The constellation Sculptor represents the sculptor’s studio with a table, mallet and two chisels lying beside a carved head. It is one of the fourteen southern constellations named by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille. It contains some interesting deep sky objects such as the Sculptor Galaxy which was discovered by Caroline Herschel in 1783, who had a career first as a soprano and then as an astronomer. She was the first professional female astronomer, and (along with her brother William) discovered several comets and nebulae. They were working together when he discovered the planet Uranus. Like the other Lacaille constellation pieces, this one uses a twentieth century musical style. This Intermediate Piano Solo is based on a blues chord progression and uses the blues scale. In the improvisation section in the middle feel free to use some or all of the notes of the blues scale for your melody line, and if you like you can add texture to the left hand chords by comping on rhythmic patterns. Please choose your own dynamics. Caelum, the Sculptor, an Intermediate Piano Duet uses weights on the black keys to create sympathetic vibrations of the strings. As a sculptor uses the chisel to chip away the stone or wood from a block thus changing the shape of the material, so the players in removing and replacing the blocks from the keys alter the sound of the music. As indicated, sometimes listen (for a bar) to the sympathetic vibrations. Sometimes remove weights to hear the change in sound. Both duet players need to carefully lift and replace the blocks silently. Cristóbal Oudrid y Segura was a Spanish pianist, composer of zarzuelas and conductor. He was the son of Cristóbal Oudrid y Estarón, born in Madrid in 1793, a musician in the Napoleonic troops stationed in Badajoz, and director of the National Militia's band from 1825, and Antonia Segura González, born in Badajoz in 1801. He was married to Vicenta Muñoz Vallejo, a native of the same city. As a composer, he is remembered for revitalizing the genre, for pieces in his zarzuelas El molinero de Subiza and El postillón de la Rioja, and for the piece El sitio de Zaragoza, originally the incidental music he composed for the eponymous drama by Juan Lombía. In 1851, together with Joaquín Gaztambide, Rafael Hernando, Francisco Asenjo Barbieri, José Inzenga y Olona y Salas, he founded the Sociedad Artístico Musical para el cultura de la zarzuela. As a conductor, he directed the orchestra of the Teatro Real in Madrid and the Teatro de la Zarzuela. He is buried in the patio de la Concepción de la Sacramental de San Isidro. His grave has a medallion with the composer's effigy made by the Italian sculptor Benedetto Civiletti, a specialist in funerary monuments for cemeteries. The siege of Zaragoza is a descriptive fantasy on military themes composed by Cristóbal Oudrid around 1848. The work was originally conceived as incidental music for the play El Sitio de Zaragoza of 1808 by Juan Lombía, a drama in three acts and written in verse. The music was to be played throughout the play and ended with a rondalla playing the Jota aragonesa. As the piece became very popular with the public, Oudrid made an anthology with it and the rest of the work to create the instrumental work in the form of a descriptive fantasy, independent of the play. During the second half of the 20th century, the work gained popularity due to the national exaltation of heroes of the sieges such as Agustina de Aragón. It was common for military bands and police groups to perform it in recitals and today it continues to be performed by municipal and military bands as well as by orchestras and groups in various versions that offer different readings of the work.

Franz von Suppé was obliged to compete with them by taking the time-honored traditions of Vienna and combining it with the new style of Offenbach. Die schöne Galathée was Franz von Suppé's first critical success. The sculptor Pygmalion has fallen madly in love with his statue of Galathée and accordingly does not want to sell it to Mydas, a patron of the arts. Instead he prays to Venus, the goddess of the love, that the statue be brought to life. The wish is granted but Galathée turns out to be a very independent-minded creature. She is unfaithful to Pygmalion with his servant Ganymed (because he is much more pleasing to her than Pygmalion) and does not reject Mydas, who offers her jewelry. When Pygmalion catches Galathée in a compromising situation, he successfully implores Venus to turn her back into stone. The jewelry offered by Mydas is also turned into stone, but the whole statue is sold to him.

Inspired by the true story of the ancient greek statue - 'DANCING SATYR' (in Mazara del Vallo) - discovered by fishermen off the coast of Sicily in 1998 after having lain on the Mediterranean ocean floor for over 2,000 years. Following five years of careful refurbishment in Rome's 'Istituto Centrale per il Restauro' this amazing bronze statue, probably from the school of Praxiteles, was restored almost to its former glory with its head and torso remaining largely intact, incredibly! The 'Dancing Satyr' was then taken on a global tour, including Japan and the Louvre in Paris, where it drew very large crowds capturing the world's imagination. It is now housed in a purpose-built museum in Sicily - 'Museo del Satiro'. The first movement - INTRODUZIONE - begins in a neo-Italian Baroque style , with ancient undertones, in homage to the statue's current home where it has received great care and attention. The music then proceeds in a more modern and programmatic vein conjuring the disastrous sinking of the ship carrying this masterpiece in ancient times and its loss to the inky depths below. The second movement - DANZA - is much lighter in mood celebrating its recovery and conveying the joyous expression of the 'Dancing Satyr' with its arched back and head thrown back in ecstatic abandonment, brilliantly portrayed by its original sculptor. Here the musical language is more influenced by the rhythms of Greek folk music while incorporating modern guitar idioms and harmonic concepts as in the first movement.

Hesketh’s first ideas for the work came from a photograph of the Great Tympanum carving of the Last Judgement at St. Foy Cathedral in Conques, France showing an image of the hanged Judas surrounded by mocking demons. Two violent outer movements frame a bleak central section with each movement of the piece unfolds a different perspective of a swinging motif, be it a chord, a gesture or a rhythm. This is a demanding work which will challenge the very best players.

With his brother, Joseph, he was a member of the Schubertianern (friends of Franz Schubert), a group that often got together for summers at the Schloss Atzenbrugg, west of Vienna. In 1826, Leopold married Maria Johanna Evangelista Augustina Stephania Theodora Lutz, an occasion which was marked by Schubert's composition, the Kupelwieser Waltz (never written down, but passed along by the family and later transcribed by Richard Strauss).

USDAN is a summer camp for the arts located on Long Island, NY. The following is a brief description of the camp: Usdan opens up a world for children to joyfully express their creativity and develop their artistic skills.Each summer, we bring professional teachers and artists—actors, directors, playwrights, painters, sculptors, musicians, composers, dancers, poets, and novelists—to teach and collaborate with our campers ages 5 to 18 from Long Island and New York City. Set on 140 acres of natural beauty, Usdan is a welcoming and inclusive place within which campers have the freedom to build new friendships, explore nature, develop personal independence, and have fun, alongside their art-making.“In Springtime is scored for SA and piano. I was given the liberty of choosing the subject matter and writing the words as well as the music. While the piece is not exactly “a walk in the park vocally and harmonically for young people, their performance was magnificent.Several sections of the accompaniment are syncopated, and this can cause a bit of difficulty for the singers, but the rhythm is quite effective, as are the soprano “divisi sections where the harmony becomes three-part. Who doesn’t love springtime? Perform it joyfully!
