It has been suggested that the inspiration for the title could have stemmed from a painting depicting a snowy landscape. This was an extremely popular backdrop among Impressionist artist like Claude Monet or Alfred Sisley; the latter painted Snow at Louveciennes.No 12 Minstrels This is the final prelude of Book One.  Debussy delivers a surprising and humorous gem that is a tribute to the performing minstrel groups which started to appear in Europe around 1900. The music of the minstrels included many contemporary jazz elements such as ragtime and blues, rhythms which were incorporated into the music of quite a few fascinated European composers. This prelude cleverly captures the frenzy of the quick-change minstrel act and their rhythmic excitement, opening with a banjo-like theme supported by uncharacteristically blatant dominant to tonic pedals in G Major. We also hear a brief sentimental song and a recurrent drum theme before the prelude comes to a satisfying close with a hymn- like plagal cadence.

This is an original Mozart prelude plus his arrangement of the dramatic and forceful Fugue VIII from Wilhelm Friedemann Bach's Huit Fugues Sans Pédale, F.31 (Wilhelm Friedemann was J.S. Bach's eldest son). Mozart wrote this to play at the Sunday musicales of Baron van Swieten in Vienna, who insisted that all participants play music of Bach or Handel. Kaplan is engaged in a project to make classics from other genres available to woodwind players and has also arranged several other great works for this ensemble. The woodwind quintet is especially well suited for contrapuntal music since the distinctive tone colors of the wind instruments bring out the contrapuntal lines and make them clearer to the listener.Note that all six preludes and all six fugues from this work are also available as a single purchase on this website. The basic musical material (founded upon collections of minorand major thirds) is shared among all nine movements. An elegiac quality runs throughout the work.The first prelude (Flowing) is inspired by the piano music of Johannes Brahms, whose contributions to the instrument’sliterature have been a significant and ongoing influence on my work.The second prelude is fast and bright. Consistent staccato textures are maintained as the two hands intertwine.The third prelude (Funereal) is dedicated to the memory of American composer Donald Martino (1931–2005). The musicrefers very obliquely to Martino’s setting of Robert Herrick’s poems of death and eternity in The White Island (1985).The fourth prelude (Dancing) is light and buoyant. After a melodic middle section, the opening music reverses itself to theend.The fifth prelude (Distant, echoing) is dedicated to Richard and Dee Wilson. Through large blocks of sustained sound (bothquiet and loud), the movement explores certain harmonic colors of the piano.The sixth prelude (Moderate, singing, with humor) is dedicated to English composer Michael Finnissy. The opening ismarked “like an ‘off-kilter’ folk song,†and this original melody is subjected to a variety of transformations and textures.The rhythmic patterns are constantly in flux.The seventh prelude (Slow, very lyrical) is melodic and passionate, with a nocturnal character. The middle builds to anintense climax before dying away.The eighth prelude (March) is spiky and crisp. In the trio, the march theme is turned first into a tonal ballad beforegradually transforming back into the language of the march. A faster reprise of the opening music follows.The ninth prelude (Envoi: Very slow, from afar) is an elegaic “farewell.†Romantic gestures and harmonies try to assertthemselves before the music dies away.Performance Note: Although it is preferred that the entire set of nine preludes be played in concert, individual preludes (or smallerassembled groupings) may be performed when necessary for programming needs. If the entire set is played, however, the order of thepreludes should not be changed. The same calm, the same purityaux Cheveux de Lin from book one. Nature and innocence demand a spontaneous and laidback approach to those delicate and poetic riffs to match the colour and aroma of fragrant purple shrubs. Birds may be heard calling, accompanied by the distant refrain of a shepherd’s flute in this harmonious and homogeneous prelude — an admirable contrast to numbers IV and VI.In direct connection with this prelude, Marguerite Long mentions a Debussy souvenir pairing the scent of sea mist and coastal pines, and if she is correct this would take us to Arcachon in south west France. It is possible that the young composer first went there in 1880 with the baroness Nadejda Von Meck and later in 1904 when he stayed with the uncle of Emma Bardac (neÌe Moyse), his future bride.The pastoral and familiar poetry of a woodland scene where the earth’s pervasive scent mingles with the subdued display of patches in purple.— CortotA peaceful melody on a shepherd's pipe, resonating on the silent moorland. Minstrels: arr.wind quintet.  Voiles is a composition by Claude Debussy for solo piano from 1909. It is the second piece in a set of twelve préludes published in 1910. The title of the piece may be translated to English as either veils or sails; both meanings can be connected to the musical structure. Except for some mild, localized chromaticism and a short pentatonic passage, the entire piece uses the whole tone scale. I have taken some liberties with the arpeggios in the 2nd half of the piece and also ignored the grace notes. For something different, try this piece. (Treat the tempo as 4/8 rather than 2/4 i.e. count it in 4. Well worth the challenge! VI. Des pas sur la neige (Footprints in the snow): very atmospheric wintry feel! VIII.La fille aux cheveux de lin (The Girl with the flaxen hair)One of Debussy’s most popular and well known pieces: ideal for that quiet wedding moment.  XII. Minstrels: almost a ragtime feel.

Program note: There is a lot of time to compose when you are stuck at home during the Pandemic 2020.. This is the second work I completed under lockdown. The first one, Kindertodtenlieder for soprano and piano, I started on April 26 and it was completed on May 13th. While exercising at home, I was watching on YouTube Debussy’s Préludes Book 1 and 2, and the idea came to me that I should try my hand at writing something that is impressionistic. Why not? So I started my own set of preludes using the Debussy as my model. Each movement will take two or three notes from the original Debussy version and then I would divert and go in a complete different direction, following my gut instinct. My Préludes like the Debussy is in twelve movements. I. Moderato II. Allegro TRIO III. Allegro IV. Adagio Moderato V. Moderato VI. Largo VII. Moderato VIII. Largo IX. Moderato X. Largo Adagio XI.
