The work was written in response to the wartime events of our time, and juxtaposes vocal movements based upon Latin prayers with purely orchestral sections (meditations on wartime subjects). The Latin prayers in this work consist of the Agnus Dei from the Roman Catholic Mass, a prayer which asks God for forgiveness of the 'sins of the world,' and two hymns to the Virgin Mary: Ave Maria and Ave Maris Stella. The concept of the Blessed Mother as the spiritual mother of all humanity is a powerful one which I believe touches us on a deep level. As children, our mothers give us guidance, tenderness, unconditional love and protection in a world where evil exists. In our time, horrific wartime events daily take their toll on innocent civilians, while motherhood is revered in all cultures. For soprano soloist, mixed choir, and orchestra or ensemble (with organ). This is one of the best-loved and most widely performed choral works of the twentieth century. The texts (in Latin and English) are from the Missa pro Defunctis, the Book of Common Prayer, and the Psalms. The seven sections form an arch-like meditation on the themes of life and death: prayers on behalf of all humanity, psalms, personal prayers to Christ, and in the central Sanctus an affirmation of divine glory. The full scores have been edited and engraved by the composer himself and are. presented in handsome, cloth-bound editions. Vocal and orchestral material is available on hire.

Written the month following the tragic events of 9/11, it is a reflection of the chaotic times in which we live. Originally written for SATB chorus and strings, Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace) is a prayer for peace to the loving God of all people, that out of our current discord peace and harmony may come to all humanity. In this setting a woodwind quartet plays what was originally the choral part. The work is in three sections (ABA) with a coda. Throughout these sections the melody wanders in search of a harmonious resting point. In the B section the quartet and strings part ways and resonate increased dissonance. The second A section exactly duplicates the first. The work concludes with an ever-increasing sense of harmonious repose. The listener may hear occasional reflections of Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings or Pavane for a Dead Princess by Maurice Ravel. Dona Nobis Pacem was premiered as a choral work in May 2003 by the combined choirs of the John Duss Music Conservatory, Duluth MN, and Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Superior WI, under the direction of the composer. It is purely coincidental that there are 191 measures in the work......the numbers in the date of 9/11. Contains full score and parts.

On Resistance: A Prayer for Those Who Peacefully Protest was composed, as the title suggests, to speak words of encouragement to those who engage or wish to engage in nonviolent protest. As daunting as it may seem to speakout against the global war machine, it is becoming increasingly imperative that we do so, as the horrors of war seem to multiply day after day. It seems that the most vulnerable of humanity are the ones who suffer the most in the face of unending war, and it is on their behalf that we must speak out. To do so in any other way than the way of peaceful protest in the tradition of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Gandhi, and Jesus Christ of Nazareth simply escalates violence and pours fuel on the flames of war. On the other hand, when we engage in nonviolent protest, we promote peace and become, as Jesus said, children of God. Blessed are the peacemakers indeed.

Israel'sdeliverer is near, proclaiming peace, bearing good news, announcing salvation, leadingIsrael back to Jerusalem. The New Testament likewise speaks of deliverance frombondage – bondage from sin, and healing of the breach between God and humanity. It isthrough the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus that this deliverance isaccomplished. In both cases, there is cause for great joy.Musically, movement from the more subdued preface (part 1) to the festive Latin groove(part 2) conveys the transition from journey to jubilation.The present rendition, written for SATB choir and piano with optional flute and oboemarks the latest evolution in the work's arrangement history. The originalaccompaniment included guitar, bass, drum, flute and electric violin. However, in 2009,through a collaboration with bassist/arranger, Perry Orfanella, a full orchestral score wasdeveloped. Most recently, in order to make the piece more accessible to church choirsand other choral groups, Phil Sims (musician/arranger and partner of Imagine MusicPublishing) reduced the orchestral score and completed the present arrangement forpiano and SATB choir.
