Published by JB Linear (A0.582045). Samuel Scheidt's Praise to You, Jesus Christ (Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ SSWV 135, 1624) set for double reed quartet by John Gibson. This was originally written for organ and includes a number of variations of the melody (Choralis). At the beginning is the version found in the German Lutheran Hymnal of 1912 which introduces the tune. As is usual for music of this period, the parts are rather independent and require careful counting! The hymn tune is found in different voices in each variation. This was music written to be played at Christmas. It is set for two oboes, English horn, and bassoon. Depending on the tempo, this is not difficult music, but it is best not to play too slowly!

Samuel Scheidt's Galliard Battaglia composed around 1621, has become one of the most recognized works in the brass quintet repertoire. This secular work was originally written for five viols. The Galliard dance style, very popular at the time serves as a perfect "foil" for the music's echoing back-and-forth fanfares and brilliant scales.
Neal Bennett of iTromboni has done a great job of arranging this music for Trombone quintet of 2 altos (possible on tenor also), 2 tenors & bass, playable by advanced performers. Length is about 2 minutes.

Brilliantly scored by Dr. Karl Hinterbichler of the Arizona Brass Quintet and well known Low Brass pedagogue. Instrumentation is for 2 Trumpets in Bb (Trumpet 1 doubles on Bb piccolo ), Horn, Trombone and Tuba. The work is for advanced groups and shows plenty of technique and flash. A great piece for an encore.

So then, what have composers been up to for the last 430 years?! I jest, but this piece is terrific. Be advised, the 'runs' are modal, in that the 7th degree is usually NOT just a semitone under the 8th/1st, but a whole tone. A bit like bagpipe music, in our day.
