Brass Bands like whiz and to show of difficult transcribed orchestral works, but here is some refined whiz which cannot be attacked in a 21st C style. Pure classical, requires refinement of the blow, must flow with ease without sense of struggle. This last movement of Haydn's symphony No 104 is a fave of mine, there's no room for bluff, a wrong note will be easily picked out. Armchair technique needed here, even the best bands will have to work to produce the required style and approach!

The Ride of the Valkyries Wagner.What do brass bands like, a good tune, a challenge, a good blow and technical work-out, a chance to show that a brass band can do what any other instrumental group can do including the symphony orchestra, and being able to bring the great classics to locals in their community, in the concert hall and in the band stand where the music comes to the public too? I’m sure that desires and ideals might be listed above. Besides the history of bands 180 years ago having no music and those within arranged popular tunes of the day and great classic symphonic works (often truncated), not al lots has changed apart from the fantastic influx of composed works for band over the last 60+ years, there’s also been a steady influx of orchestral works form the 1980’s as the technical facility of players has grown beyond belief, for EG. My old mentor and teacher Howard Snell working with Desford and other bands into the 90’s started to arrange orchestral works that A. Were fantastic works of musical caliber (many unknown the the BB rep) and, B. A superb challenge to the band - Daphnis and Chole Suite No 2 Ravel and Pines of Rome Respighi to name just two. In the Frank Wright days of orchestral transcriptions certain things already had to be in place with the work itself, key or transpose-ability, tesssitura, time length, and over all technical difficulty. Published by Phillip Lawrence (A0.883769). I recently published Romeo & Juliet Tchiakovsky which is a big bridge musically technically and and needs a big chunk of stamina. Before I did this there was another work on my mind of an opposite challenge for band in the orch rep dep.An impressionist work of great delicacy, subtle beyond belief, the fabric is fragile like lace with a feeling of transparency and lucidity and must move as if played by one person, colour and timbre, light, lithe, the orchestration a masterpiece, utilising fx from all dep’s often at ppp and most difficult to replicate at all for brass band.And, it’s a fair cop! The purists outsiders will say that this is the last piece that should be arranged for a brass band. So why arrange the greatest impressionist work ever written, for Brass Band?Well, because it’s there, and I believe it can be played with the above requirements by band. The work was written in the summer of 1894, and finished in the September. Three months later in December the Societe Nationale de Musique conducted by Gustave Doret with Marcel Moyse playing the opening flute solo gave the first performance. The concept of the piece was built around a poem by Stephan Mallarme, who describes the wishes and dreams of a faun in the heat of a summer afternoon. Prep for tres difficile?

Many fx required here, gargling in harmony is one, tuned pots and pans another, shouting and screaming and canine imitation also needed and the bashing of tin drinks trays. Undoubtedly a 100% entertainment concert show-stopper and was used once at BIC Gateshead by the Fairey Band. Make Em' Laugh.

There’s no doubt that this is one of the saddest and yet beautiful works ever, The Urlicht from Mahler’s 2nd Symphony in C minor for alto voice and alternatively here for Flugel solo. I arranged this 14 years ago for a dear friend trumpeter of mine who passed before his time and a favourite of his.I discovered Mahler 2 at the age of 16 and like Kaplin, it has been a journey of understanding and study for me sifting through Mahler’s own handwritten score at times and through his letters at the time of composing which on and off was near 20 years! The recording you will here attached is by The Fairey Band (from my album with them It's Not Unusual worldofbrass) conducted by Frank Renton and sung by one of the most beautiful alto voices in this land, Margaret McDonald. I’ve no doubt in my mind this arrangement works 100% hence me including the recording itself. Alternatives within the score are Picc A tpt in lieu of Sop, the solo line flg instead of mezzo voice, vibraphone instead of harp.

The original folk tune as picked up in the 1960's by Simon & Garfunkle, for Intermediate/Jnr. Brass Band. The tune is anon and indeed very old. In my title, the word Impressions is used to describe the harmonic style which is decidedly French of a Darius Mihaud style or even a light Messian. It should keep the young players on their toes in an aural sense and the tuning of a challenge, and perhaps feeling rather musically grown up delivering this in a concert?

I was at college in the late 70’s (RNCM) and the brass dep fave groups were EWF (and Maynard), we formed a band, brass and rhythm section called Brass Injection where the members of the band arranged EWF/Maynard/Blood Sweat and Tears/Steele Dan and the like. (5 tpts, 4 troms, tuba, rhythm section). We colleges giggled, Manchester gigged, and after 4 years we ended up in Ronnie Scott’s. In The Stone seemed to be a must for brass band and difficult dictation and I don’t like to leave things out or simplify. So I’m starting an EWF collection with September and Fantasy to come soon. The semiquaver syncs will take some time to give it the relaxed feel especially in the bass dep. Here’s to the memory of Brass Injection and RNCM days.

The idea for this arrangement was given to me by an old friend who played in BR Edge Hill band with when we were kids, Christine Humphreys and to do it for bass trombone, the more I looked at it thinking of Eric Burdon’s voice from The Animals with his first verse nearly too low for him to scrape the lower notes and then the later verses near to top of his register suited. The Animals though in A minor, so for BT I dropped it to Ab minor a real shall we say juicy register for bass trombone plus the added attraction of setting it in the lower octave pedal area to show the instrument off. There aren’t may Bass Trom solos in the rep, so now we add one more!An interview with Eric Burdon revealed that he first heard the song at a club in Newcastle, England, where it was performed by Northumberland folk singer Johnny Handle.The Animals were on tour with Chuck Berry and chose him because they wanted to sing something different. The Animals version moves the narrative from the initial point of view of a woman drawn into a life of decline to that of a man whose father is a gambler and a drunk, rather than the adorable person of the previous versions.
