The ending is a funeral song, which I included to show my sympathy for these Indigenous communities and the dreadful treatment they suffer. About 10 minutes.

Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1359972). “Lord Jesus, Think on Me†is a translation and free paraphrase of a 5th-century poem by Synesius of Cyrene (ca. 375-414), Bishop of Ptolemais in north Africa and contemporary of Augustine, Bishop of Hippo (354-430). Synesius was a public servant and statesman, a neo-Platonic philosopher and poet. In 410, he was popularly chosen as Bishop of Ptolemais, a position he reluctantly accepted, as his views on certain beliefs of the church, including the soul's creation, a literal resurrection, and the end of the world (eschatos) were unorthodox. In the last of 10 odes Synesius authored, he describes himself bowing humbly in the presence of Christ. In the 1930s, a literal prose translation of the ode was made by the Anglican cleric Harold Costley-White:Be mindful, Christ Son of Godwho rules on high, of thy servant,sinful of heart, who wrote these words.And grant to me release from passions breeding death,which are inborn in my unclean soul.But give me to behold, Saviour Jesus,thy divine brightness, wherein appearingI shall sing a song,to the healer of souls,to the healer of limbs,with the great Fatherand the Holy Spirit.Amen. The text of this setting for SATB voices and organ selects verses from a free paraphrase of that ode, crafted by the Anglican priest and scholar, Allen William Chatfield (1808-1896) and published in his Songs and Hymns of Earliest Greek Christian Poets (1876):Lord Jesus, think on me and purge away my sin; from earthborn passions set me free, and make me pure within. Lord Jesus, think on me, nor let me go astray; through dark-ness and perplexity point Thou the heav'nly way.Lord Jesus, think on me amid the battle's strife; in all my pain and misery be Thou my Health and Life.Lord Jesus, think on me with many a care oppressed; let me Thy loving servant be and taste Thy promised rest.Lord Jesus, think on me that I may sing above to Fa-ther, Spirit, and to Thee the strains of praise and love.The incipit of each verse, “Lord Jesus, think on [remember] me, recalls the words of the penitent thief to Jesus at their crucifixion, and the petitions for guidance, forgiveness, and succor make this a fitting anthem for the penitential season of Lent. ©Copyright 2024 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). Text by Metastasio.This cantata, composed in 1780, is the third in a set of four secular cantatas appearing between 1778 and 1780. Composed in Stockhom, this cantata was written for Lovisa Augusti, lead singer of the Stockholm Royal Theatre of which Kraus was Kapellmaster. No dedication is evidenced in the source material for this edition, the 1801 copy by Frederik Samuel Silverstolpe. Set to a text by Metastasio, Kraus imaginatively explores the musical rendition of the passions of jealousy and madness. Kraus' mastery of musical and literary composition is united here in a brilliant and elevated work of musical drama.

This very famous mexican folk song arrangement is for band with sets of parts (Bb trumpet, bass guitar, el. guitar. drumset).La Adelita is one of the most famous corridos of the Mexican Revolution. Over the years, it has had many adaptations. The ballad was inspired by a Chihuahuense woman who joined the Maderista movement in the early stages of the revolution and fell in love with Madero. She became a popular icon and a symbol of the role of women in the Mexican Revolution. The figure of the adelita gradually became synonymous with the term soldadera, the woman in a military-support (and sometimes fighting) role, who became a vital force in the revolutionary efforts through provisioning, espionage, and other activities in the battles against Mexican federal government forces.[1] However, the song, the portrait, and the role of its subject have been given different, often conflicting, interpretations. It has also been argued that 'La Adelita' expressed the sensitivity and vulnerability of men, emphasizing the stoicism of the rebellious male soldier as he confronts the prospect of death.[2] In another interpretation, the feminist scholar MarÃa Herrara-Sobek argues, Adelita's bravery and revolutionary spirit are lost to the fatalism and insecurities of male soldiers who are focused on passions, love, and desire as they face combat.[2]

English • German • French.The oratorio 'A Child of Our Time' was Tippett’s artistic and emotional response to the events that led to the 'Kristallnacht' pogrom of November 1938. For his oratorio Tippett used as his formal and historical models the Bach Passions and Handel’s Messiah which share with this contemporary morality the subject of the death of an individual set against the universal background of human suffering. Tippett’s use of the spiritual as a contemporary equivalent for the Lutheran chorale of the Bach settings draws his audience more closely into the drama through the spirituals’ ‘unique verbal and musical metaphor’. By 1941, when Tippett had completed the composition of his oratorio, the practicalities of staging a performance during wartime were difficult to say the least. It was, however, through the direct agency of his lifelong friends and professional colleagues, Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears, that the work was first performed in London on 19 March 1944 under the direction of the former Schoenberg pupil Walter Goehr, and with Pears himself as the tenor soloist.

Published by Ali Hanna (A0.1264319). I wrote this piece as an epilogue (pun definitely intended) to a traumatic religious event that took place in February 2023. I won't go into details so I don't risk triggering anyone, but let's just say it was a lot. This is also the first piece I've written where the text isn't my own because my composition professor at the time challenged me to do so.The text of the first half of the piece comes from Mark Twain's poem Warm Summer Sun. It's intended to be an acceptance of the fact that the singer isn't the same person they once were. As the poem repeats, the singer begins to say goodbye to their old self and lay them to rest.The text of the second half of the piece comes from Madison Julius Cawein's poem Take Heart. I see this part as someone in the singer's life giving them hope to keep on living, and who that entity is can be interpreted in a number of ways. For me, it was the friends and professors around me that helped me keep going. I didn't talk to many people about what happened, but just seeing everyone's faces every day taught me that if they can continue living their lives, then so can I.I ended up adding the clarinet part after a moment of inspiration during my trip to the ICA ClarinetFest 2023 in Denver, Colorado. Voice and clarinet are my two passions, so I thought I would use Epilogue to put them together. This piece has yet to be premiered in its current form, but I hope to someday. Performed by the dwsChoraleThis lovely trio is a curiously out of context setting by William Shield of words from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream In Shield's setting the three voices simply admire a beautiful woman, in enticing harmonies - a fine piece of music deservedly part of the repertoire of vocal trios everywhere; but in the play the words form part of a speech of jealousy between childhood friends and the potential end of that friendship The scene in Shakespeare's original: The fairy world - in the form of Puck - has interfered most clumsily with the passions of the human world, with the result that human lovers are confused in their loves: Demetrius, Helena's lover, now loves her friend Hermia, who doesn't love him, and he ignores Helena, who loves him but is already becoming somewhat insecure about the powers of her feminine attraction. Helena is therefore jealous of Hermia's beauty.
