Transposed from A minor down to G minor to suit brass instrumentation The Requiem in D minor, K. 626, is a requiem mass by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791). Mozart composed part of the Requiem in Vienna in late 1791, but it was unfinished at his death on 5 December the same year. A completed version dated 1792 by Franz Xaver Süssmayr was delivered to Count Franz von Walsegg, who commissioned the piece for a requiem service on 14 February 1792 to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of his wife Anna at the age of 20 on 14 February 1791. This is my arrangement of No.5 Confutatis (From the accursed).It begins with a rhythmic and dynamic sequence of strong contrasts and surprising harmonic turns on tuba and horn the tenors and basses (Trumpets and trombone) burst into a forte vision of the infernal, on a dotted rhythm. The accompaniment then ceases , and trumpet 1 and tbn enter softly and sotto voce, (Voca me cum benedictis ()Call upon me with the blessed) with an arpeggiated accompaniment on horn and trumpet 2. Finally, in the following stanza (Oro supplex et acclinis), there is a striking modulation from G minor to Gb minor. This music suits the brass quintet. Section III of the requiem is titled “Sequenz†(sequentia or sequence). It is made up of the following pieces I have arrangements of all of them, for varying types of ensemble * Dies irae * Tuba mirum * Rex tremendae * Recordare * Confutatis * Lacrymosa. I have also arranged Mozarts Motet “Ave Verum Corpus†K618.

Arranged standard brass quintet Mozart's textual inspiration is apparent in the Tuba mirum (Hark, the trumpet) movement, which is introduced with a sequence of three notes in arpeggio, played in B♠major by a solo tenor trombone, unaccompanied, in accordance with the usual German translation of the Latin tuba, Posaune (trombone). Two measures later, the bass soloist enters, imitating the same theme. At m. 7, there is a fermata, the only point in all the work at which a solo cadence occurs. The final quarter notes of the bass soloist herald the arrival of the tenor, followed by the alto and soprano in dramatic fashion. On the text Cum vix justus sit securus (When only barely may the just one be secure), there is a switch to a homophonic segment sung by the quartet at the same time, articulating, without accompaniment, the cum and vix on the strong (1st and 3rd), then on the weak (2nd and 4th) beats, with the violins and continuo responding each time; this interruption (which one may interpret as the interruption preceding the Last Judgment) is heard sotto voce, forte and then piano to bring the movement finally into a crescendo into a perfect cadence. My arrangement gives the trombone part to the horn, and the vocal entries are given to the trombone, horn and two trumpets. . Section III of the requiem is titled “Sequenz†(sequentia or sequence). It is made up of the following pieces I have arrangements of all of them, for varying types of ensemble * Dies irae * Tuba mirum * Rex tremendae * Recordare * Confutatis * Lacrymosa. La Messa da Requiem di Giuseppe Verdi è un'opera certamente religiosa, ma in un modo tutto suo, scritta cioè da un uomo che non era propriamente praticante: composta ed eseguita (su un precedente progetto per Rossini) nel 1874 per commemorare Alessandro Manzoni a un anno dalla scomparsa, è un lavoro che unisce, alla devozione quasi filiale per i due Grandi, una sensibilità operistica tutta verdiana. E in verità , i cantanti solisti che Verdi aveva in mente nello scrivere la partitura erano certamente voci d’opera.La prima nella chiesa di San Marco a Milano ebbe un tale successo che si tennero altre tre esecuzioni al Teatro alla Scala. Francis Tovey scrive: La Messa era arrivata nella sua vera casa (...) dove il pubblico, che non doveva badare alle convenzioni ecclesiastiche, poté dare sfogo al proprio entusiasmo, con esuberanza tipicamente italiana. Verdi non aveva intenzione di riservare la partitura a rare, solenni commemorazioni. La qualità drammatica e operistica del Requiem mal si adatta all’uso di un servizio regolare in chiesa, né il compositore voleva che funzionasse come liturgia. Fin dall'inizio, Verdi ha concepito il suo Requiem per l’esecuzione, non per la devozione; voleva che il suo lavoro fosse complementare alla popolarità di Manzoni per mostrare al mondo la cultura italiana, tanto che lo portò personalmente in tournée a Parigi, New York, Londra e Vienna.Il Requiem di Verdi, come Ein deutsches Requiem di Johannes Brahms, è l’affermazione di un dolore personale che si serve di un testo preso in prestito dalla liturgia sacra.Neanche Brahms, come Verdi, era particolarmente devoto. Per entrambi, le parole della messa da requiem per i defunti rappresentano il bisogno universale di esprimere le emozioni che ci assalgono quando una persona amata muore: dolore, perdita, tristezza, rabbia, paura del giudizio divino e speranza di pace sia per i defunti che per coloro che sono in lutto.Verdi inizia con i versi Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine che il coro e l'orchestra intonano in fasi sommesse e raccolte. I quattro solisti si uniscono al coro e all'orchestra per uno stentoreo Kyrie eleison. Il tonitruante boato orchestrale e corale del Dies irae che segue immediatamente il Kyrie è il momento più atteso e memorabile del Requiem. Qui i musicisti, i coristi e i cantanti devono produrre esplosioni sonore continue e inarrestabili. Gli ottoni, le percussioni, i legni e il coro sono tirati al massimo, mentre le voci gridano sgomento e dolore, e gli archi crescono di intensità e impeto. Del resto, il materiale musicale del pauroso Dies irae ritorna di continuo lungo tutta la Messa, dipingendo un quadro da Giorno del Giudizio: non a caso l’opera è stata equiparata all’affresco michelangiolesco della Cappella Sistina. Un lavoro cupamente drammatico, con intermittenti, brevi, violenti lampi di luce.Di volta in volta, Verdi ci fa vivere il terrore dell'inferno (timbri e registri bassi) e la luminosa speranza di salvezza, preparandoci alla gioia del Sanctus, con la tromba che annuncia Santo, santo, santo, Signore degli eserciti! Il cielo e la terra sono pieni della tua gloria!Verdi conclude il suo Requiem con un soprano che intona i primi versi di Libera me (Liberami, o Signore, dalla morte eterna in quel terribile giorno). Tutto il dramma, il terrore, l’angoscia delle sezioni precedenti ritorna, come se il compositore intendesse lasciarci con un senso di incertezza: saremo, alla fine, riscattati? Verdi riprende qui la musica del Dies irae, ma alla fine, il coro e il soprano finiscono in un sussurro quasi impercettibile, con Libera me. Libera me: una speranza, una preghiera, un gemito sommesso.

Originally written for an orchestra and four vocal soloists, it has now been transcribed by Regis Bookshar for a String Quintet, consisting of 2 Violins, 1 Viola and 2 Violoncellos, and would be a wonderful addition to any music library. This arrangement will provide students with the opportunity to play this beautiful composition, something which they may not have had the opportunity to do, otherwise. This selection could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services and is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this arrangement. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (25 pages). The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble has performed the Trumpet Quintet version of the Recordare for funerals, providing beautiful, introspective music for the occasion. There is some controversy surrounding the circumstances of the Requiem's composition because Mozart died before he could complete it. Count Franz von Walsegg had commissioned a Requiem Mass but Mozart had received only half of the payment in advance. So, upon his death on December 5th, 1791, his widow, Constanze, wished to have the work completed secretly by someone else and submit it to the count as having been completed by Mozart to collect the final payment. Joseph von Eybler was one of the first composers to be asked to complete the score and had worked on a number of movements but felt unable to complete the remainder and gave the manuscript back to Constanze Mozart. The task was then given to another composer, Franz Xaver Sussmayr. Sussmayr borrowed some of Eybler's work in making his completion, added his own orchestration to other movements and added several new movements which a Requiem Mass would normally comprise. He then added a final section by adapting the opening two movements which Mozart had written to the different words which finish the Requiem Mass, which according to both Sussmayr and Mozart's wife, was done according to Mozart's directions. The completed score, initially by Mozart but largely finished by Sussmayr, was then dispatched to Count Walsegg complete with a counterfeited signature of Mozart dated 1792. Despite the controversy over how much of the music is actually Mozart's, the commonly performed Sussmayr version has become widely accepted by the public, and is considered one of Mozart's finest compositions. The Recordare is considered by many people to be one of the most beautiful compositions in Mozart's entire catalogue. Regis Bookshar, a trumpet player, has performed the Requiem in concert with a full orchestra, soloists and a chorus and felt that other musicians should have the opportunity to play the hauntingly beautiful Recordare as well. So, in addition to this arrangement for a String Quintet, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this beautiful composition. There are Quintets, Sextets, Septets and Octets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. You may fine something else which may also suit your needs. I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a variety of styles, also available for purchase. You may find something else which might interest you. Please continue to check periodically because new arrangements are being added as often as possible. Hauntingly beautiful is how the Recordare from Mozart's Requiem is often described. Originally written for an orchestra and four vocal soloists, it has now been transcribed by Regis Bookshar for a String Quintet, consisting of 3 Violins, 1 Viola and 1 Violoncello, and would be a wonderful addition to any music library. This arrangement will provide students with the opportunity to play this beautiful composition, something which they may not have had the opportunity to do, otherwise. This selection could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services and is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this arrangement. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (25 pages). The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble has performed the Trumpet Quintet version of the Recordare for funerals, providing beautiful, introspective music for the occasion. There is some controversy surrounding the circumstances of the Requiem's composition because Mozart died before he could complete it. Count Franz von Walsegg had commissioned a Requiem Mass but Mozart had received only half of the payment in advance. So, upon his death on December 5th, 1791, his widow, Constanze, wished to have the work completed secretly by someone else and submit it to the count as having been completed by Mozart to collect the final payment. Joseph von Eybler was one of the first composers to be asked to complete the score and had worked on a number of movements but felt unable to complete the remainder and gave the manuscript back to Constanze Mozart. The task was then given to another composer, Franz Xaver Sussmayr. Sussmayr borrowed some of Eybler's work in making his completion, added his own orchestration to other movements and added several new movements which a Requiem Mass would normally comprise. He then added a final section by adapting the opening two movements which Mozart had written to the different words which finish the Requiem Mass, which according to both Sussmayr and Mozart's wife, was done according to Mozart's directions. The completed score, initially by Mozart but largely finished by Sussmayr, was then dispatched to Count Walsegg complete with a counterfeited signature of Mozart dated 1792. Despite the controversy over how much of the music is actually Mozart's, the commonly performed Sussmayr version has become widely accepted by the public, and is considered one of Mozart's finest compositions. The Lacrimosa (Latin for weeping/tearful), also a name that derives from Our Lady of Sorrows, a title given to The Virgin Mary, is part of the Dies Irae sequence in the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass. Its text comes from the Latin 18th and 19th stanzas of the sequence. Lacrimosa dies illa Qua resurget ex favilla Judicandus homo reus. Huic ergo parce, Deus: Pie Jesu Domine, Dona eis requiem. Amen. Full of tears will be that day When from the ashes shall arise The guilty man to be judged; Therefore spare him, O God, Merciful Lord Jesus, Grant them eternal rest. Amen. The piece begins piano on a rocking rhythm in 12/8, intercut with quarter rests, which will be reprised after two bars, on Lacrimosa dies illa (This tearful day). Then follows a diatonic progression, in disjointed eighth-notes on the text resurget (will be reborn), then legato and chromatic on a powerful crescendo. The music is forte by bar 8, at which point Mozart's contribution to the movement is interrupted by his death. Süssmayr brings the music to a reference of the Introit and ends on an Amen cadence. Discovery of a fragmentary Amen fugue in Mozart's hand has led to speculation that it may have been intended for the Requiem. Indeed, many modern completions (such as Levin's) complete Mozart's fragment. Some sections of this movement are quoted in the Requiem mass of Franz von Suppé, who was a great admirer of Mozart. Ray Robinson, the music scholar and president (from 1969 to 1987) of the Westminster Choir College, suggests that Süssmayr used materials from Credo of one of Mozart's earlier masses, Mass in C major, K. 220 Sparrow in completing this movement.

Mvt.3 Rex tremundae summary A descending melody composed of dotted notes is played by to announce the Rex tremendae majestatis (King of tremendous majesty, i.e., God), who is called by powerful cries on the syllable Rex during the pauses. For a surprising effect, the Rex syllables fall on the second beats of the measures, even though this is the weak beat. The melodies adoptthe dotted rhythm, forming what Wolff calls baroque music's form of topos of the homage to the sovereign,or, more simply put, that this musical style is a standard form of salute to royalty, or, in this case, divinity. This movement consists of only 22 measures, but this short stretch is rich in variation: homophonic writing and contrapuntal passages alternate many times and finish on a quasi-unaccompanied choral cadence, landing on an open D chord (as seen previously in the Kyrie).
