The music can be considered rather homophonic up to measure 41, after which the prayer is treated polyphonically. That was 27 years ago. I contacted Mr. Theel asking for permission to set his text to music and he agreed. After the music was written, it sat in my collection of original manuscripts until Imagine Music Publishing agreed to publish it. I believe performers will find Mr. Theel's words inspirational.This work is an SATB setting with piano accompaniment. I consciously kept it brief. Nothing to detract from the lyrics. Perform it with expression and the message will unfold.

Longfellow is a testament to viewing life in the most positive way, and not by dwelling on its hardships or past crises. Nowhere is it written that this life journey should or must be viewed in any negative way.Modulations that occur in several areas are meant to emphasize critical ideas of the poem, and the performers should take note of the melodic stress that occurs among the various parts (See measures 33 and 41). Dynamics are important in relaying the meaning of the text and should be observed, although the conductor should feel free to augment these whenever she or he deems it necessary. As always, relaying the meaning of the words through the music should always be considered the primary goal of the performance.

They are accessible to most students who have studied piano diligently for at least three to four years. Contained in these pieces are challenging techniques in rhythm, harmony, articulation, dynamics, notation, and even a challenge to hear and understand music that is not exclusively key based. However, more so than any other compositional facet, melody is always a primary concern in these pieces.Many of the pieces in Notebook for Piano have been performed by intermediate level students and by college music majors. I hope you find this collection satisfying.

In the most general sense, the poem urges the individual to remain confident, particularly when confronted by the most destructive situations. Considering the rhythmic aspect of the music, be especially careful when executing the sixteenth note figurations that they are perfectly in sync among all the vocal parts. Perform this piece with the utmost attention and expression given to the meaning of the poem.

Paulo Tanzini, former pastor of Church of the Assumption in Emerson, NJ, commissioned me to write a piece for the fiftieth anniversary of the building to be celebrated in mid-August of the same year during the recognition of Mary's Assumption. Although this was to be a fiftieth year jubilee, the parish had been in existence for many decades prior, and many of the choir members had been parishioners since the construction of the new building and some even before.Myidea was to ask the choir members to participate in this piece by expressing their thoughts regarding their devotion to Mary, and from their writing I would assemble their words into a lyric.Initially, A Prayer to Mary was composed as a unison/octave setting, after which I arranged it for SATB with piano accompaniment. Most important in the performance of this piece is to approach it with a generous amount of expression and rubato in several areas so that the meanings of the individual lyric phrases become meaningful and not just words.I have included chord symbols in the score for those who wish to personalize their own accompaniments; however, chord symbols do not, and in several cases cannot capture the exact content of the accompaniment. It would be beneficial to analyze the content of the written accompaniment before assuming that the chord symbols reflect the exact harmony.A Prayer To Mary can be appropriately performed during Mother's Day, the celebration of The Assumption of Mary in mid-August, as a communion meditation or any time during which special devotions are warranted.

USDAN is a summer camp for the arts located on Long Island, NY. The following is a brief description of the camp: Usdan opens up a world for children to joyfully express their creativity and develop their artistic skills.Each summer, we bring professional teachers and artists—actors, directors, playwrights, painters, sculptors, musicians, composers, dancers, poets, and novelists—to teach and collaborate with our campers ages 5 to 18 from Long Island and New York City. Set on 140 acres of natural beauty, Usdan is a welcoming and inclusive place within which campers have the freedom to build new friendships, explore nature, develop personal independence, and have fun, alongside their art-making.“In Springtime is scored for SA and piano. I was given the liberty of choosing the subject matter and writing the words as well as the music. While the piece is not exactly “a walk in the park vocally and harmonically for young people, their performance was magnificent.Several sections of the accompaniment are syncopated, and this can cause a bit of difficulty for the singers, but the rhythm is quite effective, as are the soprano “divisi sections where the harmony becomes three-part. Who doesn’t love springtime? Perform it joyfully!
