O'Carolan's Lament, II. Tobin's Jig, and III. My Lagan Love. The work was recorded by flutist Leslie Marrs (Robert Fruehwald: Music for Flutes and Guitar) and by Linda Wetherill as part of the anthology New Music for Solo Alto or Bass Flute. These three short pieces were written for the New York flutist Linda Wetherill. In addition to being a great proponent of new music, Linda spent a number of years traveling the world performing and teaching. Much of that time was spent in Istanbul. While in Istanbul, Linda became interested in Turkish folk music and collected quite a few folk melodies. These pieces are based on some of the melodies she collected. While these preludes are based on actual folk melodies, they are not straightforward settings of folksongs. Instead, the folk melodies present a point of departure for a free development of melodic ideas. I chose to develop certain parts of the melodies extensively and left out other parts of the melodies all together. Still, I believe that someone familiar with the original folk songs will recognize the sources.

Hymntunes I contains deconstructed versions of three familiar Christmas hymns. The movements were deconstructed in the same way that much post-modern architecture or visual art is deconstructed. A deconstructivist building will have most of the elements of a traditional building. Some elements will be exaggerated (a window might be many times too large or too small) and some elements will be displaced (a doorway might be several feet from the wall, the roof might appear to float above the building). These preludes use similar techniques. Most of the elements of the original hymntunes are present but some are exaggerated, repeated many times, or used differently from the original. These chorale preludes use several unfamiliar techniques: slides between notes, arm vibrato, a doppler portamento, harmonics, and tremolos.

The composition of Anthems was begun in the summer of ’02. One of my projects that summer was to play through all of the Beethoven piano sonatas. I enjoyed playing the sonatas. While a few were well beyond my technique, most of them are accessible to pianists of average ability. It occurred to me that there was very little contemporary sonatas of this type. I set out to compose just such a sonata.

Versi is inspired by the music of the Italian Baroque composer Domenico Zipoli (1688-1726). Zipoli wrote many sets of Versi, short keyboard works intended for use in the mass. These works are charming, brief, and simple. Zipoli joined the Jesuits in 1716 and became a missionary in South America where he preached, composed and taught music to the natives. I imagined a probably impossible scenario: that Zipoli encountered, in the jungle, a music not unlike the Latin American music of today. There his Baroque style blended with the native music to produce a novel hybrid. Versi is the result of those impossible imaginings.

Robert Fruehwald #2165237. Published by Robert Fruehwald (A0.923701). I have a love-hate relationship with the Cesar Franck D Minor Symphony. It was the first large scale romantic work that I played as a member of a youth orchestra. I remember the thrill of being immersed in the overwhelming drama of the work. As I have returned to the piece over the years, I still love it, or rather I love parts of it. It is a very, very long work. It takes a while to get to the point. The point of the piece, to me, is the last movement. It is fast, exciting, maybe even joyous. The long, dark, angst-ridden build-up seemed profound to me as a teenager. I am less patient today. Now I wish Franck had simply started with the last movement. I decided to try rewriting the symphony myself. I would start with material from the last movement. I would use all of the basic musical material of the piece, but I would condense it down to ten to fifteen minutes of music. I had originally intended to leave the romantic character of the work intact. That intention didn't last very long. As I worked on the piece, it very quickly became more post-modern than romantic. I think that's fine. The profundity may be gone, but I think the piece is more fun this way. As I get older the scales of my life are tipping more and more toward fun and less and less toward profundity. It's kind of nice that, as I age, I see more fun ahead me even if that means I'm seeing profundity recede in the rear-view mirror.
