My Prelude on Woodworth (Just As I Am) is intended for church pianists looking for interesting arrangements of hymns familiar to their congregations. The first section of my arrangement is simple enough. But the remainder requires advanced pianistic skill with its wide-ranging arpeggios in the left hand and the use of so-called 3-handed technique, wherein the right and left hands alternate playing the melody notes in the middle compass of the keyboard, while also negotiating the aforementioned arpeggios in the left hand, as well as quickly moving arpeggios and scale passages in the right hand. Near the end of the piece the use of the sostenuto pedal is also required. In short, my arrangement is a virtuosic treatment in 19th century romantic style of a mid-19th century hymn tune. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

I have written a programmatic, neo-romantic/post-romantic prose and musical fragment/miniature based on Schlegel's writings about a Hedgehog. Fragment in the sense that it is not fully developed, yet, in another sense, it is overdeveloped for its length. There are several modern elements in that it is bitonal at one point. At another point, I pit Scriabin's mystic chord, which is his synthetic mode, against what I feel is its nearest aeolian mode, c-minor, which is modernistically dissonant. It is written in 'classicized' AABA popular song form, which is perfect for a miniature. It revolves around the programmatic, free verse' Prayer,' a plea to God for sleep, elusive due to the mourning of lost love and the associated emptiness and grief felt deep in the night. It is motivic in that there is a repeated augmented 6 to a half-diminished cadence that introduces the theme and then serves to transition each small section, in a secondary dominant style repetition until reaching tonic. -A1 is a simple statement of the linear theme and harmony in 6ths, and 9ths, almost in keeping with the introductory and transitionary cadence, at least intervallically. -A2 is a restatement of that theme with an added countermelody (which becomes the subject of section B) woven between the upper linear melody and the altered bass accompaniment. -B begins with a short statement of the countermelody bi-tonally, the left hand in c minor, the right in g minor. There is a brief transposition between several keys, bitonally, while the sostenuto pedal holds a pedal tone until it attenuates completely. The two measures build from repressed despondency to rage, as strong emotions often do, quickly turning to dissonant chaos. The dynamics and intensity build to a diminished chord whose top note moves up half a step to a Scriabin mystic chord arpeggio. The held sustain pedal melds the dissonance together with emotional tumult, which fades as quickly as it came, as outbursts often do. -A3 starts with the motivic cadence and a deep bass pedal tone. This section is the crowning moment in the piece. In sixths, the macabre accompaniment moves to the right-hand upper tessitura as the more developed 'A' melody moans below in the bass and baritone as the music ebbs away. A simple c-minor arpeggio strains against a very similar Scriabin mystic chord arpeggio, an octave or a minor seventh apart, ending on an A major and A flat in sweet, gentle, unresolved dissonance against a dying root pedal tone, the final teardrop.

The captain calls for the sails to be furled lest they be torn to shreds by the gale force winds. They have endured many storms before, but this is unlike any The Tempest has encountered. The men try to lift their spirits with tales of what has come before and the acts of heroism which have helped them to survive. Their bravado is cut short as the storm intensifies. Lightning flashes across the sky and they realize now that there may be no coming back from this voyage. The swells grow ever larger and cracks can be heard throughout the ship as support beams and masts give way under the tremendous stress. There is no hope of reaching the safety of land as she begins to take on water, but the crew does not abandon their posts…they do not know the meaning of surrender. A final series of cracks can be heard as The Tempest slips beneath the waves into the waiting abyss.

It’s our tradition that the last stanza of a hymn is sung in unison, so that I as the organist can change the harmonization and keep things interesting. Sometimes I know ahead of time what I’m going to do, and sometimes I make it up on the spot.On this particular morning I planned on being spontaneous. (Can spontaneity be planned?) When we got to the final stanza, I threw on the 16′ pedal reed and went to town.I don’t know if this is the case for all musicians, but while I’m playing my brain is working on several different levels. Most of these are involved in actually playing the music, but there’s also a running commentary on how things are going. This commentary is usually really boring: It’s going okay. It’s going okay. It’s going okay. Sometimes the messages are more interesting: Uh-oh. She just dropped her mute. I missed that chord; remember to circle it when we’re done. My page turner appears to be on fire.So: We’re in the final stanza of Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun. Big, majestic hymn. Over a hundred congregants and choir members are enthusiastically singing in unison. I’m leading them from the organ with an improvised accompaniment that involves all of my limbs. It’s fair to say that I was concentrating hard.Suddenly the commentary part of my brain breaks in: Dude, your feet are totally playing Canon in D. Cool!Canon in D is the most famous work of Johann Pachelbel, a German composer who preceded Bach by a few decades. It’s overused at weddings, but it’s actually a really good piece of music. The original is for three violins and a basso continuo part, which would usually have been played by harpsichord and cello. In this case, the basso continuo plays the same eight measures again and again throughout the piece. This technique of repetition is called a ground bass. While that’s going on, the violins play several different themes on top of it.When I was improvising that Sunday, my feet had accidentally wandered into that ground bass part, which happened to fit nicely with the melody we were singing. During the sermon (sorry Pastor!) I started going through the violin themes in my head, seeing if any of them could also match up with the hymn tune. Some of them worked and some didn’t. I decided to write a sort of theme and variations, where the hymn tune appears in various forms. Sometimes it’s played along with one of the violin themes, and sometimes a violin theme serves as an interlude on its own. And except for one passage, the left hand is always playing some version of the basso continuo theme. I also changed the meter from 4/4 to 3/4 to make it more interesting. It culminates in a climax worthy of a king. I hope you enjoy it.

Once again the influence of George Winston and Mannheim Steamroller can be heard as this prelude begins with a burst of joy and energy that does not subside, but only grows with each verse. The changing meters make this piece a challenge to play and requires a strong technique to handle some of the scale passages. This arrangement is a far cry from the original music of Mendelssohn, but the lyrics inspired me to create something full of vibrancy and passion to match the glorious news that the angels came to deliver! The first verse establishes the 5/4 meter heard throughout the prelude and is filled with the pealing of church bells in the right hand as they send forth the melody in octaves! Meanwhile, the left hand continues the broken chord pattern established in the opening. In the next verse, the left hand is now rising and falling, while the right is still playing the melody in octaves. Only now it is filling the spaces with eighth notes to match the left hand…essentially combining the two hands of the previous verse. For the final verse, the left hand takes on the orchestral role of brass and percussion with thunderous chords punctuating the rhythm of the melody in the right hand. There are moments of fireworks as the hands break free of the 5/4 meter for some wonderful, albeit brief, scales which increase the growing excitement. The piece concludes with a return of the rhythmic material from the opening as the hands work their way down the piano in arpeggiated fashion only to race back up the keyboard for a final flourish before a resounding Amen: Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Glory to the new-born King!

These pieces were composed as an homage to my all time favorite composer, Alexander Scriabin. I became interested in piano music composed for the left hand alone after suffering an injury to my right hand. This led to my discovery of Scriabin's masterful Prelude and Nocturne, Op. 9, in which Scriabin effectively creates the illusion of two hands playing. I decided to create my own left hand pieces by channeling Scriabin in his middle to late style to compose my very own Prelude and Nocturne.

Before 1903, Scriabin was greatly influenced by the music of Frédéric Chopin and composed in a relatively tonal, late Romantic idiom. The most beautiful tone quality will be elusive if the left hand is weak in technique or phrasing. ♫ The Classical Music for Tablet Series offers piano masterworks by classical composers formatted to be read on 10 inch tablets. My arrangement of the hymn tune Darwall (Rejoice, the Lord Is King) is intended for church pianists looking for interesting arrangements of hymns familiar to their congregations. The structure of the piece consists of three different settings of the tune, separated from each other by a recurring segment that is rhythmically distinctive and displays decidedly modernist harmony. In the first setting the unadorned hymn tune is played by the left hand, while the right hand provides an accompaniment of rapidly repeated chords generating a strong sense of forward motion. The second setting, in a different key, is unified by a continuous stream of dotted eighth/sixteenth note rhythmic units. The third setting is similar to the first, but set in 12/8 rather than 4/4 meter. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I enourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

Two years later I performed this Prelude.In this arrangement the left hand theme is taken by the Bass Tuba with the Tenor Tuba interlinking for some of the higher notes and to reinforce the pathos of the falling phrases towards the end of the piece. The right hand swaps around between horns and flugelhorn with high range of the horn being used to accentuated the minor feeling of the piece. Perhaps one performance note might be that players of the supporting instruments need to be very careful not to use too much hard tonguing!

My Prelude on the hymn tune Terra Beata (This Is My Father's World) is intended for church pianists looking for interesting arrangements of hymns familiar to their congregations. It is one of two settings for piano of Terra Beata that I have written. In this setting there are two statements of the melody. The first places the melody in the soprano register with a repeated-note pattern serving as the accompaniment in the left hand. The second places the melody in the bass register moving at half the previous speed and accompanied by a downward moving arpeggiation pattern played by the right hand. The second half of the melody returns to the soprano, harmonized with 4-note chords, and accompanied by rapid downward moving scales played by the left hand. In the final phrase, the pace slows, leading inconclusively to a chord of the 13th on G-flat at mid-phrase, before resuming in the main key of E-flat and ending triumphantly with a repeated-note trumpet-like pattern. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

The Herald Angels Singâ? while the Right Hand continues with â??It Came Upon the Midnight Clearâ? (in 4/4). The first two parts are in the key of Bb Major; the return of 6/8 in the final section is accompanied by a key change to C Major. How can two hands do all this at once, you might say? Easy, well, sort of easy, anyway. The left hand plays the melody up high AFTER playing the open fifth low, crossing over the stationary right hand. in each measure. The harmony of the right-hand arpeggio changes slowly and subtly as the melody floats above. Some high ledger lines, with note above three lines alphabetically marked for ease of reading. Chromatic harmony with mixed accidentals in right hand. A joy to play, and very pleasing to the listener, I think, anyway... if I don't believe in my music, how can I expect players and teachers to do the same! Lasts about a minute and 45 secs. A faster OR slower tempo yields a more cascading or contemplative effect.

There is a definite pastoral atmosphere to this arrangement, giving it the feeling of one of his Nocturnes. The gently flowing river of the left hand in the first section provides the support for the melody as it weaves its way in and out of the eighth notes of the right hand. The second verse takes a more chordal approach to the music with the tune being played in octaves while the off-beat rhythms provide a french horn-like accompaniment. Suddenly, there is a burst of energy as the chorus rings out in left hand octaves while the right hand gives the impression of a sudden gust of wind. There is a return to the chordal section and ultimately to the flowing river of the opening before a final statement of the melody (though somewhat altered) over a pedal point brings the prelude to a very quiet and peaceful close.
