Inspiration Each year Fall and Winter bring an end to the growing season ushering in a dormant period within the seasonal cycle. Spring and Summer follow with new life and a time when we can again enjoy nature at its fullest. Our own lives mirror similar cycles; sometimes we are faced with events bringing us sadness and despair and other times peace and joy. In the end Jesus and God's great love are our Spring and Summer. This piece attempts to portray this contrast, comparing the seasons to our own lives and reminding us that in the end We Have A Friend who helps us. The Music The piece begins with soloists portraying the seasons of the year and how they relate to our lives. A transition then occurs where we're reminded that when we are down and out, and we need a helping hand, we have a friend in the Lord Jesus.

Here we have an abridged version of ‘Spring’ from Vivaldi’s famous ‘The Four Seasons’ suite, arranged here for oboe and bassoon. A little challenging perhaps but instantly recognizable and enjoyable to play. Suitable for intermediate players and above - no fiendishly difficult bits - the main points to watch out for are the tempo changes at bar 28 (where the oboe slows the tempo before a slight accelerando) and bar 34 (a new tempo, slightly down on the opening one, is established). These tempo markings are not obligatory and the piece can ebb and flow rubato fashion at these points, if you wish. Also, note the rallentando at the end. Enjoy yourselves!

Constructed in four movements and representing four stages of life, birth, adolescence, maturity and old age, the music also pays homage to Shakespeare's Seasons Of Man His acts being seven ages, incorporated throughout the work.Spring introduces the ideas of birth and infancy. After the principal theme has been stated, there is a violin cadenza encountering all twelve major keys and a 13/8 time signature representing the ancient golden ratio. These elements recall birth with all the possibilities a new life offers. Ending the movement, the principal theme is repeated with more complexity... as if posing life's questions.Summer represents the excitement and bravado of youthful adolescence and young adulthood. For the style of this movement I use a happy-go-lucky Blues voice which melds into Swing. I identify swing rhythm in all of 20th century American music culture as a common thread that runs through Ragtime through Rock and Roll on to Rap. Swing means testing the waters and pushing the envelope for lovers and soldiers.Fall is the slow movement symbolizing the wisdom of maturity. It is a peaceful theme with nostalgic strokes. It is a time for sincere reflection and enjoying ones accomplishments in life.Winter embodies the complexities and knowledge of an older person and that of a dying person. The movement begins with the principal them from Spring, but with a dissonance that emanates from a lifetime full of emotions and responsibilities. In the middle of the movement is a transition to an old world. I use my personal ancestry from Ireland as a foundation from which to rediscover one's lineage and explore the meaning and value of a cultural legacy.The exploration evolves into a four- and five-part fugue with a reel, jig, air, countered bass and the motif from the principal theme. All these elements, dances and melodies appear simultaneously and converge to form a unique insight to life's consequences from a historical perspective. Following the fugue, the principal theme finds its way back in. It sounds much as it did at birth. In the end, the solo violin cadenza carries the last earthly breaths before the violin and orchestra once again join in harmony to focus on a new life being transformed somewhere else. A little challenging perhaps but instantly recognisable and enjoyable to play. Suitable for intermediate players and above - no fiendishly difficult bits - the main points to watch out for are the tempo changes at bar 28 (where the alto slows the tempo before a slight accelerando) and bars 32 (rall.) and 34 (a new tempo, slightly down on the opening one, is established). These tempo markings are not obligatory and the piece can ebb and flow rubato fashion at these points, if you wish. Also, note the rallentando at the end. In a few places where long sixteenth-note passages occur, breath marks may be needed. These have been deliberately omitted to enable the players to work out what’s best for them. Enjoy yourselves!

Hass (A0.1031280). This is my first original composition with PDF sheet music upload. The piece is a beginner's level variation on my theme, Changing Seasons, which I composed originally in October of 2008. Eventually this piece will be published for a large ensemble but for now, I am sticking with humble beginings. This version of the song is meant to serve as an etude for piano. The song is a fun study of arpeggiation, intriguing chordal movement including secondary dominants, repeats with 1st and 2nd endings, classic piano technique, dexterity, and a small homage to Pachelbel's Canon (although not in D, in this case.) This etude is written in the key of C Major for ease of learning's sake. The original composition was written in the key of D Major. I used PreSonus' Notion 6 for this project. However, I ran into a plethora of difficulties when I transferred the file over to PDF format. Some text was lost as well as the majority of all my performance and technique notes in the score. I will try to correct this ASAP and get the score reloaded. I really just need to get something posted on here because I AM a composer and I have never actually shared a composition in musical score form for others to purchase, play or peruse. This is my first ever. I hope whoever selects this piece enjoys it and might offer some constructive criticism or insight. Have fun! (Note, the piece is intended to be played at approximately 120 bpm but I encourage playing it slowly several times at first to figure out a way through the printing errors for now).

English.The Seasons was commissioned by the South Bend Chamber Singers, Nancy Menk, conductor, and first performed on March 3, 2013 by the South Bend Chamber Singers with the Euclid Quartet in a concert devoted to music about the weather. The texts for this work were selected by the composer, and they represent three different time periods, the 17th, 19th and early 20th centuries, to show that writers have long been fascinated by the seasons and by the distinct weather conditions that each season brings. Although certain types of weather, such as wind or rain, may occur in any of the seasons, the descriptions of weather in these four poems present specific weather conditions which commonly occur in each of the four seasons: a still, hot, sultry day interrupted by the movement of a light breeze from the hills (summer); the cooling morning mists and light frost which signal the coming of winter (autumn); the bitter iciness of fierce winds and frozen air-in this poem, further compared with man's ingratitude (winter); the warm rains and southerly winds that melt the ice and bring about new life (spring). Throughout this piece various musical devices are employed to underscore or even interpret the words. These devices include text painting, contrapuntal structures (double canon and fugue), and dramatically shifting harmonic colors as each season unfolds. The contrasting performing forces of mixed choir and string quartet are particularly well-suited for presenting, very colorfully, the various musical depictions of the weather conditions and characteristics of each of the seasons. -Frank FerkoDuration: 2:40.
