Make sure the melody is always prominent whichever instrument takes it. 'The Salley Gardens' is of Irish origin with words by W.B. Yeats. I have tried to create a rather dream-like atmosphere; the quaver passages should flow smoothly with the phrasing well observed. 'The Wraggle-Taggle Gypsies' should rollick along with good contrast between the slurred and staccato notes. 'The Water Is Wide', although of Scottish origin, was included in Cecil Sharpe's 'Folk Songs from Somerset'. It's in a contemplative style; again, make sure the melody line is never over-powered by the other instruments. 'Drunken Sailor' should be played with great humour, preferably after a few tots of rum!

Published by Sahale Studios (A0.1329920). Once there was an oboist who was a member of a chamber ensemble consisting of flute, oboe, cello, and, piano. The oboist was highly skilled; a virtouoso who could ornament without the slighest effort. They were notorious for doing so.One day during dress rehearsal, the oboist, familiar enough with the music began ornamenting and adding stylistic flourishes, becoming increasingly carried away with their part. It finally reaches a point where the others stop playing and let the oboe go completely overboard with a full cadenza. Not far into the solo, the oboe realizes everyone else has stopped playing and stops themself and the rehearsal continues. However, not much farther along, the oboist becomes carried away in their part again, resulting in the other musicians pausing again as the oboist proceeds into another cadenza passage before realizing the others have stopped again.The rehearsal continues, and they all get further along (due to the oboe simply not playing), but when the oboe plays the melody, the ornaments and finesse return in full display, and finally the piano cuts the oboe off. At the slightest hint of an ornament all the other musicians in the ensmeble join in and cut off the oboe. From this, the oboist sinks into low spirits.The rehearsal continues unabated through the next section, and when the oboist enters, they play their part as written, but the ornamentations begin creeping in again. But rather than admonish the oboist the others instead speed the music up into the recapitulation section and for the remainder of the piece and rehearsal they all go wild with flourishes and ornamentations of their own, bringing the piece to a rollicking and lively conclusion.

The song was originally recorded in 1969 as a B side for the then fictitious group Steam. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. The interpretation of this adage is that one always wants what someone else has instead of accepting one’s own uniqueness. During the movement, counterpoint is used to depict one instrument copying another. Towards the middle of the movement, tuba 2 eventually realizes its independence and states a bold melody of its own. The movement ends with the euphonium 1 playing its melody alone with pauses between the phrases as if looking over its shoulder wondering where the other musicians are. II. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. This setting represents a growing love despite the emptiness of being apart. Hollow intervals of fourths and fifths representing longing, occur at the beginning and end. A short love duet between two instruments occurs in the middle. III. Time flies when you are having fun. A rollicking six-eight meter is used to represent a children’s game of tag. There is a lot of alternation of short phrases as if one instrument is trying to tag the other and the other is trying to avoid being tagged. The dissonance and short accented notes represent taunting. IV. Every cloud has a silver lining. This movement is a prayer-like setting with alternation of minor and major harmonies representing the cloud and the silver lining respectively. V. He who hesitates is lost. This movement is very rhythmic and syncopated with the instruments alternating phrases in the manner of a call and response. It calls for split-second precision between the performers, therefore representing the adage. VI. A rolling stone gathers no moss. The last movement is a perpetual motion in a rolling six-eight meter. The musical ideas are very chromatic with the exception of main theme that appears first as a solo melody, then as several instruments together, and later as instruments in imitation. Towards the end, there are a few brief pauses and low accented notes as a life of activity has a few bumps along the way.
