Published by SheetMusicHub (A0.662483). This is a lead sheet style (melody/chords/form) notation of Salute d'Amour (Liebesgruß) Op. 12 by Edward Elgar. From Wikipedia: Elgar finished the piece in July 1888, when he was romantically involved with Caroline Alice Roberts, and he called it Liebesgruss ('Love's Greeting') because of Miss Roberts' fluency in German. On their engagement she had already presented him with a poem The Wind at Dawn which he set to music and, when he returned home to London on 22 September from a holiday at the house of his friend Dr. Charles Buck in Settle, he gave her Salut d'Amour as an engagement present. The dedication was in French: à Carice. Carice was a combination of his wife's names Caroline Alice, and was the name to be given to their daughter born two years later. It was published a year later by Schott & Co., a German publisher, with offices in Mainz, London, Paris and Brussels. The first published editions were for violin and piano, piano solo, cello and piano, and for small orchestra. Few copies were sold until Schott changed the title to Salut d'Amour with Liebesgruss as a sub-title, and the composer's name as 'Ed. Elgar'. The French title, Elgar realised, would help the work to be sold not only in France but in other European countries. The first public performance was of the orchestral version, at a Crystal Palace concert on 11 November 1889, conducted by August Manns. The first recording of that version was made in 1915 for The Gramophone Company with an orchestra conducted by the composer. As a violin-and-piano piece Salut d'Amour had been recorded for The Gramophone & Typewriter Ltd (predecessor to The Gramophone Company) as early as 1901 by Jacques Jacobs, leader/director of the Trocadero Restaurant orchestra. Auguste van Biene recorded a cello transcription in 1907..

He composed the short duo for violin and piano in 1888 as an engagement present for his piano student Caroline Alice Roberts, whom he then married the following year. The dedication ‘à Carice’ was derived from her initials. Since Alice spoke German very well, Elgar originally chose the title ‘Liebesgruß’. The publishers Schott, to whom he sold all rights for a one-off fee of just two guineas in 1888, changed the title to the French ‘Salut d’amour’ in order to exploit the sales potential. The present piano version (plate number 24787-2) was created by Elgar himself and was published by Schott in 1889 along with the editions for violin and piano and for small chamber orchestra. Later, without Elgar’s involvement, the piece was arranged and published for all possible instrumental combinations. Elgar was naturally annoyed that he did not benefit financially himself from this success and in a letter to Novello & Co. In 1897 wrote: ‘[Salut d’amour] which unfortunately I sold some years ago for a nominal sum, now sells well – I understand 3000 copies were sold in the month of January alone.’.

Composed in 1888 for his future wife Caroline Alice Roberts, the work became an enormous success early on. There are numerous arrangements – but the only versions for which the autograph manuscripts survive are those for Violin and Piano, Piano solo and Violoncello and Piano. Up to now there has only been an arrangement of the cello part made by the original publisher, presumably with Elgar’s approval. John Pinno #3115907. Published by John Pinno (A0.775438). An arrangement for flute and classical guitar of one of the English composer Edward Elgar's best-known works, Salut d'Amour. He wrote the piece for Caroline Alice Roberts, with whom Elgar was romantically involved, and presented the piece to Miss Roberts as an engagement present in 1888. My arrangement is for flute and guitar, however the melody instrument could easily be a violin. This is arranged in the key of E major, and the guitar part is pitched in D major, but the guitarist must use a capo at the second fret to bring that part up to E.
