Duration: 22 – 24 minutes, Six Parts between 12 – 16 pp. Description: Each of the SerapeÌs has a programmatic subtitle that gives the listener a hint as to how to listen. SerapeÌs Nos. 1, 4 and 7 (subtitled Three Brothers) divide up the collection symmetrically as all three share variations of the same set of motivic layers. Nonetheless, despite their common genetic heritage, the three brothers all have radically different personalities. SerapeÌ No. 2 is called Burro for its loping cowboy-swing. Its seemingly infinite upward-spiraling progression through succeeding tonal centers reminds one of the mules on the switchbacks of the Grand Canyon. SerapeÌ No. 3, Starry Night, employs one of Korneitchouk's favorite devices of combing complex order out of chaos. Overlapping melodic patterns in 7/8, 8/8, 9/8, 10/8, 11/8, and 13/8 emerge -- three at a time -- out of constellations of apparently random notes. The brutal SerapeÌ No. 5, L.A. Smog, is rude. This SerapeÌ starts as a sonorous block of jackhammer intensity that later reveals itself to be in a very brisk 5/8 meter. In contrast, SerapeÌ No. 6 is the most peaceful and static SerapeÌ. It includes a musical portrait of the composer's refrigerator turning itself on and off in the dead of night. A drone, which suggests the 60-cycle hum of the refrigerator, anchors the subtle shifting and overlapping harmonies of the piece.

Overlapping melodic patterns in 7/8, 8/8, 9/8, 10/8, 11/8, and 13/8 emerge -- three at a time -- out of constellations of apparently random notes. The brutal SerapeÌ No. 5, L.A. Smog, is rude. This SerapeÌ starts as a sonorous block of jackhammer intensity that later reveals itself to be in a very brisk 5/8 meter. In contrast, SerapeÌ No. 6 is the most peaceful and static SerapeÌ. It includes a musical portrait of the composer's refrigerator turning itself on and off in the dead of night. A drone, which suggests the 60-cycle hum of the refrigerator, anchors the subtle shifting and overlapping harmonies of the piece.

Description: Triptych for String Orchestra sets up three contrasting musical tableaux in as many different genres. Though this approach is often called post-modern, the composer prefers to see it as an indulgence of the many types of music he enjoys. The work opens with a free form improvisatory movement whose sour romanticism comes from its rich chromatic palette. The second movement is in many ways the opposite of the first. It is a very tightly constrained serial work where the parameters of rhythm, inflection, and dynamics, not just pitch, get a full serial workout of permutations. The third and finale movement, then can be seen as a happy medium between the two extremes of the previous movements. It's in the form of an episodic Dionysian romp that alternates between expositions of an ever more shrill theme with puckish episodes of varied quasi-ad lib solos embedded in coloristic texture. Vorbeiziehende Bäume [Trees passing by] is a piece for 2 saxophones where the Southamerican origin of the composer clearly arises to the surface: an original metamorphosis of the tango argentino flirting with jazz. Vorbeiziehende Bäume is part of a set of eleven pieces for saxophone duo (all others will be uploaded soon) called Eisenbahn (Railroad). All eleven pieces have titles related to the railway. If you are wondering why a German title, the reason is quite simple: that's where the composer lives. In this edition, Vorbeiziehende Bäume is offered in four instrumental combinations: - 2 saxophones (2 Tenor or 2 Alto) - Alto Sax + Tenor Sax - 2 Baritone Sax - Bb Clarinet + Tenor Sax No parts are needed: scores are already transposed (practice showed that it is much efficient to read this piece from the score, seeing also the partner's part). The piece, that is dedicated to Albanian clarinetist Ibrahim Gunbardhi, has been performed by him together with Mr. Thomas Sauer. Rated at a Level 2 when played with 11-12 ringers because of its slow tempo and easy rhythms, “A Stroll on ‘Duke Street’†can be interpreted very musically, with crescendos and spiritually high moments. Its three verses are each treated differently, with the last verse raises the key signature a half step and then yet another half step as it grows with intensity. Although based on a hymn tune, the title allows this arrangement to be used for any audience.For sacred environments, the arranger suggests that the text be studied for inspiration. For the straight way was lost was commissioned and premiered by The Darkwood Consort in Boise, Idaho. But it has since been performed throughout the US and Europe many times in many duet combinations: Bb Clarinet and Viola, Bb Clarinet and Cello; Alto Sax and Viola, Alto Sax and Cello, and Viola and Bass Clarinet (the original!). The live video concert performance seen here is for Bb Clarinet and Cello, performed by Natalie Grata and Chris Erickson in Orlando, Florida. The title became unintentionally more and more appropriate over time, as the work has undergone multiple revisions and tweaking, and experiments. The title comes from a passage in Dante’s The Divine Comedy, and I chose it because, first, it includes the name of the ensemble that commissioned it from me, but second, it also seems a good description of how the compositional process sometimes goes and did go with this piece; sometimes while working, the piece takes unexpected turns (almost of its own volition) that must then be dealt with: Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vitami retrovai per una selva oscura,che la diritta via era smarrita. Published by Stephen Davies (A0.891956).   CLARINET CONCERT CONCERTINO FOR WIND BAND I don’t normally enter long descriptions of my arrangements, nothing worse than seeing that little sign on the bottom right saying ‘see more’, however this piece has a rather interesting story that I’d like to share with you! It was maybe 8 or 9 years ago that I helped in the library of the Band Of The Guards Association, a group of musicians who were all members of the Household Division Bandsin London, that is to say the Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish, Welsh, Life Guards and Blues & Royals bands, chiefly known the world over for Changing The Guard at Buckingham Palace and many other ceremonial occasions. The Band Of The Guards Association were privileged to rehearse at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the famous Chelsea Pensioners, renowned for their Redcoats and medals as veterans of the British Army. Our library of music for the band at the time was held in an air raid shelter deep in the cellars underneath the labyrinthine corridors of the old building built by Sir Christopher Wren back in the 1680’s. When I say ‘air raid shelter’, that is exactly what it was like! Can’t go into too much detail, but suffice it to say that it was like being transported back in time! But this is where the library was kept, complete with dusty shelves, blackout warnings, obsolete bulb replacements and tunnels to the Thames! The man in charge of the library was Mr.Gordon ‘Joe’ Stafford, former Solo Clarinet with HM Band Of The Welsh Guards (ret’d), a fine player of that instrument in his day, and revered as such even now. About 8 years ago, our ‘underground ‘ library was deemed a fire hazard, and we were ‘invited’ to move it elsewhere. As we had our practice room nearby in the Chelsea Hospital, we decided to relocate the whole library there, shelving being built and constructed by enthusiastic band members. Joe Stafford and myself were not particularly enthusiastic about this, but it had to be done. Having looked at the enormous amount of music to be moved, we thought about ditching some of the scores which would never be played again, for instance selections of musicals long forgotten, scores with multiple missing parts etc. Lots of that music went to local music organisations simply for sight reading purposes, and the more complete versions went to bands and orchestras to bolster their stock of scores. After the laborious sorting out in the air raid shelter, Joe and I had the unenviable task of discarding the scores and parts that were incomplete, defaced, or just basically useless. It was an arbitrary case of ‘keep or throw’, and at the time we were doing this, Joe was desperate for a pint in the bar! I agreed, and was anyway on my last batch of throwaways when I found a piece titled ‘Clarinet Concerto’, by A.E.Williams. Written in pencil, with ancient sellotape, and signed by all the people who played it many years ago, including the Soloist and composer, I thought that that should not be binned, so I kept it! Joe Stafford suggested that I should ‘get it out there’ , so I have. Incidentally it has a cracking Cadenza towards the end, it was a bit smudged in the original score, but I’ve filled in the gaps!! This would be an ideal addition to the band repertoire for Clarinet!
