Twenty-six Preludeswas composed for Holly Roadfeldt between September 2013 and April 2014. Unlike the famous preludes by composers like Bach, Chopin, and Debussy, mine are not organized by key. Instead, they are organized by threads: compositional ideas that are developed over the course of the entire set. Composing the set in this manner allowed me to develop several ideas concurrently with the idea that they would in some way merge together by the end of the set, giving the several disparate ideas a real reason to exist together in the same set. In addition, because I was not using key as a resource, I was not constrained by the number 24. The end result is a cycle of preludes that is in some ways more closely related to a Schubertian song cycle than to the Preludes of Chopin, Bach, or Debussy. That is not to say that there is not a close conceptual connection with the Preludes of those masters (there are subtle references to each of those composers in the score), but my intention was to treat the Preludes in a cyclical fashion rather than, as is the case with Bach and Chopin, an exploration of the nuances of the 24 keys. The preludes were not composed in the order that they are presented. Some of them came in quick bunches: two or three in a day; others took longer. In addition to developing the compositional threads, I was interested in creating a wide range of moods that also held together as a set. Overall, the moods become more intense as the set unfolds.The premiere performance was given by Holly Roadfeldt on November 18, 2014 at the University at Albany. The well-known soothing Prelude in C from Johann Sebastian Bach's "Das wohltemperierte Klavier" is arranged especially for the 22-string travel harp. It contains lever changes. This arrangement includes a version with lever notations (diamond note method) and fingering suggestions. The range is from A below the small C (C3) to A above the treble staff (A2-A5).
The arrangement remains true to the original, but includes the "Schwencke measure" = m. 23 and some necessary octaviations to accommodate the smaller 22-string travel harp. Charles Gounod used this version to compose his beautiful Ave Maria melody. .

The original arrangement of the notes are provided for comparison.  This piece was written for the sight reading test at the piano competition at the Paris Conservatory in 1913. The harmony is definitely of the 20th Century with flexible rhythm and a unmistakenly with a Ravel sound albeit a simple piece comparatively.It will serve as a good introductory lesson to Ravel's style.Bonus piece is by yours truly.

The piece is in six movements, based on those of a traditional Baroque suite. Each movement is dedicated to the memory of a friend of the composer (or in one case, two brothers) who had died fighting in World War I.Ravel also produced an orchestral version of the work in 1919, although this omitted two of the original movements. The word tombeau in the title is a musical term popular from the 17th century, meaning a piece written as a memorial. The specific Couperin, among a family noted as musicians for about two centuries, that Ravel intended to evoke is thought to be François Couperin the Great (1668–1733).Ravel stated that his intention was to pay homage more generally to the sensibilities of the Baroque French keyboard suite, not necessarily to imitate or pay tribute to Couperin himself in particular. It introduces techniques that Ravel frequently uses but that less-than-advanced students rarely encounter in repertoire at their level: numerous hand and arm crossings, 3-against-4 polyrhythms as evident in the habañera, very high registers, dissonances like German 7th chords and diminished thirds, and Spanish-flavored modal writing, to name a few. This piece also recalls my time as a cruise ship duo pianist aboard the ms Maasdam, which visited five ports in Spain.2.    Le jardin des papillons (The Butterfly Garden)Le jardin des papillons is an homage to Maurice Ravel's piano writing as shown in pieces including the Sonatine, Le tombeau de Couperin, and others. It introduces techniques that Ravel frequently uses but that less-than-advanced students rarely encounter in repertoire at their level: sometimes-awkward hand and arm crossings, extended tertian chords (9th/11th/13th voicings), whole tone sonorities, and some modal writing, to name a few, while still maintaining a clarity of voicing that students will find in Ravel's own music.3.    Le jardin englouti (The Sunken Garden)Le jardin englouti is an homage to Maurice Ravel's minuets (like the middle movement of the Sonatine and the minuet from Le tombeau de Couperin). This piece was inspired by the Sunken Garden, a former landmark on the Indiana University campus that sat across the street from the practice building in which I taught dozens of piano students, coached numerous singers, and learned piles of solo and collaborative repertoire before moving away in 2019. The Biology Building greenhouse now sits on the former Sunken Garden site.4.    Point PeléePoint Pelée is an homage to Maurice Ravel's toccata-style movements, like the finale of the Sonatine or the toccata from Le tombeau de Couperin. This piece can be programmed with Le jardin des papillons and Le jardin englouti to form a three-movement suite that roughly corresponds to the Sonatine. This movement was inspired by Point Pelée National Park, in Ontario, Canada, a frequent roosting spot for monarch butterflies making the long migration from Canada to southern Mexico. In this piece I tried to capture the flutters of the roosting monarchs' wings as they'd settle into the trees at night and venture out across Lake Erie after resting.
