Originally conceived as a harmonic exercise for piano, this piece was adapted for string quartet, in order to exploit their sustaining qualities and rich timbre. The piece explores inversions and 're-voicings' of the opening 8-chord sequence. Tones are sustained for as long as the players wish, who also determine their own dynamics, before moving on to the next chord. The effect is hypnotic, as a sense of (musical) time seems to be suspended. Sequence IV is accessible for the listener and is appropriate for most standards of string player.

The choral-orchestral setting of the shortened Catholic Mass for the Dead in Latin is the best-known of his large works. Its focus is on eternal rest and consolation. Fauré's reasons for composing the work are unclear, but do not appear to have had anything to do with the death of his parents in the mid-1880s. He composed the work in the late 1880s and revised it in the 1890s, finishing it in 1900.This is a performance version of no IV Pie Jesu (Pie Jesus) for double wind quintet/bass.The soprano solo is given to the oboe.In seven movements, the work is scored for soprano and baritone soloists, mixed choir, orchestra and organ. Different from typical Requiem settings, the full sequence Dies irae is omitted, replaced by its section Pie Jesu. The final movement In Paradisum is based on a text that is not part of the liturgy of the funeral mass but of the burial.

Published by Nikolai Clavier (A0.942498). I was asked to write this piece for a Norwegian saxophonist studying in Copenhagen. He was looking for new music from each of the Scandinavian countries, and I decided to make my contribution a homage to the beautiful nature that Norway has to offer. Thus I drew inspiration from traditional folk music, as well as the majestic images of mountains, fjords and valleys across the Norwegian landscape. This piece has five movements and each has an illustrating title, creating a narrative sequence of movements. A vignette is a brief evocative description, account or episode. This produced a challenge in the sense that I had to be musically brief and technically concrete withing the span of a short movement. This in addition to the challenge of creating appropriate soundscapes and colors. The five movements are:I. Views over the FjordII. Winter sceneryIII. Nora at the farmIV. The Midnight Sun over the Finnmark HighlandsV. Autumn rain at the southern coastAn other interesting fact to note is the fact that the last four movements has rather specific seasons attached to themselves. Second movement is a winter movement with the original title Snow covered mountains and icy waters, and then follows a spring movement, a clear summer movement and autumn at last.

Int.: Eya Grimonia.Even the simplest things need a solid internal structure that supports their discourse and transcends it. This work was a birthday present to an 11-year-old girl who was born on the 11th of the month 11, and is built on her onomastic numbers [4, 5, 5] which generate the harmonic and melodic basis together with those of the composer [9, 7], those of her mother [6, 5, 7] and those of her brother [5, 5, 5]. Thus, the first movement, “Dawnâ€, is structured in 11 sections (it is a gift from the age of 11) of 4+5+5 bars. “Reading†has 9 sections of 4 bars and the melodic-harmonic sequence is formed by the complex [4, 5, 6, 7, 9], so we all find ourselves involved in the reading plot. The third movement, “Slowlyâ€, in 5/4, a reference to the names of the girl and her brother, has 3 sections of 5+5+5 bars; the brother’s turning round endlessly while the girl thinks about the turns that the world takes. The final “Apotheosisâ€, in the rhythm of 9+7 eighths, has two parts: in the first one there are 3 sections of 6+5+7 (the mother) opening the way to the 3 sections of the second part which represent the effervescence in the dawn of life (4+5+5).The most beautiful expression of mathematics, the language of the most intimate emotions, the essence of our own existence is in the music.--oOo--Até mesmo as coisas mais simples precisam duma sólida estrutura interna que sustente o seu discurso e o transcenda.Esta obra foi prenda de anos a uma menina de 11 anos que nasceu no dia 11 do mês 11, e está construÃda sobre os seus números onomásticos [4, 5, 5] que geram a base harmónica e melódica em conjunto com os do compositor [9, 7], os da sua mãe [6, 5, 7] e os do seu irmão [5, 5, 5]. I have written these 24 compositions with the aim of providing complete works (rather than excerpts) for harmonic analysis that utilize chords that follow a sequence commonly found in theory textbooks. Book I begins with Minuet in F Major, introducing the I and V triads in root position and contains nothing else but these chords. The next composition, Waltz in E major, continues with root-position I and V triads and introduces the root-position IV triad. In this successive fashion, each new composition introduces a new chord, carefully avoiding any chords reserved for future study while cumulatively building upon an ever-increasing chordal vocabulary. All twelve compositions in Book I are devoted to diatonic triads and begin exploring non-chord tones but do not have any seventh chords or secondary functional chords.

I continue to take classes three or four times a week. It's fun, athletic, and challenging. And I'm still working on the basic notion of spotting in my pirouettes ... So when Max Hobart of the Civic Symphony Orchestra of Boston agreed to premiere a new work of mine I knew it had to be a symphonic ballet. Coincidentally, I discovered that my favorite cartoonist, Edward Gorey, is also a balletomane. He lived in New York City between 1953 and 1986 and never missed a single performance of the New York City Ballet. Apparently his leaving New York to live permanently on Cape Cod was prompted by the death of George Balanchine in 1983. Among Edward Gorey's many books there is one, The Gilded Bat, about a young woman, Maud Splaytoe, and her adventures in the ballet world. She dies in the end when the plane she is in flies into a great, dark bird. Hmmm, I thought, The Gilded Bat would make a nice adagio movement. To complete the work, I found four other Gorey books that attracted me in mood and texture: The Nursery Frieze - dogs running across the edge of a nursery ceiling, barking out words whose sequence provides no sense or meaning, e.g., Archipelago, cardamon, obloquy, ignavia, samisen, bandages, wax, Gavelkind, ... ; The Raging Tide - a fantastical story about four creatures, Figbash, Hooglyboo, Naeelah and Skrump, who would not stop abusing each other; The Utter Zoo - an alphabet book of zoo animals of Edward Gorey's concoction, e.g., Ampoo, Boggerslosh, Crunk, Dawbis, Epitwee, ... ; and The Blue Aspic - a macabre story of a mad fan, Jasper Ankle, who stalks an opera diva, Ortenzia Caviglia. When he finally meets her at the stage-door after a performance, he stabs her in the throat and cries, J'ai trouvé Hortense! Symphony No. 2 ... A Phantasmagorey Ballet is in five movements: I. Corelli's Op. 5 consists of 12 sonatas for violin and basso continuo. Sonata, Op.5, No.10 has five movements: I. Preludio, II. Allemanda, III. Sarabanda, IV. Gavotta, V. Giga. The fourth movement (IV) is especially well-known.Basso continuo is usually played by harpsichord and cello. However, Lumiere Duo has released a beautiful CD recording of Op. 5, No. 7, performed as a duet for violin and cello. The sheet music we're sharing here is arranged for duets of Op. 5, No. 10, for violin and viola.Viola is tuned one octave above the cello. As a result, the viola can't faithfully replicate the cello part from the original. There are notes that are too low for the viola's range. In the arrangement for violin and viola, we strive to stay true to the original notes. If the notes aren't in the viola's range, we raise them by one octave. However, following this rule too strictly can lead to unnatural sequences. In such cases, even when the note is within the viola's range, we use a note one octave higher to maintain naturalness. While there's no rigid rule for this treatment, we're trying to imagine what Corelli might do if he were arranging for violin and viola. Additionally, in the third and fourth movements, we've swapped the solo part and basso continuo part in the repeating sections. Shifting the melody to the viola brings a fresh sound. In the audio samples below, we've used a flute sound for the violin part and a clarinet sound for the viola part. This should help you better understand how the swapping works.
