I wrote a Vibraphone solo, utilizing a slight amount of spoken text and quartal harmonies, to emphasize the need for peace our world today. It is a short piece that is in free time, allowing the performer to interpret the speed their own way. It was begun in 2013 and completed in 2016; the total duration is 6:41. The texts by Solomon Ibn Gabriol, Samuel L. Clemens (aka Mark Twain), and one attributed to Fra Giovanni Giocondo but probably written by Earnest Temple Hargrove, take the listener on a journey from grief/death to hope/heaven. Themusical language is unapologetically chromatic. Other than perhaps the most academic of composers these days, chromaticism has largely fallen into disuse. Although the vast majority of my music written since around 1998 is either tonal or more often modal, I occasionally return to a chromatically saturated musical language to express certain emotions through sounds that are alien to thosemusical languages. I did so in the present title with the intent of painting the three texts more poignantly. While most passages feature familiar-sounding triads and octaves, the melodies, harmonies and cadences sound unfamiliar. My father succumbed to lung cancer in 2007. Setting this poem helped me
through the grieving process. Bill Merideth was not a musician by trade, but did
enjoy playing the guitar every now and again. The accompaniment found in the
opening section represents some of the chords that he would strum in his recliner
after a hard week of work.
As the piece progresses, the accompaniment becomes more complex representing
the extensive chemotherapy that may have extended my father's life, but certainly
changed him. Finally, as the text brings us closer to death in the final stanza, the
accompaniment is now absent, representing my father's last days in hospice where
he could no longer care for himself.
I certainly believe in the healing power of music and hope that this setting brings
comfort and peace to you as it continues to do so for me.

One by one, the lights settled back onto the tree to rest for the day. A setting of a very powerful poem by English poet, Ted Hughes, about the onset of autumn in an English (Yorkshire) garden and the surrounding countryside. It is full of pathos and passion, harmony and dissonance, chaos and peace - just like English weather!This is a very individual and innovative choral setting of Hughes' poem which is, itself, rich in 'meaty' metaphor and colour - and the composer is a vegetarian! It evokes a savage Nature within a savage landscape where humans and animals compete for space and for food. It is October, the fields and woods and gardens of rural Yorkshire are readying themselves for the cold and desolation (and despair) of winter which isn't far away in time. 'A glass, half-filled with wine, left out(side) To the dark heaven all night, by dawn Has dreamed a premonition of ice across its eye as if the ice-age had begun its heave.' That is only two and a half stanzas but you see from these lines that there are veiled threats of (Nature's) violence in the heavy tread of the poet's slowly-building angst over what is happening in the surrounding countryside - and his fear grows, and his awe grows, with every line. There is even fear underlining the very last line: 'And now it is about to start.' Winter is creeping closer and closer towards the house and it will not be pleasant to experience!I have tried to instil a little of this in the music which keeps skidding from consonance to dissonance and back to consonance. Sometimes the dissonance piles up, like snow driven by the wind piles up into deep banks; sometimes the music relaxes into stillness and calm (painted in tonal music) like a crisp, mild late autumn or early winter's day when the sun warms the landscape and life appears bearable, tolerable. I hope this adds to the song's 'charm'. It wasn't easy to write: sometimes the right music was elusive. The music ends with the word 'October' repeated three times, with voices overlapping in a little canon. This conjures up the wistful feelings of the poet as he looks out onto a peaceful scene, soon to be filled with all manner of 'natural violence', while his inner peace will soon be shattered by the mayhem about to be unleashed around him.Setting Ted Hughes is no easy task. It is for choirs and choirmasters to judge if I have succeeded in conveying the 'sense and sensibility' of a classic 20th century English poem.The price is for one copy: please purchase a sufficient number of scores if you intend to perform this work. This wonderous little musical piece , from the motion picture The Lorax from the Dr. Seuss movie, depicts of the main character the Lorax speaking for the trees and in many ways advocating for all things, people and groups that can not speak for themselves. And even in the times that we live in, this story still rings true today. And beauty can still be found in sadness, or endings whether the be falling leaves in the park, or even with the events that are said , we grow and learn, being grateful for what we have , and learn to find our voices to speak out for the things that truly matter in life. This music, which is much like a hymnal, especially in the beginning of the piece, is perfect for this message. A message of peace, reflectiveness and hope and courage. As a side note , this piece should be played with lots of thoughtful rubato, and when the meter changes for 4/4(5/4) to 12/8, the beat does not change from quarter to dotted quarter .In the middle, minor section, I really added and improvised my musical skills per chord and melody of the song which makes my arrangement very distinctive, individual and unique. This would be great for a movie themed concert, all by it's self, for a funeral, for Arbor Bay/ Tree ceremony , for fall or autumn music/ themed programs, recitals, etc. Sure to be a well used piece in your collection. Scored for piccolo, flute 1, 2, 3 4, alto and bass flute.
