The Traditional Latin Requiem Mass is a musical genre that brought the Western musical tradition important works ranging from composers such as Mozart, Faure, Berlioz, Verdi, Palestrina and Victoria. This is a newly composed setting of the Latin text of the Requiem Mass from Stephanie Martin, a master of the choral idiom. This setting of the Requiem has solid choral writing, beautiful melody and rich harmonies. It is that sort of sensuous music that is choirs love to sing, and which stirs the hearts of listeners.In 2017, All Souls’ Church in San Diego, California, commissioned Martin to composed a Requiem for All Souls. Martin’s Requiem for All Souls was premiered on Souls’ Day, November 2, 2017, and dedicated in loving memory of The Reverend Edward Kellogg. On the day before the premiere, Chris Jennewein of the Times of San Diego wrote: This is the first major musical commission in the church’s history, but follows the centuries-long tradition of churches commissioning new music from significant composers. ‘Today many people don’t realize that the music commissioned by churches for performance during Masses, holy days, and other ceremonies forms a part of what we now call classical music,’ says Ruben Valenzuela, who is All Souls’ Director of Music and will conduct the premiere. So many of the landmark works we still love and perform were in many cases commissioned by churches or other religious institutions. Martin’s 25-minute Requiem for All Souls is set to the traditional Latin text of the Requiem Mass and will be performed a cappella. Valenzuela describes it as a work of pure, beautiful vocal music grounded in traditional church music.

This is an anthem for SATB (with divisi) and organ. It was written for All Souls Day, but would also be suitable for funerals and memorials or as a concert piece. The latin text may be sung by a bass (or baritone) soloist or small group. If performed in a large church, try placing the soloist away from the choir to get a distant effect. This can work to really good effect. Piano may be used. In this case the octave semibreve Ds at the start should be played without the ties. Duration 4'30.

Brahms said he wanted to write a Requiem to comfort the living, not for the souls of the dead. This arrangement is of the first movement, which is based on one of the Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount: Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted. The movement begins hushed and solemn, but slowly transforms its somber mood into music which conveys a sense of peace and comfort. This arrangement is suitable for any church service or concert. Christopher Pardini's Requiem aeternam is a solemn and harmonically engaging composition for STB voices with viola or cello and organ. It begins with an ethereal statement of the E minor theme with words from the Requiem Mass, first by TB voices and then repeated with treble voices. (One might consider using children's voices.) A viola interlude leads into the middle section in E major, where voices gently but insistently entreat God to shine perpetual light on the dead. The original theme, this time with voices at pianissimo, returns after another viola interlude. The viola takes up the prayer theme in the end, sparingly underscored by voices, and harmonies gently move back to E major to accompany the choir's final, hopeful Amen. A substitute part for cello is also available.

Written in December of 2020 for Be near me when my light is low, a collaborative Requiem by the composers of Inversion Ensemble (a conductor-composer collaborative based in Austin, Texas), the Offertory movement text is a modern English rendition of the Offertory (“Domine Jesu Christe†and “Hostias et preces tibi, Domineâ€) from the traditional Latin Requiem Mass. The Offertory is introduced by a light, flowing sixteenth note pattern in the righthand of the piano that is rhythmically repetitive and meditative. The voices then appear in unison at first, gradually beginning to divide into harmony as the piece progresses until at the word death they fall back into a stark, unaccompanied unison. The Archangel Michael appears in the section that follows, leading the souls of the faithful to eternal light as the music crescendos and moves through an accelerando, ending on a triumphant C major chord on the final repetition of eternal light. A motive of assurance that this light is promised to the faithful for all eternity is presented in E-flat major, a motive that will reappear in the finale of the piece. The flowing sixteenth notes and harmonic shifts of the first section return at Sacrifices and praises we offer you, O Lord. The movement concludes with a fugue in the victorious key of C major, once again offering comfort to Christ's faithful ones through the assurance of heavenly light for all eternity.
