Ae Fond Kiss is perhaps the most popular love song by the great Scottish poetRobert ?Rabbie? Burns.
The poem (its fulltitle being Ae Fond Kiss and then we sever) is usually sung to themelody set here; the traditional Scottish tune 'Mo run an diugh mar an déthu'.
The text of the poem was inspiredby Burns? friendship with Agnes Maclehose of Edinburgh. Burns wrote the poemfor her in 1791 when she left Edinburgh to join her husband in Jamaica.
The beautiful words tell of thesadness of parting, and it is this sentiment that the player should try tocommunicate when performing Ae Fond Kiss.

Although Burns wrote the words of the song, he set them to a variation of an existing tune called The Hemp Dresser which dates from the 17th century or earlier. It is a lively jig which is arranged here for Wind Quintet. This wind quintet arrangement begins with oboe and bassoon playing the tune and bass line, almost exactly as they appeared in The Scots Musical Museum, published by James Johnson & Co in six volumes between 1787 and 1803. The other instruments all get the opportunity to play the melodic line in the ensuing 5 verses, as the arrangement gets more complex and fun. The arranger makes great use of the tritone; or devil’s interval as it is often known because of its unsettling presence. However, in this arrangement it merely adds to the fun and excitement.Great fun for all! ÂÂ

There are many theories about the meaning of the song, most of which are connected to the Jacobite Uprising of 1745. One interpretation based on the lyrics is that the song is sung by the lover of a captured Jacobite rebel set to be executed in London following a show trial. The heads of the executed rebels were then set upon pikes and exhibited in all of the towns between London and Edinburgh in a procession along the 'high road' (the most important road), while the relatives of the rebels walked back along the 'low road' (the ordinary road travelled by peasants and commoners).COMIN’ THRO’ THE RYEThe lyrics were written in 1782 by Robert Burns (1759–96) who put the words to the melody of the ‘Common' Frae The Town’, a variant of the tune to which 'Auld Lang Syne' is usually sung.THE BLUEBELLS OF SCOTLANDThe Bluebells of Scotland is the usual modern name for a Scottish folk song.
