I was inspired by the beauty of sun rays piercing through the clouds in the sky, and how every combination of these light beams are unique in shape and size. These sun rays are represented through beautiful dissonances, extended fermatas, and subtle staggered percussion entrances. The piece has natural progression towards a noticeable peak, with very slight accelerations, and then slowly fades to an ending similar to that of the beginning. This is a wonderful piece to showcase the beauty in dissonance, the significance of subtlety, and offers several solo moments for every section of the band, starting with the horn and ending with the vibraphone.

Throughout all of life’s trials, hope gives us the strength to rebuild and confidently reinvent our circumstances. Rays of Hope is an original piece for handbells that depicts the remnants of a storm that has passed, and then begins to hint at the light that is coming to bring us a new day. The opening illustrates the passing unrest and gives way to a bouncy theme that conjures imagery of dancing light. A thoughtful middle section reminds the listener that uncluttered days are never a given or soon forgotten. But, hope does return with the theme to round out the ending of the piece. Techniques such as singing bell, suspended bells with mallets, thumb damp and LV are incorporated. The texture of the piece is further enhanced by the addition of chime tree, ocean drum and/or rain sticks and optional handchimes, all combining to add interest.

One can think of Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven as a comparison for the variety of dynamics and expressive qualities involved. The introduction is to be tempered with a light touch and feel with accents as what the performer feels is necessary to capture the mood and attitude there. The song begins with a free flowing broken triad and rich bass which has a essence of a darkness of mood which develops and builds the expressive qualities as indicated and transitions in the second movement and has a nice singing melody that portrays a glimmer of hope and freedom from the sometimes challenging trials of life. There is a very bombastic section in the third movement in a forte mode that beacons the breaking free of the things that can limit our human potential such as self doubt and lack of self confidence.

Main Titles of America was composed during shelter-in-place in July 2020. The piece was premiered in Winter of 2020 and was selected as a finalist in the 2021 National Young Composers Challenge. The composition was largely inspired by film music. In a film score, there is often a piece called Main Titles that plays during the opening scenes of the film. Typically, this piece encaptures all the major musical motifs present in the score of the movie. As the name suggests, Main Titles of America portrays the major themes of America in musical form. The three themes the piece highlights are opportunity, freedom, and love.The main musical motif appears early in the piece and is supported with eight notes and triplets from the harp and violas. The overall feel is adventurous and hopeful with energy building. The main motif is prominent throughout the piece, and almost every instrument plays the motif at some point. Each instrument represents a unique person who has the opportunity to flourish in America. The second motif represents freedom, and it is primarily played by the woodwinds. In particular, the flutes with their light, feathery sound help to express this idea. This motif is more playful and adds a touch of cheerfulness and lightness to the piece. It reflects the happiness of being free. The main motif and the second motif are intertwined just like opportunity and freedom. The third motif represents love and is prominent in the second half of the piece. The same eighth notes and triplets provide seamless energy and flow. While still maintaining a dream-like feel, this motif is meant to sound more grandiose and emotional. The sweeping themes and romantic harmonies are intended to portray the feeling of an ideal relationship. The piece ends with a triumphant brass chorale (the same motif from the beginning) followed by a tutti chord. It’s the musical representation of look how far we’ve come! The piece highlights the infamous American Dream - that anyone in America has the opportunity to pursue their dreams, find love, and create their own destiny.

Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins were big inspirations for Sydney's songwriting. She was especially drawn to the deeply emotional lyrics in many of their songs.Cycles of Life, the title track from Sydney's current release, was composed for her late step dad. The song is about the cycle of birth and death: Cycles of life go on, yet we carry all that we've known and loved through the ages. Time, another track on Sydney's current release, is a song about how time passes more quickly when we are doing something we cherish. Brian's Song, inspired by the loss of her father-in-law, reflects: All that really matters is the way we fill our heart, and the ways that it has loved. Dawn, a track from Sydney's album Seasons, is a beautiful piano-based instrumental with light string background. It portrays that very peaceful hour as the sun slowly lights up the world -- the hour of dawn.Sydney is a poet. She sees the world through a heart that feels the joy and sorrow of the world and those she meets. Her gift is the ability to transfer that emotion into music. She paints musical portraits of the things that bring meaning to life: relationship to living things, emotional healing, discovering what matters most and honoring that as best we are able. Stevens' beautiful piano-based music aligns one with their own heart. Although some of her music can be described as New Age, her roots are heavily based in classical and jazz. Her study of classical composition makes her music more complex than some New Age music. Her music has been likened to the impressionistic composers such as Claude Debussy. Sydney's formal training is also reflected in her ability to compose for orchestral instruments. Her latest release, Cycles of Life, was solely recorded and produced by Sydney, programming all of the virtual instruments.Sydney has a great love for jazz. Keith Jarrett was an influence on her with his innovative and improvisational piano recordings and performances. She was particularly impressed with the freedom of style he portrayed in his performances. Bill Evans was something Sydney heard played as a young child. Where her mother was a classical pianist, her father was a jazz pianist. Perhaps that's why some of Sydney’s music can be described as a crossover between classical and jazz--remnants from those early years. Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins were big inspirations for Sydney's songwriting. She was especially drawn to the deeply emotional lyrics in many of their songs.Cycles of Life, the title track from Sydney's current release, was composed for her late step dad. The song is about the cycle of birth and death: Cycles of life go on, yet we carry all that we've known and loved through the ages. Time, another track on Sydney's current release, is a song about how time passes more quickly when we are doing something we cherish. Brian's Song, inspired by the loss of her father-in-law, reflects: All that really matters is the way we fill our heart, and the ways that it has loved. Dawn, a track from Sydney's album Seasons, is a beautiful piano-based instrumental with light string background. It portrays that very peaceful hour as the sun slowly lights up the world -- the hour of dawn.Sydney is a poet. She sees the world through a heart that feels the joy and sorrow of the world and those she meets. Her gift is the ability to transfer that emotion into music. Listening to her music is like taking a journey. She delves into depths of emotion, often taking the listener to places that can be dif.

Aggressively insistentThe genesis of this diminutive composition, and its subsequent title Six Forays for Flute and Clarinet had its inception at a dinner party held by flutist, Emily McKay. Jeremy and Emily were planning a collaboration including a CD recording featuring flute and clarinet music, and wanted me to compose a piece for them. I decided against a formal plan, and began in a sense, to unravel sound organization from the inside out. Imagining myself an audience participant, I wanted to hear clarity through brevity. I definitely did not want to impose gimmickry, but did choose to play with slight pitch bending-something to arouse the listener, but not to bore her with 20th century musical clichés. The result is a six-movement piece, around six minutes long. Organizing the music through titles allows for imagination for both the listener and the performers.Beauty of tone, magnificent musicianship, and virtuosity-these qualities in instrumentalists inspire all who create music. I am very grateful to Emily McKay and Jeremy Reynolds for commissioning me to write this music for them.

The greeting fanfare of a solo horn in tandem with the choir depicts a mystical incantation by doctors in Dublin’s Holles Street Maternity Hospital – ‘Deshil Holles Eamus/clockwise we go’, in other words, ‘while we wait for the mother to give birth, we will proceed in a clockwise manner’.
