I really wanted to write a more profound Christmas song with an important message embracing a modern view of Christmas since so many songs are commercialized or limited in meaning.Having lived in the Arizona desert since 2007, snow has become a novelty to me, and I was inspired by its beauty and the memories I had of winter growing up in northern Illinois. The chorus that repeats throughout the song presents an irony of winter warming the soul. I found this to be both interesting and also meaningful in that I was describing my new viewpoint of winter snow (seeing more beauty in it than before) and presenting a metaphor for life-one that encourages the listener to see the beauty in something that most northerners despise.The first verse begins with sensory perceptions including seeing, hearing, touching, and smelling various natural qualities of winter. The second verse describes the joy of children playing in the snow and their belief in winter stories. The third verse is directed at worrying adults with a message of hope for the future. The bridge encourages the listener to look past the negativity and differences in other people and look towards Christmas and the new year for a hope renewed. The final verse concludes with the traditional religious view of Christmas tradition.

Alan Bullard's Canticle of Freedom (A Song for Peace), written in 1999 and first performed in 2000, is a prayer for a new millennium of freedom and peace, and each of the four movements takes as its starting point one of the verses from the nineteenth-century Christmas hymn 'It came upon the midnight clear'. It is scored for mixed choir, children's or youth choir, soprano and baritone soloists and a moderate size orchestra. The first movement tells of a solemn, still, and peaceful earth, and the second of a jubilant heaven. The third movement speaks of 'two thousand years of wrong' - the wars and persecution that have disfigured the last two millennia - and the last movement leads us from death to life, with a positive and joyful hope for the future: in the words of the hymn: 'When peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendours fling'. The text has been selected from a variety of poets and sources, ranging from mediaeval times to the present day. Published by Burke & Bagley (A0.787250). SONG OF THE MOUNTAINS is a setting for mixed (SSAATB) choir with piano accompaniment of text adapted from prose by American naturalist John Muir (1838-1914). Commissioned for the Combined Choirs of St. Joseph's School, Seattle, directed by Rick Boyle, who premiered the piece at Benaroya Hall's Nordstrom Recital Hall on May 6, 2004, in the second annual New Works New Hope concert for the benefit of Gilda's Club Seattle. The piece was revised in 2007 and the premiere of the revised score was given on November 16, 2007, by the Queens College Chorus, Cindy Bell conducting, at the Aaron Copland School of Music in New York. It was selected by the Portland Vocal Consort for their 2013 Best of the Northwest program. Duration ca. 6 minutes. Conductor Cindy Bell says, Driven by a refreshing text of American naturalist John Muir, Bartholomew has created an accessible work that flows easily through both key and meter changes, and features expressive, lyric melodies contrasted by exciting rhythmic drive. Song of the Mountains is almost cantata-like, or through-composed, in that each line of Muir's text receives equal and interesting interpretation. Occasional use of the triplet rhythm creates both a relaxing effect (grasses cease waving) and driving sense of forward motion (Vibrating!). Effective use of dynamics and interweaving of choral parts make for each section having a musical life of its own. In a soulful manner, the piece begins with the familiar song When Peace Like a River. This soulful hymn insists on finding peace, regardless of the world’s sorrows. The music then moves to a majestic trumpet processional. Entitled Soulful Peace, this tune honors those who made it possible for us to feel peace: parents, caregivers, family members, mentors, teachers, friends, and veterans who have served our country. Whether we feel the soulful melody in honor of them or in their memory, they remain an important part of our peace. After shifting to a calming woodwind verse, the processional then crescendos to a very emotive, full band verse. After the climax, the processional settles and gives way to a delicate chorus of It is Well With My Soul. The hymn tune begins delicately in the flutes, yet the brass echo the stately processional. The hymn majestically builds toward its own climax, accompanied by a trumpet fanfare. This triumphant piece reminds us that it can indeed be Well With My Soul!.

This peaceful, yet elegant arrangement of this much-loved song of encouragement is suitable for preludes and offertories as well as an ideal selection for memorial services or funerals.Ranges for each instrument are as follows: FLUTE ~ F#4 to B5 (first F# above middle C to the second B above); VIOLIN ~ B3 to A5 (first B below middle C to the second A above). This arrangement could also be performed by two violins (but not two flutes unless the flute can play a low B). For violin players, all notes on both parts are playable in the first position making this piece an excellent choice for early-intermediate string players.Both the FLUTE and VIOLIN get to lead with the melody at times making it enjoyable and equally challenging for both players while adding interest for the listeners. The FLUTE and VIOLIN alternate leading with the melody throughout the verse and two choruses.
