This is “Spring for Woodwind originally a movement from The Four Seasons for strings. This arrangement is from a collection of flex woodwind quintets arranged by Dr. Donald Jay Smith developed over years of teaching secondary school band. The optimal instrumentation is, of course; Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon and Horn. But, additional parts have been added so that a second clarinet can cover the oboe part or a second oboe can cover the clarinet part (I actually had that problem once-two great oboe players (or a flute?) and no clarinet available to cover the part), Bass Clarinet covering Bassoon and a Bb Horn part in case the student only reads that part on the horn or is covered with flugelhorn/baritone or another Bb instrument. The quintets were always performed one per part and the students enjoyed playing this arrangement from 6th grade through high school!

Organizer, promoter, composer and conductor James Reese Europe, called by Eubie Blake the Martin Luther King of Musicâ€, was the leading figure in the African-American music scene of New York City in the 1910's. Europe composed the spirited Clef Club March as the signature theme for his 125 member Clef Club orchestra that performed at Carnegie Hall from 1912 to 1915. During World War I, Europe directed the 369th Infantry Regiment Harlem Hellfighters Band to great acclaim in performances throughout France. Arranged for a traditional woodwind quintet of flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon, with alternate parts clarinet in B-flat substitute for oboe, alto saxophone in E-flat substitute for horn, and bass clarinet in B-flat substitute for bassoon, the historically important work has audience appeal and is accessible for less experienced performers. This entertaining and playful cakewalk, forerunner of ragtime style, is by the prominent Canadian-American Black composer Nathaniel Dett who studied with notable teachers as composer Arthur Foote at Harvard, was the first African-American to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Oberlin Conservatory in composition and piano in 1908 and received an Honorary Masters Degree in 1932 from the Eastman School of Music. There aren't many rests and the page turns are almost impossible (except for the horn) but it is fun to play. Duration is about 6:45. The key is G minor so it lies well for winds. It has been transcribed for concert band and can be heard on YouTube. Enjoy!

Themes for Part 1 are taken from the opening scene of Act Two, in which Haldin’s mother, in exile in Geneva and worried by the lack of news from her son, learns that Victor was the assassin and has now been caught and executed. Part 2 is an instrumental interlude. Part 3 is based on the scene in which Razumov is urged to visit Mrs. Haldin, an encounter Razumov dreads because it was he who informed on Haldin to the government. The final Part corresponds to the scene in which Razumov learns that news received from Russia has released him from suspicion for Haldin’s death by placing responsibility on an innocent man. The Suite was commissioned by a consortium of ensembles led by the Aeolian Winds of Pittsburgh, who presented the world premiere performance on November 9, 2008, at the First Baptist Church of Pittsburgh. Dett studied with notable teachers such as composer Arthur Foote at Harvard, was the first African-American to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Oberlin Conservatory in composition and piano in 1908 and awarded an Honorary Masters Degree in 1932 from the Eastman School of Music .
