It is slow and ponderous and is scored for alto flute, viola and piano.The second movement, Gallop, is, as its name suggests, manically fast and wild, but not without humour and some hilarity. It is scored for flute, violin and piano.Both movements are differently scored at the special request of Gary Woolf and his Oakmount Trio, for whom it was written.In it I wished to express the two polar opposites of what life can be like – either slow, dark and brooding or insanely busy and fast moving without a second to think straight.

A Forest Fantasy Suite for Bb Clarinet and Piano was published April 2021 and is full of twists, turns, lyrical melodies, and an unexpected surprise or two! The suite, aimed at clarinettists of grade 3-6 standard (the first two movements are the easier of the three) consists of: Forest Fantasy (movement 1), Waltz by moonlight (movement 2), and A Witch's Joke (movement 3), were expertly written by Emma Arandjelović (Scotland, UK). The suite works both as a whole, or as individual stand alone movements. .

This exciting two-movement piece for one piano, four hands is inspired by the region of Brittany (Bretagne), France. The first movement, Plougastell, is a lively original dance tune (with a more lyrical middle section) written to honor and evoke the idyllic Breton commune of Plougastell-Daoulaz. The second movement, Mouezhioù an Amzer Dremenet (Voices of the Past), is a dynamic medley of four well-known Breton folk tunes that interact playfully as they build to the final dramatic flourish. Program notes included. Composer's note: I wrote these movements as Mother's Day gifts for my mother Rae Anne Tyra in 2017 and 2019. We still enjoy playing them together.

Sonata for Piano No. 6 Meditation is in two movements. The two movements are titled River's Flow and Prayer. The shorter first movement is both lyrical and motivic using some added tone harmony and the full expanse of the keyboard. The reference to the opening main idea played very softly at the end of the movement creates a sense of return to the movement's beginnings. The gentle opening of the second movement begins with a chant-like melody played in the lower register of the instrument. The movement grows from this point drawing its musical material from the opening melody and building to the climactic section of the work. Three staves are used to notate this section of the movement with the full expanse of the keyboard again being explored. Like the first movement, the second movement ends softly. However, the second movement ends with every note in the D natural minor scale (or D Aeolian mode) sounding together, creating a darker ending and a contrast to the conclusion of the first movement. Both movements feature expressive playing and mostly slow tempos and are intended to convey the “Meditation†part of the title by painting a picture of both introspection and transcendence.

The two movements have been beautifully arranged for Horn and Piano by Ralph Sauer. The Intermezzo is lyrical, sensual and Eastern sounding. The Tarantella is a sprightly folk dance from southern Italy. The curious name comes from the wolf spider or Tarantula whose bite is highly poisonous and in earlier times was believed to cause the victims to engage in a frenzied dance.The two movements are about nine and a half minutes in length and are appropriate for advanced performers.

Throughout the work,there is an integration of the total chromatic spectrum (represented through row-likeconstructions) with triadic and tonal elements, particularly connected to the interval of aminor third.The first movement, Speaking of Sunsets, is bold and dramatic throughout. (The title refers to American poet James Tate’s poem Never Again theSame and also Charles Wuorinen’s musical setting of that text.)The second movement, Build Me a Garden, takes its title from an original song I overheardwhile planning this work. It sung by a homeless man who was then sitting on the banks ofthe Charles River in Boston, Massachusetts. His song (bearing both textual and musicalresemblance to various folk songs and African-American spirituals) spoke of hopes anddreams:Build me a garden, far ‘cross the seaBuild me a garden, a place I can beThe water is wide, the journey is long.I’ve put all my sorrows into this song.The movement opens with a slightly modified version of the song, which is developed overthe course of the movement. The ideas from both previousmovements are put together in new, dancing combinations. Coming out of the darker firsttwo movements, this movement continually seeks places of joy. The dance breaks down,and a recollection of the first movement leads to a bright coda.

A challenging yet accessible piano piece that is interesting and very rhythmic. Don’t let all of the meters scare you - it is easier to figure out than you’d think at first glance! The first movement - No Toe Tapping - opens with a little motive, then plays around with it in an effort to frustrate anyone tapping their toes in the audience. [Yes, that’s a tip ‘o the hat to Dave Brubeck’s “Unsquare Danceâ€]. No. 2: Surprisingly Calm - has some interesting and thick sounds. Don’t be afraid to take it slow and easy and make it as rubato as you like. The third movement - Over-Caffeinated - starts with a tri-tone, just because it sounds interesting and a bit jarring. The Right and Left hands argue for quite a while. It all ends in a major blowout, complete with references to the first two movements, and then the final surprisingly pleasant C major chord is followed by the right hand, which JUST has to get in the last word.

Introduction to The Rubáiyát of Omar KhayyámThe Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is a Persian poetry collection first put together in 1460 in Shiraz.  It consists of quatrains, four-line poems, with a set of unconventional themes.  The poetry is irreligious and questions the afterlife and God's providence.  It shows keen awareness of the shortness of life and the finality of death. It advises therefore that every fleeting moment of every day should be savored, with wine, lovers and song. The combination of a serious philosophy of life and a carefree attitude has made the poetry popular for centuries.  In 1859, Edward FitzGerald brought out a loose English translation that took the world by storm.  It became the most beloved and widely known poem in the English language for decades until its popularity finally faded in the late twentieth century. Although they were attributed to the great mathematician and astronomer, Omar Khayyam (d. 1131), the poems were by many anonymous hands, and he was just a frame author, akin to Scheherezade in the Arabian Nights.- Dr. Juan Cole, Richard P. Mitchell Collegiate Professor of History at the University of MichiganAbout the CompositionTwo Scenes from The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám explores and embodies two of the main themes that carry throughout the quatrains of the poem collection. In FitzGerald's translation, the quatrains follow a day to night cycle. The two movements reflect this by starting off with an abrupt wake up section and ending the piece with a nocturne.  The first movement, Wine, celebrates the camaraderie, joy and chaos that comes through the physical joy of being with friends. The clarinet, violin and piano interact in a conversational way, talking, laughing, and insulting one another in their own independent lines.The second movement is entitled Intimacy and explores the emotional joy of connecting with one another. The movement is set in a waltz style dance and draws influence from Chopin, Liszt and other romantic era composers. This is juxtaposed by youthful and energetic phrases so that the piece embodies all forms of love: young love, years of marriage and even friendship. Each movement has a sense of urgency and density which is present in the rubá'iyát as well, expressing to the reader that our time on Earth is so short and to make the most of each day.---------------------------Adam Lenhart (b. 2002) is a University of Michigan student of music theory, composition, voice and organ from Ottawa Lake, Michigan. As a theorist, his areas of study vary widely, including 18th century counterpoint, the early American Sacred Harp tradition, and impressionism. As a composer, his music draws inspiration from nature, mathematics and poetry. In 2020 he was awarded the Michigan Music Education Association’s Young Composers of Michigan award, as well as first prize in the University of Toledo Young Composers competition. Lenhart has also participated in numerous ensembles across Michigan, including the MYAF All-State Choir, Tecumseh Pops Orchestra, University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club and the SMTD University Choir. He thoroughly enjoys collaboration with other composers, performers, poets and visual artists. Some of his recent projects include collaborations with individuals from the University of Michigan Chamber Music, History, and Poetry departments.
