Jahrhundert der erste Opernstoff der Musikgeschichte. Der junge Komponist Benjamin Schweitzer hat ihn 2005 nach dem Libretto des Barockdichters Martin Opitz neu vertont. Nach der erfolgreichen Uraufführung fertigte Schweitzer von der vorletzten, zentralen Szene seiner Kammeroper eine berückende Version für den Konzertsaal an. Nach Dafnes tödlicher Verwandlung in einen Lorbeerbaum singen zwei Soprane, die zuvor als Dafne und Venus zu hören waren, einen traurig-elegischen Abgesang, begleitet von Violine, Viola und Schlagzeug. Schweitzer hat von Abgesang auch eine Fassung für Sopran und Klarinette geschrieben, die noch stärker wirkt: Das Blasinstrument verkörpert gleichsam die verstummte, hölzerne Dafne.

'African Patchwork' was created for the European 'Albert Schweitzer Year 2013' in remembrance of the foundation of the hospital in Lambaréne 100 years ago (1913). The organ sound, thought of as an ideal here, is the typical 'Albert Schweitzer sound': romantic, soft diapasons and string parts, hardly any mixtures, cymbals and tongues. This dark fundamental sound is joined by the djembé with its richness of high harmonics and its ability of modulation (the best-known of the African drums can be used in different sizes). Depending on the percussionist's creativity, the percussion part, notated in a quite rudimentary way, can be extended by various playing techniques, drum changes and pitch modulations of the drumhead. The notated percussion part can also be used as a basis for intuitive and improvisational playing.

Hölderlin’s late lyrics offer a certain riveness between equation, lunatic bursts and a dissociated smoothness. This ‘riveness’ can be found in the work’s concentrated character, which combines fragile colours of piano and flute, an eruptive climax and exactly organized lines and motives. During the thorough revision of the score, 17 years after the composition of the primary version, I tried to preserve the character of the piece with its strong influences from Alban Berg’s expressionistic style, but to accentuate the musical ideas of the work more exactly and subtly at the same time. One of the most bodacious episodes in the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic tells how Joukahainen challenges the old, wise singer Vainamoinen to a competition, during which Vainamoinen sings him up to his neck into the swamp. This scene, combining stunning and comical elements, is a great subject for a musical composition, but also holds a certain risk: it would perhaps be too obvious to depict it through an abundant, romantically expressive cantilena. This would indeed be quite dull and conventional – instead, Sumpfgesang is based on the imagination of Vainamoinen’s chant and is anything but melodical (in a traditional sense) and ostensibly clamant. The paradoxical idea of the piece could rather be described as a 'chant without melody', characterised by an inner tension, power and diversity as well as a fragile and bizarre musical language in parts which avoids everything superficially 'melodic' yet still creates a 'breathing‘ dramaturgy and suspense. The quintet has largely been split into even smaller instrumental units, but there is never a single voice which dominates – in fact, the few solos are the most sparse episodes of the composition. The sections are often marked by clear cuts and harsh contrasts rather than smooth transitions, but the musical language is also colourful and sophisticated in parts, building more and more tension which culminates in an unexpectedly climactic tutti. Nausea (lat., seasickness, disgust) – Nenia (greek/lat., folksong, elegy, magical song): Two similar sounding terms, which offer, based on their ambiguity, lots of space to musical connotations. These subtitles of the two movements refer to a background idea of the piece – to bring musical gestures of anger on the one, mourning and desperation on the other hand together as close as possible. In both cases there are drudgingly dragged blocks of sound, circulating crumbles of motives, melodic fragments sometimes even reduced to single notes…. Entschlackt [Piece in Two Parts] resulted from an attempt to write music that is clear, precise and concentrated without being superficially ’simple‘. The ‘purged’ or ‘cleansed‘ character of the piece is noticeable in its sound – using a combination of instruments that produces rather distinct colours – as well as in its form. Each possible combination of the four instruments from solo to quartet is arrayed in short sections (except for a few overlapping passages). The two movements are quite asymmetrical: the first one’s character is almost thoroughly expectant and preparative; however, the second, flashing by quite rapidly, does not provide an ‘adequate‘ continuation. The addition “Piece in Two Parts†in the title, the line-up, the bipartite form and also certain musical details imply a reference to the later works of Stefan Wolpe. Benjamin Schweitzer.

The chiaroscuro-technique developed by painters of the Italian renaissance served to intensify contrasts and effects of optical depth. In Klar/Obskur, I tried to transfer the general idea of this technique on the rather unusual instrumentation of two double-reed woodwinds and piano. On the one hand, a clear, well articulated playing is characteristic for these instruments, on the other hand, they have an often underestimated potential of „twilight: air-sounds and fragile, shady colours have a especially attractive when being produced by double-reed instruments (which are often, and superficially regarded as being less capable of differentiated sounds than flute or clarinet). The piano, too, has a broad bandwidth of possibilities between percussive and delicate playing to complement the woodwinds which, in return, can absorb and continue the fading piano sounds. The beginning introduces the two contrasting elements that form the basic material for the piece: a clear, sharp chord, followed by fragile, dim sounds. The changes between these elements as well as their combination and amalgamation produce an enormous spectrum of colours and gesture. After this „motto-like opening follow four quite clearly separated short sections, each of them being characterised by a well-defined texture: a partly almost imperceptible air-sound passage, a short sequence of microintervallic notes, a burst of virtuosity and a recourse to the fragile sounds of the beginning. The second, longer main part consists of three sections merging subtly into each other: a short unisono-passage, marked elastic [federnd], is being dissolved into its basic elements; from these remainders, a confrontation of low, ‚arcane‘ bassoon and piano sounds and a strongly ornamented melodic line of the oboe emerges, leading to a short but powerful climax. The piece is concluded by an extended, relaxed epilogue, containing a short piano solo and a duet of oboe and bassoon and, finally, a quotation of the „elastic character of the middle section.
