String Orchestra - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1147810 Arranged by James M. Guthrie. 19th Century,Contest,Festival,Romantic Period,Standards,Thriller. 129 pages. Jmsgu3 #747963. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1147810). Composed in 1867, Mussorgskyâ??s Night on Bald Mountain is a tone poem inspired by the Russian legend of nocturnal revels on St. John's Night, involving a witches' Sabbath on Bald Mountain near Kiev. The piece is known for its high drama, dark textures, and bold harmonies, which Mussorgsky's colleagues considered excitingly expressive and raw. The work was unpublished and unrevised at the time of the composer's death, and his colleagues, including Rimsky-Korsakov, later revised it. The composition remains a powerful representation of Russian folk tradition. It is associated with the pagan festivities of the midsummer Slavic holiday, making it a significant piece in the history of Russian classical music. The legend of the nocturnal revels on St. John's Night in June on a hill called Lysa Hora near Kiev is a prominent Slavic tale that inspired Modest Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain. The legend tells of a demon, Chernobog, who leads the revels until a far-off church bell sounds disperse the Spirits of Darkness. This tale is associated with the pagan festivities of the midsummer Slavic holiday and is a significant part of Russian folklore and culture. Lysa Hora, meaning Bald Mountain or Barren Mountain, is a large wooded hill in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, near the confluence of the Dnipro and Lybid' rivers, and is the traditional site of the witch gatherings in Slavic folklore. The legend's themes of darkness, supernatural gatherings, and the triumph of light have made it a compelling source of inspiration for various artistic works, including Mussorgsky's musical composition.

Concert Band - Level 3 - SKU: A0.1023643 Composed by Ben Ledochowski. Contemporary,New Age. Score and parts. 31 pages. Ben Ledochowski #6217581. Published by Ben Ledochowski (A0.1023643). Far to the westernmost regions of Russia, and then farther still, there is a place known as theDancing Forest of Kaliningrad. It is a mysterious, otherworldly place where trees grow in tangles, knots, and other unfathomable shapes, a place described by local psychics as a point of conflict where great positive and negative forces collide. Due to its remarkable air of mystery, the forest has woven its way into the legends and folklore of the region. My personal favorite legend about it goes as follows: The Prussian prince Barty used to hunt in these forests. Chasing a Roe deer one day, heheard a wonderful tune, and as he came to a field, he saw a beautiful girl playing a lyre. She was a Christian and her name was Predislava. The prince proposed to her but she replied that she would marry only a man of her faith. Prince Barty agreed to become a Christian as long as she could prove the power of her invisible God was more powerful than the surrounding trees. Predislava played her lyre. Birds grew silent, and the trees started dancing. The prince then took a bracelet from his hand and gave it to her as a token of their betrothal. On this very spot, many years later, there grew the Dancing Forest. This piece is my homage to the Dancing Forest of Kaliningrad and all its associated legends. Premiered by the Santa Teresa High School Concert Band in May 2019, the work is scored for a concert band of intermediate size and skill level and is designed to help introduce high school musicians to modal music and unconventional key signatures. Furthermore, the piece is inspired by multiple rhythmic and harmonic elements of rock and folk music in an attempt to help bridge the gap between popular music and contemporary wind ensemble repertoire. Enjoy!

Downloadable, vocal/piano score. Duration 85 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q48824. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q48824). Russian.Shchedrin's concert opera 'The Enchanted Wanderer' has quickly taken a permanent place in the musical canon. Now the piano score of the successful and impressive work is being published. Deep Slavonic emotions and gripping virtuosity characterize both this piece and many other compositions by Shchedrin. Even if he has been a cosmopolitan for a long time, the Moscow-born composer nevertheless remains an originally Russian composer whose attachment to Russian music folklore and poetry has never been broken off. The text of this 'opera for the concert stage' is based on a legend by the great Russian narrator Nikolay S. Leskov and tells the story of an enchanted pilgrim. The dramatic action is told by three vocal soloists, large choir and orchestra in colourful musical pictures.2 (auch Altfl. u. Picc.) · 2 Blfl. · 2 (2. auch Engl. Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quartet Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone - Level 4 - SKU: A0.532734 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Paul Wehage. Baroque. 21 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #1917. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.532734). The Aria with 30 variations which form the work which is known as the « Goldberg » variations is one of the greatest works of Bach. It is his only work which uses the form of variations and through three series of ten variations each, it explores a myriad of musical genres and styles. The initial Aria, which seems to be rather trite and banal at the beginning of the work, is magnified through these transformations and the da capo at the end brings us back to the beginning, which has been changed by the musical journey itself. As a sort of musical « initiation », it has become a work which sparks the imagination and which creates an atmosphere all it’s own. The story of how the work came to be written has to come to us through Bach’s first biographer, Johann Nikolaus Forkel in 1805, seventy-five years after the death of Bach. It would seem that a certain Count Keyserlingk, the Russian Ambassador to the Court of Dresden, had difficulty sleeping and asked Bach to compose a work which his protégé, a harpsichord virtuoso by the name of Goldberg, could play in a salon near his bedroom to help him sleep in the evening. For this commission, Bach was to receive the largest fee of his life, a hundred louis d’or in a golden goblet. It would seem that this story is perhaps more of a legend than anything else, as no goblet was found in Bach’s estate at the end of his life and no documented proof of this story has been found. Goldberg was indeed a student of C. P. E Bach, Bach’s son and the son might have asked his father to write these works for his brilliant student. No manuscript for the Goldberg Variations exists, only a first edition corrected in the hand of Bach which contains certain tempo indications and other markings. The first edition also carried the following title: « Clavierübung, consisting of an Aria with diverse variations for the Harpsichord with two manuals composed for music lovers to refresh their spirits by J. S. Bach ». In this version for Saxophone Quartet, it is important to remember that Bach was writing for the harpsichord and not for the Piano-forte. Bach did indeed know of the Piano-forte and played one of the first instruments produced, but it would seem that he did not care much for this new instrument. To find something akin to the precise, clearly defined attacks of the harpsichord, precise articulation and clarity of sound must be the first priority. In general, even in the slowest movements, the attacks must take precedent over all other elements of performance. If the need for clarity of line and precision of attack is respected, the inherent musicality contained in the work should be evident, even in this new form.. As Bach himself transcribed many of his own works and those of others, I would like to hope that he would find this question to be interesting and the results to be surprising...

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quartet Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone - Level 4 - SKU: A0.532733 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Paul Wehage. Baroque. 22 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #1919. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.532733). Downloadable, vocal/piano score. Duration 15 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q23950. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q23950). Russian. This monodrama sums up the essential moments of the second scene from Act V of Shakespeare's tragedy Antony and Cleopatra in the Russian translation of Boris Pasternak. The conflict between life and death, between the power of love and the 'power drug' as motives for the suicide of the legendary beauty is transformed into a sensually ardent musical language which can bring out the tessitura of a dramatic soprano very effectively.

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 2 - SKU: A0.939415 Composed by Anatoly Lyadov. Arranged by Robert Debbaut. Children,Christmas,Romantic Period,Sacred. Score and parts. 15 pages. ROBERT DEBBAUT #6345487. Published by ROBERT DEBBAUT (A0.939415). Lyadov's music largely concerned the legends and folklore of olden Russia. This Christmas Carol from his Eight Russian Folk Songs, Op. 58, is a melody of the old tradition of Kolyadki, or house-to-house caroling common among the Ukrainian people. Much like our modern tradition of Halloween, children would travel door-to-door singing songs of the season and would be invited in from the cold for some warm dumplings, pastries and tea.

String trio - advanced - SKU: S9.Q11382 From the Opera Sadko. Composed by Nikolay Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov. Arranged by Fredo Jung and Fritz Kreisler. This edition: score and parts. Downloadable, Score and parts. Duration 4' 15. Schott Music - Digital #Q11382. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q11382). The Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844–1908) had a penchant for fairy tales and devoted himself to such stories at an early age: to the character of the seafarer and gusli player Sadko in an orchestral work, or to legendary Arabian figures in Antar, later especially in his symphonic suite Sheherazade of course. The subject of the wandering minstrel Sadko who would rather be a rich merchant was taken up again in the opera of the same title: Before going off to distant places, he asks three foreign merchants – a Varangian, a Venetian and an Indian – to tell him about their home countries. His famous Hindu song with an exotic touch was arranged by Fritz Kreisler for violin and piano – the present edition contains this charming piece in a version for string trio.
