I was praying to be aware of God’s presence as I began my day. As I meditated on God’s presence, the words of this song began to come to mind. I pulled to the side of the road, found an old envelop, drew a staff and began writing. ♫ We are told the heavens cannot contain God; God is spirit; and there is nowhere we can go to escape His presence. Thus, every inhabitant on earth is continually within God’s physical presence. On the other hand, we are urged to ‘come into His presence.’ Also, Christ’s presence is continuously available to us through the presence of the Holy Spirit. Experiencing the presence of God is an act of the will, an act of faith. Remembering and experiencing His presence is life changing for everyday life. We are in His presence at work and school, at the market and while we are driving, in sorrow and in pleasure, in danger and in peace. ♫ I think of God’s presence when I lap swim. I cannot float in the air, but I can float in water. This arrangement for advanced players aims to present Edvard Grieg's well-known piano miniature as faithfully as possible for a clarinet quartet. The only simplification I've made is to transpose it up half a step from the original D major. It's a musically satisfying teaching piece that will also delight audiences in a "solos and ensembles" concert, or as music for a wedding. The prominent Alto Clarinet part can alternatively be played on Basset Horn.

This piece won second prize in the 2018 NATS Art Song Composition Competition.This song cycle is, in part, a meditation on what it means to be a mortal being who exists in time. The first and last movements each present a different take on looking back, and the cycle moves backward in time from evening to mid-day to dawn. Images from each poem are woven into the music; the first movement is full of sewing imagery, so in places the pianist imitates the ebb and flow of a sewing machine's ostinato.
