In 2006, I was asked to introduce the hymn Blessed Jesus, at Thy Word (Liebster Jesu) at an American Guild of Organists festival of German hymn tunes. I composed this quiet setting of the famous German hymn tune in an homage to Franz Liszt's organ treatment of the Jacob von Arcadelt setting of the Ave Maria (1862, S.659). I hope I have captured the spirit of Liszt's piece and given it new life in this setting. This chorale prelude is appropriate for any worship service and for wedding prelude music as well.

This short prelude was written as a processional to precede a festive arrangement of the ancient cherubic hymn, Let all mortal flesh keep silence, which received its first performance at Berlin Cathedral on November 29th 2017. This was commissioned to mark the 25th anniversary of John F Kennedy School’s annual Advent services, in collaboration with the American Church in Berlin.The prelude incorporates themes from various Advent hymns, as well as elements of the fanfare theme from the main choral piece. As well as providing an introduction to a performance of the Cherubic Hymn setting (which can be ordered separately), the prelude may also be performed as a stand-alone piece.As in the first performance, I have left the registrations to be added by the organist.

Thomas Commuck (1804 to 1855) was a member of the Narragansett tribe and is considered the first NativeAmerican to publish a musical work using Western European notation. The work, Indian Melodies, is a shape‐notehymnal published as a contribution to the hymnody of the Methodist Episcopal Church and was published in 1845.Guitar Sonata on themes by Thomas Commuck is a traditional four‐movement work with an opening sonatamovement (Mooanam); a double variation form (Menominie and Susquehannah); a canonic minuet with trio (Pequot and Missouri; and a closing prelude with fugue (Flathead). The melodies are labeled as they appear throughout the score, though not always with reference to their original forms. Kennedy School in Berlin, to mark the 25th anniversary of their annual Advent services held in Berlin Cathedral. It was performed by joint choirs, drawn from students, parents and faculty, and choir members of the American Church in Berlin on 29 November 2017.The piece is built around the ancient hymn, Let all mortal flesh keep silence. I was asked to write an organ prelude, to serve as a processional as the choirs assembled. This may be ordered separately through SwirlyMusic.org - and now also through SheetMusicPlus.After an opening fanfare-like section, the hymn setting starts gently, with sopranos singing in unison, with successive verses using contrasting choral forces to reflect the words, and the music builds to a big climax, with a return of the fanfare opening, for the final verse, At his feet the six-winged seraph, ending with joyful Alleluias. The quality of both sound and picture isn't great, but it will provide you with an idea of the atmosphere and impact of the piece. The sound recording covers the whole piece, using Sibelius sounds. Higher Ground (I'm pressing on the upward way) is a 19th-century American gospel song with lyrics by Johnson Oatman, Jr. (1856-1922) and music by Charles Hutchinson Gabriel (1856-1932).Both Oatman and Gabriel were prolific writers. Oatman, an ordained Methodist Episcopal minister employed primarily in retail and insurance work, is said to have written over 5,000 hymns and songs in the latter 30-some years of his life.  Although not a talented singer nor recognized as an outstanding preacher, he was acknowledged to have ministered to countless souls through the words of his hymns and songs.Gabriel, a Methodist Episcopal church music director and editor of gospel song books, anthem collections, music instruction manuals, and more, is said to have written between seven and eight thousand texts and/or tunes under his own name and several pseudonyms. In addition to the music for Higher Ground, he composed the music for such well-known gospel songs as His Eye is on the Sparrow and Will the Circle Be Unbroken? The opening line of Oatman’s text (I'm pressing on the upward way) draws especially from Philippians 3:13-14: “Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.†Other sources include passages from the prophets Isaiah and Micah and the Psalms of Ascent (120-134). Gabriel's music cleverly evokes the upward vision of the text with an ascending arpeggio spanning an octave on the first words of the refrain (Lord, lift me up) and the matching of the highest notes of the tune to the words a higher plane.This arrangement for brass quintet expands the meter of the tune from 3/4 to 4/4 to allow for some countermelodic call-and-response by various voices in the ensemble. An air and three variations on the well known traditional American tune that is usually sung to the words of Amazing Grace. The tune (Air) is introduced in hymn tune style to my own harmony. The first two variations are in the style of John Stanley. The third variation is in the form of a chorale prelude. The suggested stop registration is for three manuals and is only a guide. All movements only require a small number of light stops and therefore can very effectively be played on a small two manual instrument.
