Arranged by Rob Bushnell. 20th Century,Blues,Classical,Jazz. Brass Band. 137 pages. RBMusic #756642. Published by RBMusic (A0.1156327). First performed by the composer at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York in 1926, the Piano Preludes (or Three Preludes) are a collection of short pieces by George Gershwin, show casing early-20th-century American classical music, as influenced by jazz. Gershwin originally planned to compose 24 preludes, wrote 7, performed only 6 publically and was further reduced to 3 when first published. The work was dedicated to friend and musical advisor Bill Daly. The first prelude begins with a five-note blues motif. It features syncopated rhythms based on the Brazilian baião and minor-seventh chords throughout. The second prelude, which Gershwin said was a sort of blues lullaby consists of two sections: the first a lazy melody upon a steady beat of crotchets; the second the bass takes the melody, continuing with the steady beats. The third prelude was called Spanish by Gershwin, and features a question-and-answer type melody, starting in a minor tonality and ending in major one. This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. A recording of the original composition can be found here on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soEUH4H7gog.

(Moderate, singing, with humor) (for Michael Finnissy)VII. (Slow, very lyrical)VIII. (March)IX. (Envoi: Very slow, from afar)Nine Preludes (2007) for piano was written for and is dedicated to pianist Marilyn Nonken; it was commissioned byRichard Mason.Although the work is composed as a set of discrete movements, the preludes are very much interconnected, as motivicand developmental ideas run throughout the entire set. The basic musical material (founded upon collections of minorand major thirds) is shared among all nine movements. An elegiac quality runs throughout the work. The first prelude (Flowing) is inspired by the piano music of Johannes Brahms, whose contributions to the instrument’sliterature have been a significant and ongoing influence on my work. The second prelude is fast and bright. Consistent staccato textures are maintained as the two hands intertwine. The third prelude (Funereal) is dedicated to the memory of American composer Donald Martino (1931–2005). The musicrefers very obliquely to Martino’s setting of Robert Herrick’s poems of death and eternity in The White Island (1985).The fourth prelude (Dancing) is light and buoyant. After a melodic middle section, the opening music reverses itself to theend. The fifth prelude (Distant, echoing) is dedicated to Richard and Dee Wilson. Through large blocks of sustained sound (bothquiet and loud), the movement explores certain harmonic colors of the piano. The sixth prelude (Moderate, singing, with humor) is dedicated to English composer Michael Finnissy. The opening ismarked “like an ‘off-kilter’ folk song,†and this original melody is subjected to a variety of transformations and textures. The rhythmic patterns are constantly in flux. The seventh prelude (Slow, very lyrical) is melodic and passionate, with a nocturnal character. The middle builds to anintense climax before dying away. The eighth prelude (March) is spiky and crisp. In the trio, the march theme is turned first into a tonal ballad beforegradually transforming back into the language of the march. A faster reprise of the opening music follows. The ninth prelude (Envoi: Very slow, from afar) is an elegaic “farewell.†Romantic gestures and harmonies try to assertthemselves before the music dies away.Performance Note: Although it is preferred that the entire set of nine preludes be played in concert, individual preludes (or smallerassembled groupings) may be performed when necessary for programming needs. If the entire set is played, however, the order of thepreludes should not be changed. The movements should be listed in the program in the format shown at the top of this page.Recorded by Donna Amato on Carson Cooman: Piano works ALTARUS AIR-CD-9015

String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1128370 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Baroque,Chamber,Classical,Contest,Festival,Wedding. 30 pages. Jmsgu3 #728962. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1128370). J. S. Bach's Six Little Preludes BWV 933-938 were composed during the Baroque period. The preludes are in the key of C major and are among Bach's most famous works. They are short pieces, each lasting about two minutes in duration. Each prelude is a miniature, self-contained piece with its own musical ideas and themes. The preludes demonstrate Bach's mastery of counterpoint and his ability to create complex, interesting musical textures. The first prelude is simple and joyful, while the second prelude features a fugue. The third prelude is a chromatic, slightly more serious piece. The fourth prelude is a bright, joyful piece with a lot of counterpoint. The fifth prelude is quiet and contemplative, and the sixth is more lively and upbeat. These preludes provide an excellent example of Bach's mastery of the Baroque style.

Arranged by Glenn Martin. 20th Century,Blues,Contemporary,Contest,Festival,Jazz. 7 pages. Cornelius edition #773484. Published by Cornelius edition (A0.1173353). Prelude II from George Gershwin's Three Preludes for piano composed in 1926 and transcribed for Bb Clarinet and two Bassoons. Gershwin referred to the piece as a sort of blues lullaby. The second Prelude is distinctly influenced by jazz and the piece begins with a subdued melody winding its way above a smooth, steady bassline. The harmonies and melodies of this piece are built on thirds, emphasizing both the interval of the seventh and the major/minor duality of the blues scale. In the second section, the key, tempo, and thematic material change and the opening melody and bass return in the final section. This arrangement is transposed down from the original key to B minor.A perfect ensemble piece for classroom study, woodwind recitals, competitions or church interludes. Duration: 03:00Â

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1269692 Composed by Michael Maw. 20th Century,Classical. Score. 14 pages. Michael Maw #862201. Published by Michael Maw (A0.1269692). Composed at the age of 18, this set of four preludes for piano is dedicated to the Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich. Opening with a march-like motif, the music shifts drastically between piercing screams of sound and quiet melancholy – reflecting Shostakovich’s tumultuous life under the dictatorship of Joseph Stalin. The second prelude opens with youthful energy which then descends into a mysterious ostinato. This builds into a thundering finish where the music shatters into a myriad of echoing fragments. Prelude No. 3 opens with calmness and serenity. The simple repeating motif grows into an agonizing climax, immediately followed by Shostakovich’s signature phrase: DSCH (D Eb C B). This causes a return back to the same peaceful opening – as if reflecting back on the past. The final prelude is a mix of incredible energy and jest, rounding out the set with a boisterous ending. Skill level: Advanced Intermediate. 14 pages.

Piano Solo - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.987698 Composed by E.F.J. Fagan. Contemporary,Romantic Period. Score. 2 pages. Erin Fagan #21201. Published by Erin Fagan (A0.987698). This is the second Prelude from my first set of 24 Preludes for Solo Piano. Attention to dynamic contrast is important in this simple march-like piece as a gradual shift from the quietest to loudest dynamic should be heard each time the theme is heard. No expense should be spared in the final iteration of the theme in terms of dynamics and while there is a metronome marking at the start it is a guideline, the piece should be neither fast nor slow but with a simple adherence to the idea of the 'martellato' direction. This piece is rather simple except for the accel. section at the end which requires some finesse, however for a beginner pianist it should not be too much of a challenge. Performance time should be roughly 2 minutes.

With concerts, recitals and wedding performances in mind, this arrangement will be popular with players and audiences alike. The Prelude has an irrevocable sense of momentum, only sated with a short cadenza like flourish and a final bout of arpeggios. The Fugue allows all four voices to develop and flourish after the forced regimentation of the Prelude. The difficulty level for the Prelude is about ABRSM grade 5-6, and the Fugue about grade 5-8 with the outside parts taking the more technical moments, although optional alternatives are scored where range appropriate to lower difficulty if desired. The PDF is 33 pages in length (portrait A4) and includes a full score and parts for flexible brass quartet (2 Cornets/Trumpets, Tenor Horn/F Horn/Baritone/Trombone and Euphonium/BassTrombone). Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quartet Bassoon,Clarinet,Flute,Oboe - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.805868 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by G L Harvey. Baroque,Concert,Graduation,Standards,Wedding. 20 pages. G L Harvey #5200665. Published by G L Harvey (A0.805868). This piano classic in C minor, second in the series of J S Bach's 48 Preludes & Fugues, has been arranged for Woodwind Quartet (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet and Bassoon). The difficulty level for the Prelude is about ABRSM grade 5-6 and the Fugue is a little higher. The PDF is 20 pages in length (portrait A4) and includes a full score and parts. The combined duration of the Prelude & Fugue is about 3 minutes 20 seconds.

Piano Solo - Digital Download SKU: A0.990153 Composed by Don Bowyer (Sunway University). Contemporary. Score. 22 pages. Dolphin Don's Music School #6434599. Published by Dolphin Don's Music School (A0.990153). Five Preludes is a set of short pieces for solo piano, exploring various sounds and ideas. Each prelude is one to two minutes in length.Prelude 1: Play-ludeThe main idea of this prelude uses parallel fourths in the left hand with short, dissonant statements in the right hand. The contrasting second idea has a tonal bass line progression below a chromatic figure. The 3/8 time signature gives the piece a quasi-swing feel.Prelude 2: Pray-ludeThis prelude alternates between F major and Gb major, with slow reflective melodic statements over sustained roots. The statements gradually become shorter and shorter until the recapitulation.Prelude 3: Pre-lewdThis whimsical prelude uses a five-note synthetic scale throughout (1, m3, P4, m6, M7), but the scale modulates in a pattern that suggests a standard 16-measure blues progression. There is a repeating figure in the bass using the same modulating scale.Prelude 4: Prelude SolitudeThis slow prelude in 7/4 time has an ostinato bass line that never varies. The six notes of the bass line (Eb, E, F, Ab, A, Bb) form a synthetic scale from which the entire piece is derived.Prelude 5: Pre-ludicrousThis prelude uses the same six-note synthetic scale throughout (C, Eb, E, G, Ab, B). Harmonic motion is established through a repeated bass line, with chords built from every other note of the scale.

Published by Brian Golden (A0.1216197). Prelude 12 in Bb Minor Dorian from 24 Preludes for the Piano in Major and Minor Modes by composer Brian Golden  The creative concept in writing these preludes is to provide a link to past preludes written for the keyboard, and in particular to the works of J.S. Bach and Frederic Chopin, whose works stand as essential repertoire for any student of the piano.  Using Bach’s and Chopin’s examples, my goal was to compose in all twenty-four keys, yet offer my own variation on the progression of key signatures – Bach’s being a pattern of major to parallel minor progressing chromatically through all keys, and Chopin’s a pattern of major to relative minor keys progressing clockwise through the circle of fifths.  In order to expand my harmonic and melodic possibilities, I have included the modal keys rather than only the major and harmonic minor keys, and have chosen to work counterclockwise through the circle of fifths, which is a more natural harmonic progression.  Therefore, all major preludes resolve from one to another V-I, as well as do all the minor preludes.  While there are seven modal scales, I decided to leave out the locrian modes for the following reasons.  First, due to the diminished fifth, the locrian mode cannot be thought of as either major nor minor.  Second, the locrian mode did not have a relative key to pair with, since there were no other keys with the identical characteristic notes.  In creating the key architecture, I determined that there was only one solution to pairing major and relative minor scales based on a shared parent key and characteristic note - ionian/aolian, mixolydian/phrygian and lydian/dorian.  This specific order of modal scales is the only order that would enable composing in all twelve key signatures.  Finally, the inspiration for each prelude came from playing through several other preludes in the same keys - mostly by Bach and Chopin - and letting their themes and styles influence me in the writing of my own.YouTube Link https://youtu.be/xb4E0I-vJek.
