The exact authorship of the carol is unknown. The song is associated with the tradition of wassailing, which involves going door-to-door singing in exchange for food and drink. This practice predates Christianity and was part of mid-winter celebrations. The term wassail originates from the Anglo-Saxon greeting waes hael, meaning be in good health. This greeting evolved into a toast, with one person saying was hail and another responding drinc hail while passing around a communal bowl of a drink made from mulled ale or mead, spices, and apples, known as wassail. Wassailing has two primary forms: one that occurs post-Christmas, often associated with Twelfth Night, and another that takes place before Christmas. The latter involves singing carols and sharing wassail from a bowl. At the same time, the former includes rituals to encourage fertility in orchards, such as singing to trees and offering cider-soaked toast. The carol Here We Come A-Wassailing has several variations, including Here We Come A-Caroling and Here We Come A-Christmasing, each with different lyrics but similar themes of merriment and well-wishing for the New Year.

Published by Greg Woodward (A0.1460359). My third string quartet is a playful and melodic work, encompassing a wide range of styles and moods with a high degree of thematic unity. The joyful, dance-like character of the opening eventually disintegrates into a moment of sorrow, before a pensive, introspective section with elements of Herrmann and Shostakovich. A grand crescendo leads to a huge A major chord (a reference to the Beatles' A Day In The Life) that gradually becomes more dissonant as it progresses underneath a constant high A pedal point in the first violin. A chant-like section featuring open fifths follows, before a driving, angular section in 5/4. This recurs a few times interspersed with some musical episodes before ushering in a majestic transformation of the earlier chant-like section. After this runs its course and dies out, a final section revisits the dance-like energy of the first section which borrows thematic material from all through the piece before speeding into a final jazzy major sixth pizzacato chord.This would make a good concert piece.Visit my YouTube page for more performances, arrangements and compositions.

Published by Hyrum Kohler (A0.1228636). I wanted to play a hymn in church without simply playing the same thing three times in a row. And, without words, I wanted to express the tension and pain that occasionally and inevitably accompanies trying one's best to live a good life. This arrangement is simultaneously fresh, familiar, and reasonably challenging for the performer. This is my go-to for playing in a church setting, but it can also fit right in to a pedagogical or classical recital scenario. The traditional tune wears different clothes throughout the piece, having variance in time signature, key signature, and mode (dipping into minor). This is a simplification and compression of my original arrangment for string quartet. I originally intended this to be for viola, but it just so happened to fit in the violin's range; I left the part in treble clef to accommodate both options. The piano part is somewhat easier to play than the violin/viola part (evidenced by how I can kind of play it), but it still serves a collaborative or duet role, sharing and passing the melody betwen parts.

A great arrangement for your next performance, sure to be a big hit with your audience!Its original title was Tico-Tico no farelo (sparrow in the bran), but since Brazilian guitarist Américo Jacomino Canhoto (1889–1928) had a work with the same title, Abreu's work was given its present name in 1931, and sometime afterward Aloysio de Oliveira wrote the original Portuguese lyrics.Eros Volusia and her dancers dance to Tico-Tico in 1942 Rio Rita. Ethel Smith performed Tico-Tico onscreen in Bathing Beauty (1944). Carmen Miranda performed Tico-Tico onscreen in Copacabana (1947); It was also featured in the Aquarela do Brasil segment of the Walt Disney film Saludos Amigos (1942) and in Woody Allen's Radio Days (1987).In Quebec the song has been used for several decades in commercials for Sico paint.In season three of Mama's Family episode An Ill Wind, an intoxicated Iola briefly sings the song's chorus before passing out onto a bed.This song can be heard on various episodes of the Belgian Kabouter Wesley cartoon.In season one of Narcos: Mexico, episode 3 (El Padrino), the orchestral version of the song is played by a band during a reception. New Zealand-based music teacher and folk music compiler Neil Colquhoun claimed to have collected the song around 1966 from one F. R. Woods. Woods, who was in his 80s at the time, had allegedly heard the song from his uncle. it was attributed to one D.H. Rogers. It has been speculated that Rogers was the uncle of Woods and that Rogers had worked as a teenage pirate or shore whaler in the early-to-mid 19th century, composing this and another song in his later years and eventually passing them on to his nephew as an old man. Nathan Evers recorded the work in 2021 during the COVID pandemic and it became a viral sensation with house-bound Tik-Tokers sparking a whole re-introduction of sea shanties in what was termed Shanty-Tok. This string quartet arrangement gives all instruments a chance at the melody, and adds the affectation of a foot-stomp and a shout at the ends of verses. The history of whaling in New Zealand stretches from the late eighteenth century to 1965. In 1831, the British-born Weller brothers Edward, George, and Joseph, who had emigrated to Sydney in 1829, founded a whaling station at Otakou near modern Dunedin in the South Island of New Zealand, seventeen years before Dunedin was established. The Weller brothers had on their voyage to New Zealand brought in the 'Lucy Ann' (the Weller brothers' barque) a good deal of rum and a good deal of gunpowder. From 1833, the Weller brothers sold provisions to whalers in New Zealand from their base at Otakou, which they had named Otago in approximation of the local MÄori pronunciation. The song's lyrics describe a whaling ship called the Billy o' Tea [Note: a billy is a pot in which water is boiled to make tea or coffee] and its hunt for a right whale. The song describes how the ship's crew hope for a wellerman to arrive and bring them supplies of luxuries. According to the song's listing on the website New Zealandfolk Song, the workers at these bay-whaling stations (shore whalers) were not paid wages, they were paid in slops (ready made clothing), spirits and tobacco. The chorus continues with the crew singing of their confidence that the tonguin' will be the last step of their plight. Tonguing in this context refers to the practice of cutting strips of whale blubber to render into oil. Subsequent verses detail the captain's determination to bring in the whale in question, even as time passes and the quartet of whaling boats is lost in the fight. In the last verse, the narrator conveys how the Billy o' Tea is still considered locked in an ongoing struggle with the whale, with the wellerman making his regular call to strengthen the captain and crew. It was written in the Turkish style popular in music of the time.The theme was first used in Beethoven's Six Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 76, of 1808. In 1811, Beethoven wrote an overture and incidental music to a play by August von Kotzebue called The Ruins of Athens (Op. 113), which premiered in Pest in 1812. The Turkish March appears as movement four of the incidental music. Many music lovers associate the theme with The Ruins of Athens, although that was not its original appearance.The march is in Bâ™ major, tempo vivace and 2/4 time. Its dynamic scheme is highly suggestive of a procession passing by, starting out pianissimo, poco a poco rising to a fortissimo climax and then receding back to pianissimo by the coda.
