Brass Ensemble Horn - Level 3 - SKU: A0.919038 Composed by Traditional Scottish Melodies. Arranged by L.C. Harnsberger. Celtic,Contemporary,Folk,Irish,Wedding. Score and parts. 23 pages. LCH Music #6426577. Published by LCH Music (A0.919038). This arrangement of Scottish traditional songs includes three iconic Scottish melodies: Bluebells of Scotland, Turn Again, Thou Fair Elisa, and Annie Laurie. The long soaring melodies and bagpipe-style drones of these songs work beautifully for horn quartet. These arrangements are ideal for weddings, preludes, funerals, and any recital. The origins of Scottish traditional music date back to at least the late Middle Ages, with songs passed down orally until many of the songs were published in collections in the 18th century. Scotland’s National Poet Robert Burns (1759-1796) famously collected Scottish folk songs and adapted many of the melodies to include his poetry. Today, elements of Scottish traditional music are found in epic film soundtracks such as Braveheart, Mary Queen of Scots, and Rob Roy, as well as classical symphonic works including Mendelssohn’s Scottish symphony. Bluebells of Scotland was most famously used by Arthur Pryor in his piece Blue Bells of Scotland for solo trombone and band. There are a few different versions of the melody Turn Again, Thou Fair Elisa, but the melody Robert Burns used (as published in the 1903 edition of The Songs of Robert Burns) is arguably the most beautiful. The timeless song Annie Laurie describes the ill-fated romance between Scottish soldier William Douglas and Annie Laurie, the young daughter of a British aristocrat. The music is often attributed to Lady John Scott (1810-1900).

Choral Choir,Choral (SAB) - Level 2 - SKU: A0.1357822 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Todd Marchand. Christian,Folk,Sacred,Traditional. 5 pages. Con Spirito Music #942325. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1357822). “Holy Spirit, Faithful Guide†pairs a text by Marcus Morris Wells (1815-1895) with the Scottish/Irish folk melody “WILD MOUNTAIN THYME.â€Little is known of Wells, who was converted to Christianity as a youth at a mission in Buffalo, New York and spent most of his life near Hartwick, New York as a farmer and maker of farm implements. “Holy Spirit, Faithful Guide†appears to be his single, memorable hymn; according to the website hymnary.org, it has appeared in 675 hymnals since its publication in 1858.The tune used as the basis of this arrangement is known variously as “Wild Mountain Thyme,†“Purple Heather,†and “Will Ye Go, Lassie, Go?†and is a variant of the song “The Braes of Balquhither†by Scottish poet Robert Tannahill (1774–1810) and Scottish composer Robert Archibald Smith (1780–1829), adapted by Belfast musician Francis McPeake (1885–1971) into “Wild Mountain Thyme.†This simple folk melody is ideally suited to the simple, personal sentiment of Wells’ text. ©Copyright 2024 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 2 - SKU: A0.828270 Arranged by Greg Link. A Cappella,Folk. Octavo. 4 pages. Greg Link #6083183. Published by Greg Link (A0.828270). With a beautiful melody shared across the choir, this is a tranquil arrangement of the traditional Scottish folk song 'The Water is Wide' (O Waly, Waly). The piece incorporates a calm, lilting choral accompaniment underneath the popular tune which can be sung either as a solo or in small groups if required. Written for a cappella SSATB, the score also includes a useful chord chart for piano or guitar which can be used as a rehearsal aid or in performance too if needed. Perfect as a choral folk arrangement alongside other folk songs or as a peaceful contrast to more upbeat numbers, this piece is ideal for high school choirs or a cappella groups and would be useful for exploring a blended choral sound and long sustained phrases. Arranged by Greg Link, a London-based professional singer, arranger and workshop leader.Duration: 2:10

Organ - Level 3 - SKU: A0.1438246 Composed by Phil Lehenbauer. Arranged by Phil Lehenbauer. Celtic,Classical,Irish,Sacred,Spiritual,Traditional. Score. 5 pages. Phil Lehenbauer #1018295. Published by Phil Lehenbauer (A0.1438246). The tune O Waly, Waly is an old Scottish tune, known best by the secular text of The water is wide. In church use, there is a wide variety of texts used, including When Love Is Found, The Gift of Love, and Though I May Speak with Bravest Fire. This peaceful setting will serve as a gentle prelude or a meditive offertory, with an original melody interspersed with the hymn tune, which is clearly stated. It was written and composed on a two manual instrument.

Its diversity reflects the small regional and cultural spaces of Switzerland. Influences from other European countries have also shaped this kind of music since the early 19th century. Polka and Mazurka have their roots in Poland, the Scottish in Scotland. The music has been passed on by word of mouth or has been written down in musicians’ notebooks.Between 1940 and 1960, the ethnomusicologist Hanny Christen travelled through Switzerland and collected thousands of melodies from the period between 1800 and 1960. The musicians played or sang in front of her. Some permitted her to write off their own hand-written dance booklets in full. In 1956, Hanny Christen began to record this music with a tape recorder. It is thanks to her that over 12,000 instrumental dance movements of Switzerland and many other pieces of tradition (costumes, biographies, musical instruments etc.) were saved from being forgotten. The instruments used in traditional folk music vary depending on the type of dance and region. Flutes are more or less non-existent. The author would like to fill a gap with this publication. She has therefore adapted one folk dance per canton from the Hanny Christen-collection* for two flutes. The pieces from the cantons of Basel City, Thurgau and Geneva do not come from this source, though. The melodies from the other 23 cantons are taken unchanged from the collection. The second voice was not always composed quite traditional. The melody follows - if possible - a contrapuntal melody of its own and is directed to the flute (difficulty grade 3 +).The editor, Helene Schulthess, is a flutist with a wide repertoire. She lives in Switzerland. She performs as a soloist, makes chamber music and is active as a music teacher. She is involved in various musical projects (www.helene-schulthess.ch).* Swiss Folk Music Collection. The dance music of Switzerland of the 19th and first half of the 20th century. From the estate of Hanny Christen. Edited by Fabian Müller under the auspices of the Society for Folk Music in Switzerland (GVS/SMPS). Music print. Mülirad, Zürich 2002.
