RayThompsonMusic #3466544. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.553661). The String Quintet in E-flat major, Op. 4, was composed by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1795. It was adapted from his Octet in E-flat major, Op. 103, which, despite its high opus number, was in fact composed by Beethoven in 1792/1793 but was published only in 1837, ten years after the composer's death. The Quintet was published in Vienna in 1796.The quintet has been viewed as a mere transcription of the octet. However, there are a few differences between the two works. In the first movement, there are significant changes in the exposition and substantial ones in the development, reprise, and ending. The ensuing Andante employs new themes and involves significant changes in the ones retained. The Scherzo and finale are also substantially different: among other alterations, a second trio was added to the former and a new alternate theme was inserted in the latter.This arrangement is for wind quintet. (Horn in Eb) but horn in F also provided.

Published by Armin Terzer (A0.942157). In a twist of fate, Beethoven’s String Quintet op.4, which is based on the Wind Octet in E flat major op.103, is here re-arranged for wind quintet. The arrangement contains all four movements in their entirety: I. Allegro con brio II. Andante III. Menuetto piu Allegretto – Trio I – Trio II IV. Finale: Presto Indicative tempo markings are provided. Total running time is 30+ minutes (but individual movements, especially the first, may be performed on their own). This arrangement is a great addition to the classical/romantic repertoire for wind quintet – its original instrumentation for wind octet really shows in the beautiful and idiosyncratic, but also virtuoso lines for every instrument. This is a workout for all players – the level is advanced.

Anton (AntonÃn, Antoine) Joseph Reicha (Rejcha) (26 February 1770 – 28 May 1836) was a Czech-born, Bavarian-educated, later naturalized French composer and music theorist. A contemporary and lifelong friend of Beethoven, he is now best remembered for his substantial early contributions to the wind quintet literature and his role as teacher of pupils including Franz Liszt, Hector Berlioz and César Franck.Reicha's 25 wind quintets, composed in Paris between 1811 and 1820, were mostly premiered from 1817 in the foyer of the Théâtre Favart by some of the world's fifinest wind soloists. They were well received and were played al over Europe shortly afterward.Reicha claimed in his memoirs that his wind quintets filed a void:At that time, there was a dearth not only of good classic[al] music, but of any good music at al for wind instruments, simply because the composers knew little of their technique.[Wikipedia]Notes concerning this editionIn preparing this edition various manuscripts were consulted including the facimilies held by the IMSLP and Clarinet Institute. The festivities and ceremonies surfaced throughout the nation all year. This composition was crafted as one of those celebratory creations. “Legacy of Valor” was originally composed for brass quintet and rock band, with two vocalists singing a stirring account of legacy handed down from one generation to another. I will not fail!I’m a guardian of the tradition of honor!Fly, fight, and win!When I hold my little boy,And think of freedoms he’ll enjoy,I ponder his destiny.Yes, it’s hard when I deploy!But distance cannot destroyWhat I love; what I fight so very hard to save!Generations come and go.I wish they all could knowHow it feels to serve America.The piece was difficult for the singers, but they practiced hard, and the USAF Heartland of America Band premiered it during an Independence Day concert tour in June and July 2022, including the grand patriotic concert at Mount Rushmore.A casual comment from one of the singers lingered: “You write for singers like they’re horns!” It is true that most of my compositional experience is with brass instruments. This double brass quintet instrumental rendition of “Legacy of Valor” is indeed a much more musically gratifying composition. It is the way it was supposed to be all along!Released in 2023 for the 76th birthday of the Air Force, this work and its message are appropriate for any patriotic event, including joint performances between any two brass quintets, civilian or military, American or global. Many stirring meanings can be communicated and celebrated through “Legacy of Valor”!

The arranger is an oboist who has decades of experience playing in quintets, so while there may be things that appear to violate the conventional wisdom of orchestration, rest assured that they will work in the quintet setting!

His first set of Organ Concertos, Opus 4 were published published in 1738. Often Handel would perform a Concerto at the same time as an Oratorio.Concerto in F Major Op 4, No. 4 is about 12 minutes in length and is in four movements: Allegro, Andante, Adagio and Allegro. It is a delight to perform and to listen to and beautifully arranged for Brass Quintet and Organ by Justin Bland.Instrumentation: Trumpet in E-flat (additional part in B-flat), Trumpet in B-flat, Horn, Trombone and Tuba.

Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1489496). On 29 November 2023, a tragic accident occurred of the shores of an island in Japan. A CV-22 Osprey aircraft from Yokota Air Base in Tokyo crashed, killing all eight crew members. Being stationed at Yokota as an Air Force Bandsman during that trying time, my emotions turned to music as a gift of solidarity from the PACAF Band to the grieving family members. The completed music was delivered to my Commander a week after the shocking event.On 15 February 2024, the Base conducted a somber memorial service for the eight heroes who gave their last full measure of devotion in the line of duty. This piece was performed in lieu of “Taps” toward the end of the ceremony, as “Taps” was to be sounded at the Base Retreat Ceremony later that day. The gift of music was profound. Tears from the family members seated in the front rows flowed freely at the end of the performance, punctuated by increased sobs. High-quality professional prints of the score and parts were paid for by the United States Air Force and gifted to families of the deceased and distinguished visitors at the memorial service.One poignant detail was that at the performance during the memorial service, the brass quintet was augmented by a Japanese trumpet player from the nearby Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Band. This symbolic gesture of solidarity greatly impacted the profundity of the event.Last Full Measure, Op. 143, for brass quintet was completed 6 Dec 2023. This composition is not to be confused with Op. 33: Last Full Measure of Devotion, for 24 trumpets. However, in an allusion to that monumental early work, this present brass quintet’s “last measures” echo the final strain of “Taps” in memory of the eight crew members who perished. Duration: 3:00. Ultimate Sacrifice, Op. 152, for brass quintet was started 15 Oct 2023 during the compositional process of “America’s 250th” and was completed 4 Apr 2024 with a title that has reference to both Jesus Christ and military personnel who perished in the line of duty. The scriptural reference used in the subtitle, John 15:13, though obviously referring directly to the Savior, has also been used to parallel anyone who has sacrificed their life for the good of another: “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” Atypical of my compositions, this does not end in the key in which it began. The depth of sacrifice herein extolled yields an unalterable loss. Duration: 4:00.Although this work had been prepared for publication, it was not released for months, which is not common for my works. On July 13, 2024, an attempt was made to assassinate the former president during a Trump rally in Pennsylvania. The touching news of a hero who instinctively shielded his wife and daughter reached my ears, and I decided to fittingly dedicate this composition, “Ultimate Sacrifice” to my new hero, Corey Comperatore. May his selfless courage inspire this struggling world.

Far too many Americans don’t even know that it is on the calendar. With my deep love for America and the glorious stars and stripes that represent everything good in the nation, as Flag Day approached in 2024 toward the end of my first of three years serving in Japan, I strove arduously to complete this work in time for official release on this patriotic day. It quickly gained traction on social media outlets and is truly a rousing patriotic piece. It is a substantial concert piece for any occasion with a duration of 4:45.

This collection of short compositions for brass quintet was conceived specifically to supplement a dearth of appropriate and artistic original compositions for the young aspiring brass quintet. These pieces are most fitting for a good high school quintet or a beginning college ensemble that wants a conquerable challenge. With a variety of keys, styles, and tempos, they lend themselves well for deep work on the core ensemble skills of rhythmic accuracy, intonation, and dynamic balance. These brief works are also quite enjoyable for the professional quintet to perform for ever-popular school shows, or simply to read as a warmup with the focus of improving ensemble skills. Performance time for all five pieces is approximately five minutes.“Blackhawk” (duration 0:45) was originally composed in D-sharp minor as a melody to be used in Comprehensive Trumpet Skills, Book 9: Sightreading and Transposition (p. 39). The quintet version is in concert D minor for more manageable execution. This brisk four-four work is perhaps the most difficult in the collection, with demands of multiple tonguing for all the instruments as well as fairly advanced intervallic jumps. “Lamb of God” (duration 1:00) is one of many hymn tunes originally composed by Dr. Thrower for use in Comprehensive Trumpet Skills, Book 7: Ensemble Skills (p. 54), intended to be used to tune unisons and octaves. As a tuning study it was published in the key of F major for B-flat trumpet, or concert E-flat major. The quintet version retained the original key of concert E-flat. The reverently subdued four-four tempo makes this the easiest piece in the collection, technically, though the three core ensemble skills listed in the introductory paragraph (rhythm, intonation, and balance) must still be extensively addressed. The horn part is perhaps the most demanding in “Lamb of God,” with arpeggiated discant lines toward the end.“Summer Solstice” (duration 1:10) was started on June 21, 2023, which was the summer solstice. It is a bright, cheerful piece in concert F major with a lot of interest in all the parts. One source of the title’s inspiration came from my family’s new situation living in Tokyo, Japan, where the dawn sky brightens around 4:00 AM on the longest days of the year, which obviously coincide with the summer solstice. The 70-second piece was completed four days after conception while the long days started at their earliest.“Triumph: Children’s March” (duration 1:00) was the catalyst for this collection. It started as a cute little brass quintet piece in the key of concert B-flat major, to be performed for children, such as for school concerts. The cut-time tempo is very brisk for a march, but animated little legs (or a more manageable audience activity of clapping hands) can easily handle the task. Although the first trumpet part ends up on a high C, there is an alternate note for a more comfortable ending.“Waltzing Puma” (duration 0:30) is an evocative title for an evocative piece. Like “Blackhawk,” this melody was composed as a melody for Comprehensive Trumpet Skills, Book 9: Sightreading and Transposition (p. 36). The melodies in that series took on titles of military aircraft, and this one was the helicopter “Puma.” Since this tune is in a fast three-four, it became the “Waltzing Puma.” The quintet version retains the original key of concert F minor.

When I wrote the first few distinctive notes into the computer, my ten-year-old son said that it sounded “futuristic.” Somehow that sparked memories of a novel I had started years ago, titled “Dimension Traveler,” based on dimensional theories I had developed. With that fresh inspiration in mind, the piece wrote itself with opening movie credits in mind.The form is thematically palindromic, the center point being m. 77. The beginning to rehearsal letter A mirrors K to the end; A to B is parallel to J-K; B-C = I-J; C-D = H-I; D-E = G-H; and the central thematic sections E-F = F-G. Concerning that central turning point, the thematic material shifts from the trumpets’ first statement at letter E to low brass with the trumpets taking on the pointillistic accompaniment at letter F. Of interest is the parallel of C-D and H-I wherein the motivic material, including dynamics, is quite literally reversed note for note to a climax.For aural aesthetics in performance, there is an optional cut from letter K to m. 142. Thematically, the structure remains chiastic, but taking the cut simply truncates the end for a motivic flavor rather than repeating the entire opening entrée. There is nothing wrong with purists performing the work in its entirety—it is simply a matter of taste among the performing ensemble members.Stylistically, this piece strays far from my typical compositions. Besides the pervasive echoing eighth-note motifs, the key never changes, and there is no chromaticism. Inspired in that regard by the masterpiece “Quintet” by Michael Kamen, the diatonicism often flows in planed clusters mildly influenced by the choral works of Eric Whitacre. Another deviation from my well-established compositional habits is the instrumentation including bass trombone instead of tuba. Of course the part can be played by a tubist, though the bass trombone meshes more seamlessly with the timbres of the other instruments in passing along the pervasively echoing eighth-notes.The individual brass parts appear deceptively simple, and indeed, they are not technically demanding besides a couple high notes in the trumpets. However, putting this piece together in an ensemble setting is rhythmically treacherous!The four-minute final product indeed sounds like it could be the opening to an epic movie of the same title, based on the novel-in-progress.
