart (b. 2002) is a University of Michigan student of music theory, composition, voice and organ from Ottawa Lake, Michigan. As a theorist, his areas of study vary widely, including 18th century counterpoint, the early American Sacred Harp tradition and impressionism. As a composer, his music draws inspiration from nature, mathematics and poetry. In 2020 he was awarded the Michigan Music Education Associations Young Composers of Michigan award, as well as first prize in the University of Toledo Young Composers competition. Lenhart has also participated in numerous ensembles across Michigan, including the MYAF All-State Choir, Tecumseh Pops Orchestra, University of Michigan Mens Glee Club and the SMTD University Choir. He thoroughly enjoys collaboration with other composers, performers, poets and visual artists. Some of his recent projects include collaborations with individuals from the University of Michigan Chamber Music, History, and Poetry departments.

Additionally, the movements can be presented in any order, although the most common order is indicated in the score. FLEXIBLE INSTRUMENTATION: The Galvitone are tuned pipes Clocks created for their ensemble. A combination of glockenspiel and crotales can be used in place of this instrument. The Aquarion is a glass marimba built for this piece. Another instrument, such as the MalletKAT, keyboard, or combination of marimba and vibraphone can be used in instead. Of Make and Movement was commissioned by the Clocks in Motion percussion quartet. This is the first percussion quartet I wrote for them as their resident Clock Shop composer. Growing up surrounded by many antique clocks in my childhood home, I was inspired to create a piece that, for me, encapsulates some of the ways these clocks show the passing of time: the swinging of a pendulum, aging crystals in a quartz clock, and how the continuous movement of the hands could represent how we are in this continuous dance with time.

It combines many of the subjects that fascinate me: the relationship of text narrative and musical narrative, the history of opera, early cinema, the theatrical practices of the nineteenth century, along with the folk and popular music of the Alpine region. A girl (the soprano), stranded on top of an un-climbable mountain peak as a young baby, is taught to sing by the mountain animals. Young Bobli lives in the village far below the un-climbable peak. He was born mute and communicates with the world by playing the trumpet. Bobli hears the soprano's song drifting down into the valley. The soprano listens to Bobli's trumpet tunes blown up to her by the wind. They are both enchanted. The three acts are separated by interludes describing how three animals experience time passing in relation to a musical tempo. Like any self respecting melodrama the text and music combine to depict or imply a wide ranging theatrical adventure, in this piece starting at the Creation (or the big bang), a lonely existence, scenes of rustic village life, some carpentry, many mountain goats, unrequited love, and ending in a quest destined to fail. In a live performance the text [provided with the performance material] is to be projected on a screen behind the musicians in the style of silent movie intertitles.
