A chorale benediction. Duration: 1:30. I composed this choral benediction for a collegiate commencement ceremony. Like a Renaissance madrigal, this piece abounds with word painting. For instance, the opening words are derived from James 1:17 and melodically reflect the Father’s light coming down from above. The harmony of the second phrase turns constraining when quoting 2 Corinthians 5:14 concerning the love of Christ, and, in the third phrase, the voices’ movements quicken at mention of the Spirit's moving. The doxological statement God receive the glory appears three times to honor the Trinity, and, finally, the lyrics ’til He calls you home signal the return of the home key to conclude the benediction. The writer calms his anxiety by holding on to God's promises.
