French composer Jacques Leguerney (1906-1997) has been recognized for hisoutstanding oeuvre of songs for voice and piano, mostly composed upon poems of theFrench poets of the Pleiade. After his death, the Leguerney Estate decided to allow thepublication of his instrumental chamber music. These works, many of which werewritten in his early years, are valuable contributions to the French chamber musicrepertoire, representing the 20th century from its early years through World War II.This Trio was composed in 1928, but not performed until December 3, 1932. Therespected French musicians Hortense de Sampigny (violinist) and Jacques Serres(cellist) gave its first and, as far as we know, only performance along withLeguerney’s friend and mentor, Thérèse Cahen, at the piano. The concert includingthis work was organized by the Société Musicale Indépendante at the concert hall ofthe Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris. A review, in the Journal des débâts, reads:“We do not know this composer. Judging from his composition, whose variegatedstyle reminds us of [Cesar] Franck, of Maurice Ravel and of Spanish dances, he mustbe quite young.â€The same month as this performance, Leguerney’s father, Marcel Leguerney, died. Atthis point, he interrupted his musical activity in order to take over his father’s businessto support his mother and sister. He was not able to resume musical composition until1940, when the outbreak of the war led him to close the business.This edition is based upon two autograph manuscript sources of the full score, as wellas copyist’s parts for the violin and ‘cello. His first completed sketch as well as hisfinal copy are in the Leguerney archives. The parts, made by a copyist, were obviouslyused for a performance, and contain suggested phrasing, as well as bowings (whichwe have not reproduced). We surmise that the violin and ’cello parts were used for thefirst performance. We also think that Thérèse Cahen must have kept her piano score,as the copyist's score of it was not found with the other parts.We have added rehearsal numbers, and corrected a few notational mistakes in themanuscript.We would like to thank Jean Libermann, cellist, and Marion Larigaudrie, violinist,for their advice in the preparation of this edition.

The music reflects and amplifies my own subjective responses to the artworks.The movements are organised in pairs, circling out from a still centre – No Woman, No Cry. The title for this centrepiece comes from Chris Ofili’s moving portrait of Doreen Lawrence, the mother of a teenager murdered in an unprovoked racist attack. As well as this specific reference, the artist intended the painting to be read as a universal portrayal of melancholy, solace, and grief. The two segments flanking No Woman, No Cry complete the central triptych. Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks explores loneliness and isolation, while Grayson Perry’s #Lamentation is a meditation on remembrance and the transience of life. In contrast to the rest of Wynwood Walls, the music here is dark and introspective.I want my time with you is a giant neon sign designed by Tracey Emin for St. Pancras Station, London. Selfie with Sunflowers is an essay written by Julian Barnes about our over-familiarisation with Van Gogh’s iconic sunflower paintings. The music is sentimental, bordering on schmaltz and kitsch. Sunflower Seeds and Infinity Room are a pair of moto perpetuo scherzos inspired by the minimalist installations of Ai Weiwei and Yayoi Kusama respectively. The opening section, Bathers at Asnières, suggests Seurat’s iconic painting, while the finale, Seurat’s Bathers, evokes Howard Hodgkin’s reworking of the Seurat using a blaze of vivid colours.The title of the quintet is borrowed from the Wynwood art district of Miami – an area characterised by the hundreds of colourful street murals which decorate the walls of old warehouses in the neighbourhood. In performance, the artworks can be projected onto a screen behind the ensemble.Wynwood Walls s'appuient sur 9 œuvres d'art dont les titres prêtent leurs noms aux 9 sections connectées du quintette. Regarded as the most significant French composer and poet of the 14th century, Guillaume de Machaut was the central figure of the ars nova style in late medieval music. The three vocal pieces included in this collection are two rondeaux Ma fin est mon commencement, Rose, liz, printemps, verdure along with the motet Je suis aussi com cils qui est ravis. An additional curiosity, the iconic rondeau Ma fin est mon commencement (My end is my beginning) has a very intricate form built on palindromic form; while one voice reads the line from left to right, the other uses the same line in the opposite direction. Both voices meet in the middle of the piece, thus creating a mirror-symmetric form. While maintaining the principal upper part vocal, my arrangement relegates the two additional voices to the guitar.Considéré comme le compositeur et poète français le plus important du XIVe siècle, Guillaume de Machaut était la figure centrale du style ars nova dans la musique de la fin du Moyen Âge. Les deux voix se rencontrent au milieu de la pièce, créant ainsi une forme symétrique en miroir. Tout en conservant la partie supérieure vocale principale, mon arrangement relègue les deux voix supplémentaires à la guitare.
