A solo piano work commissioned by Palau de la Música Catalana and funded by the Barcelona Creació Sonora to be premiered on the 28th September 2022 at Palau de la Música Catalana (Barcelona) by Alex Alguacil. Scenes is a musical composition comprising three distinct pieces: Loops, Resonances, and Phase. These works can be programmed independently or played consecutively without interruption to create a seamless, unified musical experience.Each of the three pieces draws its melodic inspiration and thematic ideas from Los Requiebros, the opening composition of Enrique Granados' Goyescas. In Los Requiebros, Granados skillfully incorporates a traditional Valencian tune known as La Tirana del TrÃpili to depict a romantic scene inspired by one of Francisco Goya's paintings. Goya's art served as a profound influence on Granados during this period.In Scenes, the aforementioned Valencian tune, along with various other elements rooted in the Spanish-Catalan piano school of Granados' era, is explored, dissected, reassembled, and blended with original ideas. This creative process results in three unique acoustic scenes where the central musical material is manipulated through looping, resonating, and phase shifting techniques. The resulting compositions provide a fresh perspective on the source material, offering a captivating journey through the world of sound, evoking a sense of timelessness and innovation.Scenes invites the audience to explore the rich heritage of Spanish-Catalan music while embracing contemporary approaches to composition and performance. Estas pueden ser programadas de manera independiente o tocarse de manera consecutiva sin interrupciones para crear una experiencia musical unificada y fluida.Cada una de las tres piezas extrae su inspiración melódica y sus ideas temáticas de Los Requiebros, la obra de apertura de Goyescas de Enrique Granados. Resonances was commissioned by the Tennessee Music Teachers Association and premiered at that organization’s 2003 meeting in Nashville by Mark E. Hussung. The three movements bear titles that describe the compositional process at work in each. The first movement, Radically Disparate Segment Accretion, is made up of five contrasting segments that are added to each other, then subtracted from each other, more or less. Descending Scheme Transformation is based on a simple descending theme that is heard virtually through the entire movement in one form or another. The final movement, Unrelenting Metrical Interferences, is thus titled because of the extensive use of syncopation.

By allowing the strings to take on the vocal role, I was able to explore deeper resonances within the ensemble, emphasizing the rich harmonies and subtle dynamic shifts. The original mood of contemplation is maintained, with the orchestra expanding the emotional depth and allowing for a broader interpretation of the work's serene beauty.This arrangement offers a fresh perspective on Vivaldi’s sacred music, highlighting the timeless elegance of his writing for modern audiences, while staying true to the essence of the original composition.

Dynamics and other markings are not only crude, but imply there is only one interpretation of the piece. There should be significant development of dynamics, tempo and colour within my pieces, but I leave this to the interpretation of the player.Notwithstanding the above, the fingerings are important. My pieces are 'guitaristic' in that certain notes need to be played at specific places on the fretboard in order to exploit resonances or harmonies only available when playing them there.

Folksongs are traditional songs of the people, that have been culturally ingrained into civilisation. This arrangement of Scarborough Fair, a well-known English folksong, is the first in my Folksong Echoes’ Series, which attempts to re-imagine traditional folksongs in a more fragmented, but still beautiful way. I use the term ‘fragmented’ because it is essentially the main approach to these arrangements. You will hear glimpses of the tune in the form of melodic motifs, clusters, and sustained resonances, which are beautifully imagined through the sustain pedal of the piano. Overall, these fragments make up ‘echoes’ which allude to the concept of something being there but also not quite being there, a bit like the pieces that make up a jigsaw puzzle.Duration: approximately 3’20’’Composition year: 2021

Colores de un otoño incipiente Declina el dÃa. Cobriza de hojarasca, la tierra aguarda. Inocencia Apergaminada por las largas vigilias. Frugal ante la desmesura, Se resignó a lo inconcluso Y dejó un hueco de luz en esta nada. Colors of an incipient autumn The day declines. Coppery with old leaves, the earth awaits. Innocence Parched by the long vigils. Frugal in the face of excess, He resigned himself to the unfinished And he left a hole of light in this nothingness. Such a poem alludes without great subtlety to decadence and aging. The title Apergaminada por las largas vigilias is taken from a poem by Pedro Lastra. Y dejó un hueco de luz en esta nada comes from a micropoem attributed to Alejandro Güerri, written in memory of Javier Adúriz. This seventh piece, transparent and delicate, pictures a being definitively transformed into light. The idea of desmesura (excess) arises from the prologue by Javier Adúriz to his book Solos de conciencia (1985): Faced with the excess of death, consciousness perceives the weakness of its willful affirmation, the one for which it feels itself unique and safe from all decrepitude. Adúriz was one of the fundamental figures in my artistic training. And apparently he still is. Musically, this cycle of works abounds in harmony of chords by fourths in a minimalist neoclassical aesthetic. The way of working texturally with the piano as an instrument - my instrument - highlights the pedal, the resonances, the third dimension of sound. These seven somewhat abstract pieces were composed at the end of 2019 in and around Bremen, in several cases with my new-born daughter Laura in my arms, trying to put her at to sleep and staying asleep. This explains the cautious nature of the music and its prudent dynamics that never reach a mezzoforte. There were several unsuccessful attempts to release this recording (initially planned for September 2020, at the beginning of autumn in the northern hemisphere). Finally, the album will be released (on Spotify and other streaming platforms) on 22 April 2022, coinciding with what would be my father's 103rd birthday. It is also autumn but in the southern hemisphere. Recorded on a Steinway B grand piano (serial number: 568208) at the Musikschule Bremen (Germany) with two Neumann KM-184 microphones. Recording and mastering technician: Alexander Derben. This is an advanced intermediate solo guitar piece - around Trinity Grade 6. You can find a performance on YouTube.My scores are intentionally devoid of expressive and dynamic markings (even tempo indications). Dynamics and other markings not only seem crude to me, but also imply there is only one interpretation of the piece. There should be significant development of dynamics, tempo and colour within my pieces, but I leave this to the interpretation of the player.Notwithstanding the above, my fingerings are important. My pieces are 'guitaristic' in that certain notes need to be played at specific places on the fretboard in order to exploit resonances or harmonies only available when playing them there.

It is dedicated to Marisa Green.The work is inspired by a poem (Desiring the Solicitude of Rain) by American poet Kathleen Wakefield. The landscape of rich imagery in Wakefield's poem drives the extra-musical inspiration of this work. Musical material from the earlier vocal work is re-imagined in a purely orchestral context.Wakefield's poem contains images and messages of love and journey amidst the desire for the coming of rain. It is these ideas which provided the poetic conception of the work. Throughout the piece, the winds and brass play an extensive lyric and melodic role. A strand of singing lyricism runs throughout. Instruments are always exploring and highlighting theresonances in melodic and contrapuntal lines of other instruments. The work is cast in three sections (slow-fast-slow) plus a coda. The opening section begins with a forceful gesture that returns throughout the work as a signal. A melodic idea (containing the basic material of the work) is presented in the clarinet and it is developed throughout the rest ofthe section. A faster section emerges in a burst of energy as instruments hocket off each other.The next section is marked slow, ritualistic. The strings create an otherworldly harmonic cloud of gradually shifting and overlapping harmonies. Through this cloud, bassoon, trumpet,and flute solos emerge. Finally, the opening music is recalled in the coda as the potential energy continues to build. I've found that music with autobiographical references has a particular expressive strength.I was in Finland once (performing at the World Tango Summit in Seinäjoki, 2011). The city of Seinäjoki is quite close to the Arctic Circle, so in summer the sun doesn't really set: instead of a night you have several hours of an eternal twilight.The feeling was that of a transition stopped in time, as a slow motion film of someone springing over a wide river. This can be a wonderful experience (and for me it was), but can be also unnatural to us, Latinamericans, used to the day is sun and night is no sun approach to life.Anecdotically, the temperature during these days in Seinäjoki was 31 Celsius. So my experience of Finland is that of a very warm place. I guess other persons have colder experiences. There are three versions of this piece: Piano solo (pedal all throughout, resonances) 7:24 Tibetan singing bowls 7:40 Electronic sounds (ambient) 7:50 The bowls version is recorded at A = 432 Hz. It consists of five movements in which the former has a simple, school sonata shape, with two well-identifiable themes, one ethereal based on sets of bells and harmonics and another choppy, contrasting, in parallel ninth intervals, which are developed and subsequently reexposed at the end of the movement.The second movement is a slow time when the resonance of arpeggiated sounds is important. As will happen in the fourth half, the music conveys a sense of freedom, almost improvisation resulting from its unsympted writing and the irregularity of the measure. The third is a Scherzo in which humorous character is accentuated by the rapid descending and ascending glissandi. No less grotesque is the contrasting quote of Gaspar Sanz's Spaniard played in a singular way as will be seen in the interpretation, suddenly interrupted by the glissandi. The fourth is another slow movement in which resonances are also the center. Here you resort to obtaining a particular, harmonic sound similar to the sound of a gong, by placing paper clip on the three boards of the guitar. The fifth and final time is live movement in the form of a purr in which the different episodes are quotes from the themes appeared in the previous movements. The player says about this work: Work dated in 1994, virtuoso and contrasting, of resounding accessibility, not intending to reach the audience using easy resources but an admirable capacity for communication, Gioco is divided into five movements in which varied colours and textures occur and almost all the abundant classical and contemporary timbric resources of the guitar are exploited with intelligence, (controlled challenges, blows on the board, metallic vibration of a clip...), In this work one of the outstanding findings of its author is the alternative use in the Scherzando of his contemporary language and two recognizable literal quotations of the Aragonese Baroque guitarist Gaspar Sanz, which appear softly in an ironic and evocative loudness. Justino Losada wrote this review:Gioco, represents a continuous game of sonorities of very rich timbric nuances as well as an exacerbated game of frets (such as in its 3rd movement Scherzando), and abundant contemporary resources such as the microtonal vicinity of the detuned passages or the blows on the box for our interpreter to show of his skills, a task that although complicated he knows how to perform perfectly coming out of all difficulties. Rebullida's language is not simple, but the composer is clearly aware of the difficulties to reach a large audience, and to do so he polishes his language by seeking an exchange between modern and ancient sonorities in a continuous game creating a climate of warm and direct communication.
