The movement of rediscovering his instrumental music has been increasingly successful in Europe since the 1990s, especially following the birth of L’Institut Gouvy in France. However, his solo vocal music has been waiting to be unveiled to the public. Volume One includes 52 songs of Gouvy.Gouvy traveled widely throughout Europe. He was also a lover of nature. Generally, he spent his winters in Leipzig, but in the summertime, he always returned to Hombourg-Haut, France, to stroll through the woods, to hunt, and to relax. Gouvy was fluent in several languages and had a great appreciation of the Renaissance French Poetry of Pierre de Ronsard whose poetry he had set to music. The fifty-two songs in this volume are largely by Ronsard and other Renaissance poets of La Pléiade.Although Ronsard is approximately 300 years older than Gouvy, they both seem to have the same interest in classical literature, though, admittedly, for different reasons. Celebrated by the French and English courts, Ronsard (1525-1585) was the leader of La Pléiade: a group of seven poets (Joachim Du Bellay (1522-1560), Rémy Belleau (1528-1577), Étienne Jodelle (1532-1573), Pontus de Tyard (1521-1603), Jean–Antoine Baïf (1532-1589), and Jean Daurat (1508-1588), who dedicated their efforts to writing poetry in French rather than in Latin (or Greek) as most of the Romantic poets did. They wished to enrich the French language, and establish a new literature which would be the equal of the other literature of their period, and the equal to poets of the past. French Romantic poetry featured the closeness of the poet to nature, and his ability to communicate with nature by personifying (anthropomorphizing) all of nature’s elements: flowers, the planets, the moon, the breeze, and even the sand upon the shore. As a significant melodist, Gouvy’s treatment of the vocal solo line and his treatment and development of the piano accompaniment places him in the upper echelons as a composer of songs. His diverse cultural life led a rich and significant musical life, interacting with his contemporaries who admired his work, and whom Gouvy knew well, such as Liszt, Brahms, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Berlioz and Gounod. J'attends le vainqueur [What are you doing there, little girl, With those freshly cut flowers ? What are you doing there, young girl, With those dried flowers ? What are you doing there, pretty woman, With those faded flowers ? What are you doing there, old woman, With those dying flowers ? I'm waiting for the victorious one] In my mind there were initially several possible interpretations of the poem My original thoughts were that le vainqueur means the conquering Christ and that the woman is waiting all her life with flowers before a church - waiting in vain for her saviour another possibility is that the woman is waiting for the winner of her affections it could even be that le vainqueur refers to the invading German army but this would not explain the fact that she waits all her life but, finally, as Raphaèle Larazoni suggests, (and more plausibly in view of other poems by Prévert) the vainqueur is simply the winner in a war - there is never really a winner in a war, so the woman waits all her life in vain.

Thérèse BRENET, born 22 October 1935 in Paris, France began her musical studies at a very early age, receiving her first prize in Piano from the Conservatoire de Reims.At the Paris Conservatory, her prinicipal teachers were Jean Rivier, Darius Milhaud, Maurice Duruflé, Noël Gallon and Henri Dutilleux and she obtained First Prizes in Harmony, Counterpoint, and Fugue. She finished her studies in 1965, receiving a First Prize in Orchestration, A First Prize with highest honors in Composition and the First Grand Prix de Rome in musical composition.She also won the Halphen Prize for Composition and the Fugue, a grant from the Coplay Foundation of Chigaco and was named honorable member of the National Academy of History of Reims. In 1971, she received the Stéphane Chapelier-Clergue-Gabriel Marie Prize from the SACEM and in 1973, the Silver Medal from the City of Paris.After her stay at the French Academy at the Villa Médicis in Rome, Thérèse Brenet undertook several post-graduate voyages for study, notably to Poland. Upon her return in Paris in 1970, she was immediately named to the Faculty of the Paris Conservatory (CNSMD de Paris) where she also was frequently part of the juries for music theory and composition, as well as electroacoustical music.Thérèse Brenet receiving her definitive SACEM membership from Georges Auric She retired from the Paris Conservatory in 2000 and has since devoted her time to musical composition. She uses both tonal and atonal musical language, which she uses to suit her personal style. Her works are strongly influenced by literature, by painting and by science (especially astronomy). She believes that a composer should use all technical means at his or her disposal and use them rather than be used by them.Her first commission from the French National Radio, Clamavit, for Narrator, Chorus and Orchestra which was premièred by the Orchestre Lyrique de l'O.R.T.F., under the direction of André Girard, with Michel Bouquet as the Narrator, was selected to represent France in the Composer's Forum of 'U.N.E.S.C.O., and was performed in many countries. Many other works have also been performed outside of France in countries such as Switzerland, England, Germany, Belgium, Ireland, the former Yugoslavia, Italy, Portugal, the Netherlands, Libya, Canada, Uruguay, Japan and the United States etc...

Images of Family is a collection of six pieces for solo piano inspired by the scenes from the passage through an individual's life and the different roles they play as members of a family. The first movement, Toddler, begins with a single repeated note to simulate the ticking of a clock. As any parent of a toddler knows, when things are that quiet, it's time to go find out what that toddler is up to. The second movement, Dandelion Bouquet, celebrates the precious, intimate moments spent with a young child, representing a small bouquet of dandelions carefully picked and presented to the child's mother. The third movement, Loading the Car, portrays the chaos of a larger family trying to leave on a family vacation. Fourth is Newlywed, a celebration of the optimism and beauty seen through a newly married couple's eyes. The fifth movement, Afternoon in Grandpa's Meadow, looks at life through the eyes of the more experienced generation. And finally, the sixth movement, Journey Home, portrays the final moments of life, the goodbyes to family members on this side of death's door, and the joyous reunion with other family members who have already passed on from this life and await eagerly on the other side. A more detailed description is included in the work's program notes.Difficulty: The difficulty varies from movement to movement. (Movements may be performed separately if desired.) Indeed, it is clear from a letter which Johann wrote in late July 1857 to Carl Haslinger, his publisher in Vienna, that the new polka had been prepared well in advance of the wedding (the fair copy of the full orchestral score made for the publisher's engraver is dated 9 August) and was enjoying success even before the royal couple's official engagement on 16August 1857. Sometime after performing the Caecilien-Polka in Pavlovsk, Johann despatched the work to the Austrian capital where his brother Josef conducted its Viennese première, together with that of Johann's waltz Telegraphische Depeschen (op. 195, Volume 28), at his own benefit concert in the Volksgartenon Sunday 18 October 1857. The Wiener Allgemeine Theaterzeitung (16.10.1857) remarked that both works have caused a sensation in St. Petersburg and are truly genial Viennese sounds full of verve and melody. Since tradition demanded that the German Princess Caecilie adopt a Russian name - Olga Feodorovna - before her marriage, so Johann's Caecilien-Polka also underwent a change of identity. On 8 December 1857 Carl Haslinger announced the publication of Strauss's Olga-Polka, on the title page of which is the inscription: Dedicated to her Imperial Highness Grand Duchess Olga, née Princess of Baden.
